  • Join us today as we discuss carry on vs. checked bags in this ultimate guide to packing for full time travel. We have been traveling full time for over 5 years and we have learned so much along the way. We choose not to use the carry on only system for a variety of reasons. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Nice to see someone speak in favor of checked bags. Seems like everyone thinks carry-on only is what all long-term travelers should strive for. I've always traveled with a checked bag and a backpack. I don't overpack but I like to have some variety in my wardrobe, shoes, etc, so I don't get bored with what I'm wearing. You just can't do that with carry-on only. And as you mention, if you do carry-on only, you may be required to check the bag anyway since it's always going to be over 7 kg. I'd rather not have the stress of worrying about that or having to lug the carry-on all around the airport and on the airplane. Thanks for sharing your packing techniques! Safe travels!

Nice video ! When I travel I always have a checklist that I use . Before I travel I carefully think everything through and set up check list. That way I do not forget that one item that is worth $5.00 that ends up costing me $20.00 later . I take a lot of day trips to NYC with a small daypack and do the same. One other item I bring is what I call an essentials kit. Items I pack are eye drops , dental floss , tweezers, aspirin , zertex, several bandaids , first aid team, nail clippers , anti acid tabs, ect. All the items are a small sizes and the whole kit is very small. The slightest problem can be so annoying , especially if you need to go buy something to solve the issue . Every so often I use the kit , not a lot but great when you need something. Also, extra glasses are an essential with my poor vision .

It's not only about carry on vs checked, I use a backpack and anything over 25-30 lbs can be difficult on your back. Wheeled luggage is fine if you are doing city travel and taking taxis but it's totally unsuitable for walking long distances on roads or if you're going off the beaten path. I've dragged wheeled luggage in Asia and Europe and it's not fun. Stopped doing that 2 decades ago when I switched to a backpack and never looked back!

I just discovered packing cubes and liked them. My only complaint is that they seem to be sold in sets, not individual sizes. I am short and too old/diginified/considerate of others to stand on a seat to put a carryon in overhead bin (plane or train) so when traveling alone I only carry minimum underseat essentials and check the rest. Amtrack has more room for at seat stuff such as food. I put a small purse with wallet, credit cards, tissues, copy of ticket, phone. in my carryon and usde as as additional pillow/armrest. Also I have found that restrooms in some airports do not have much space for bags in the stalls and hooks very high so a person has to lift bags and backpacks which can be easy to carry but heavy to lift.

Thank you for another wonderful video. When I started traveling I was able to do carry-on only, but now I'm at a point where that doesn't even seem possible - between the laptop and the medications and the cpap bag and on the list seems to go. So I've given up that fight. But I've been a little concerned about how I'm going to pack for a trip next spring that starts with a 2 week cruise in the Netherlands/Belgium area followed by 2 weeks in Turkey. I don't think there's anyway to do that as light as I used to, but I also worry about the Turkey portion of it if I take as much as I usually do these days! I will have to start packing for that much earlier than I did for my most recent trip - I was packing so last minute that I know I brought too much with me.

On your website it says you use an Amazon Basics 21” hard side spinner bag, but that’s not the bag you are packing which looks like a soft, larger Kenneth Cole bag. What size are the bags you two usually use now? Thanks! Been learning so much from you about full time travel!

They break about every 6 - 12 months so we need to replace them on the go. Currently we actually have $25 suitcases we bought at MBK mall in Bangkok. Hopefully they last until we get home and can get more on Amazon.

I enjoy watching your videos. We are taking a 2 week vacation in March that includes a 9 night RC cruise. I would like to get a GoPro. What would you recommend?

Wow that backpack must be a back breaker! How much does it weigh? How many articles of clothing of each type do you bring?

    Alli,
Do y'all cross pack: meaning are some of your clothes in each other's luggage OR do y'all pack separate from each other? 🤔🤔

He has agencies that sell them commercially, but we are considering putting them up on our website for the general public to buy also.
