Be sure to hide caches well when you're done, and take the time to put container lids back on correctly to keep it all safe and dry. It takes no time at all and it really helps the cache owner.
This video is so much more important than you think, I wish every geo-newbie gets to watch this. Actually, I wish every geocacher, regardless of experience, would watch this!
Yeah. I learned all of this from my ex (then-boyfriend) who introduced me to this hobby. But my current boyfriend has found like 5 caches in his entire lifetime (almost 30) when he has hung out with other geocachers (like me) and only yesterday made an account to actually start the hobby himself. This could be helpful information for him. These guys explain things better than I do :D
a cool thing i started to do while geocaching is eating a Kinder Joy egg. I eat the treat as a celebration when I find a geocache and I leave the toy inside the egg at the cache if the caches big enough.
Also, I highly recommend NOT hiding geocaches in places like cemeteries... Grounds keepers do NOT appreciate people coming and digging around in cemeteries.. plus, a cemetery is a dedicated space to pay respects for those who have passed on. NOT a place to be treasure hunting. Please do not hide caches in cemeteries! Even if meant well, it's very rude and frowned upon!
I wish more people would log trackables properly. We seem to have a large number of caches in our area that show having a TB but when in reality the TB left over a year ago and the taker didn't bother to log that fact; the TB in some cases is still missing three years later and even the owner hasn't logged it as missing yet.
Yes! I have been geocaching for only a couple of months and only on 17 finds but already the amount of times I have found a cache that had a trackable only to find it's not there...
Doppelbock do we have to buy a trackable tag from Amazon or create our own? Really excited we’re about to go out for first time this morning now that summer has started!
We went geocaching for the first time today! It was SO much fun! There were a couple that we just couldnt find, but for the most part we found the ones we looked for! Only one of them had a prize in it, but we had fun leaving prizes in them for the next person (I guess its ok to do that?) and looking at the logs in each one! The oldest one we found was from 2010.
When me and my now husband first got together, one of our begining dates was Geocaching! We signed up for a group event. Ill never forget it and I still have the little red beanie bag monkey from the first one we found! (Now 8 years ago!). I had NO idea there were geocaches EVERYWHERE! I thought it was only a planned event type of thing!! I just downloaded the app and there's apparently multiple at a park I frequent almost weekly when walking my dog, I had no idea I was walking right past hidden geocaches this entire time!! I even made my own cache! It's ready to be hidden, but on the geocache app I don't know how to log it. Do I have to pay the premium just to log my own cache? I mean, it's worth it but also a little frustrating. I'm so glad I found out I can do this any day and not have to sign up for local groups that only come around once or twice a year! This is amazing!
I just found out about this app and I'm loving it. I also tried to find out how to hide my own geocache and you have to actually go to the website geocaching.com to log it. You dont have to be premium either. I hope this helps :)
And don't be an absolute salad brain and take everything in the cache. I don't care how many children you have tagging along that you can appease, the trade rules still apply.
Agree. And it's also good to teach kids the value of leaving things for others, and the fact that choices have to be made in life, starting with very little ones, like choosing an item from the box. ;-)
This has Napolean Dynamite vibes to it... Thanks so much this video is really great! Whenever I take a friend out I always show them proper etiquette, and to always watch out for puggles!!
Down loaded the app today and found 2 caches within walking distance. First was super easy to locate the 2nd was tricky sadly nothing but the logs but I made sure to leave a few things behind for whoever finds it next :)
Geocache placements do not damage, deface or destroy public or private property. Caches are placed so that the surrounding environment, whether natural or human-made, is safe from intentional or unintentional harm. Property must not be damaged or altered to provide a hiding place, clue, or means of logging a find. Examples of actual damage/defacement or the appearance o damage/defacement: things nailed or screwed to trees and poles and fences; drilled holes in trees, utility poles, fence poles, trail poles to fit a cache (bison tubes, film canisters).
I am really interested in starting geocaching but the "drawing attention part" would kill me. I act weird even in normal situation so I can never experience the joy of geocaching :(
It heavily depends on the trackable's goal, which you can find in the trackable's page. All of them have a goal. Many trackables have a specific place they want to reach. For example, if you find one in Canada and its goal is to get to Australia, you can move it so it's in a geocache that's closer to an airport. Eventually, a geocacher who is going to Australia will decide to do some geocaching while waiting for their flight, and will run across the trackable and take it with them on their flight. When it reaches Australia, its goal is completed. After that, it could just keep going around Australia, or it could not. It doesn't matter. Other trackables just want to "gain mileage", meaning their goal is to move around as much as possible. The total distance they've travelled is updated on their page every time they're moved to another geocache. Not all trackables want to move, though. Some just want to "say hi". With these, you just put a "Discover" entry on their log, saying you've seen it.
So i just downloaded the app and wondered what is trading, log book, what do you do with the thing inside the boxes when you find one and if you know smth that i need or should know please comment it!!
Yeah. Someone already answered your question, but let me clarify a little more: The website won't allow you to log something as found unless you write something, so if people have nothing else to say, they say "TFTC" = thanks for the cache. Useless information (for you): In Finnish, the same thing is written "KK" = kiitos kätköstä. Means exactly the same thing.
Just starting out and found three. The contents of the 2nd and 3rd were wet...we've had a ton of rain. Is it a breach of etiquette to go back with a small tiny zip lock to keep the contents of each dry?
They probably thought they hit the lotto or that someone lost it 😂 did you leave a note I guess? You're an awesome person, that was really kind of you. 😊

Geocachers are not being unsuspicious I know many who draw too much attention :/. respecting natural areas? while most say they do I find the most nature disturbance in geocache areas: I barely need to look hard for a geocache: just follow the trash.
I want to go out with my grandson ( Who introduced me to this game yesterday while we were on a short road trip) and do this and I'm wondering if we can put things in the cache like encouraging notes or inspirational quotes?
Not neccesarily, most of the larger ones such as ammo cans will have the green sticker with the logo on it. But once you get to small and extra small caches they usually don't. But if the cache is large enough it usually has a little pamphlet in it that explains what geocaching is. Hope that helped!
found tiny micro trinkets in a micro cache yesterday!! :) didnt have anything worth trading with me so i left a little hair tie for anyone who needs it
Sooo there's this geochache near me, I've look for like a minute because I didn't have much time. I looked at the hint a figured out it's in the B of an Arby's sign. How do I find it without being suspicious?
Eat a sandwich. Or carry a book. People don't bother someone who looks pre occupied with normal things. Say a big friendly hi, how are you. to people who stare, so they know you aren't hiding anything. And explain you are part of an adult treasure hunting community for fun. 😊
So, what can be hidden, and what not? Since 2012 I did hide sone precious items I did b myself in 4 locations in Belgrade, Serbia. 3 of them are now in the ,,private property". The 4th one was a gift for my youtube follower, and it was the book hidden under the heavy rock. She was thrilled when she got the book
NOOOOO don't take the cache that defeats the purpose! Bring something with you to trade out for something inside the cache, and then hide it back EXACTLY how you found it.
Don't forget to sign & date the log inside it! Then, using your app of choice or on the Geocaching website, post your "Found" log on the cache's own webpage.
If you don't want the item, leave it exactly as you found it. If you want to take the item, please replace it with something of equal or greater value (which is a judgement call a lot of times). When geocaching, always come prepared just in case. Or leave the item and come back with your replacement item, hoping it will still be there. But don't ever just take something and just leave it empty, or with unusable/ unwanted items. Hope this helps...😊
I agree with most of your video but saddly the geocachers tend to be enviomentally friendly part is FAR from the truth in my area at least. We constantly find trash, well beaten paths off the real path etc. Geocaching used to be a lot of fun but it seems the more mainstream it gets the worse it becomes. These Mega events are the worst. More trash, people leaving junk instead of the equal or up-trading rule, caches not being maitained and just left to rot and trash up the place. Not to say ALL caches are like this, there are the rare gems out there that the owners take care of and people play by the rules, but they are few and far between. I hope it's just a growing pain but I fear it's a long term problem.
I am having a problem with a certain cacher that is logging FINDS on my caches and has been discovered, with photo evidence of the logsheets to NOT be signing the logsheets. I have email them to inform them of the BASIC rule to sign the logsheet and requested they go back to sign the logsheet or delete their FIND note. They continue to ignore that request and just recently a geocacher discovered that their caches also had no log signed but this specific cacher logged finds with no signature. What is one to do? I feel that because this is NOT JUST MY caches, they ought to be reported and sanctioned. What do cache owners do? Thank you for the help. I have tried the first line of courtesy but it appears they cheat.
Laura, I feel your pain! Can you believe a group of Adults rush out to be the first to find, Don’t sign the log, let your granddaughter think she was first (it was in a kind of wilderness BMx course in a nature preserve, ) when we got home on computer we discovered these grownups had been there before us! When I asked why- can you believe one said we didn’t want to spoil someone’s fun!!!! PS these people have statistics showing 100 finds in a day! ’
Well, the owner is well in their right to delete the virtual log if there is no physical evidence that the user has found the cache. Even taking a photo of the cache or the logbook is not enough. A signature with their username in the logbook is all that's needed, and having a photo of your signature in the logbook is proof enough to restore the deleted log in case the owner maliciously/accidentally deletes your log. But it's up to the owner, in the end. Some just don't care at all, some can accept a photo of the cache, and some require a signature. There are also edge cases, like, for example, the logbook is just a pile of mush because the container wasn't water-proof. In those cases, to be safe, just alert the owner that it needs maintenance, and when it's fixed, go there again and mark it as found, along with a signature. Replacing the logbook yourself may not fly with some owners, even if the logbook is straight up paper paste.
I would put number 4 as number 1 through 10 and then the others. It seems to me, like more and more idiots (pardon me) are doing all they can to ruin the environment while caching. At least I wouldn't know any other reason why I find so many dead batteries next to caches.
Down with Dollar store GeoJunk!!!!!! Squished Marbles are not Swag they are Slag.... Go to a Garage Sale and go through the Kid Box or a Flea market, tons of Cool swag there, or Just make your own...or Take Nothing Leave Nothing
MASH UP batman Yes, if they aren't trackables. You can take swag (a prize) and put in a coin of your own. Can't be a TB though. I've used quarters and dimes before for trading swag.
Its very nice of showing the geocache etiquette of fair trading but when you go to belgium or the netherlands you know this is something that will never happen. even when someone makes a special: trade fair geocache there are people who will just take stuff and put something back that they accidently seem to have like a used pencil or a used hairelastic. and in the WORST case scenario they just take stuff and eventually the geocache that was so well supplied for lands up empty. its like feeding one big blackhole where everything eventually dissapears in. even when writing dozens of pages, Making it clearly visible in huge letters that you want people to trade fair you allways seem to get garbage and thats a really big shame.
I usually have been taking coins I find lately to compensate me for the gas I burn drying wet logs with my air conditioner. lol I figure that's a fair trade to the COs out there.
I just joined cause I'm looking for extra cash... and I'm going to leave the boxes empty(that's the truth) cause I'm sure they will be filled with other stuff...
Geocaches don't usually have money in them. All geocaches contain a log book for players to sign their names. Larger caches may have small items to trade called SWAG.
Well, see if you can find who placed it there by checking the virtual log, and report them. If you can't, just remove the lighter and carry on. No need to replace it with something else, since it wasn't supposed to be there in the first place.
I've just stumbled on this at 55. This seems a great way to get outside more and some exercise. I start next weekend.
How did it went?

Well, this only really applies to places with lots of people. Geocaches can be found anywhere, not just urban areas.
But what DO we do with trackables? It sounds like we just need to put them in another geocache asap
It heavily depends on the trackable's goal, which you can find in the trackable's page. All of them have a goal.
Many trackables have a specific place they want to reach. Loved it! Shared on facebook:)
I hope it's just a growing pain but I fear it's a long term problem.
how do you decide if an item is equal or greater value for trade?
when you find the turd that I left, make sure and leave a gold coin.
+Zeb Virgil that's funny zoe virgin but it doesn't help
Use common sense
It's a judgement call... One man's junk is another man's treasure
@@GGZZTT 😜🤣🤣🤣
Can you take stuff from geocaches?
yes as long as you leave something of equal or greater value in the cache
How can i leave and start a new geocache? At a new location

If you are traveling ...you can't go back and sign it when it is fixed.
I would put number 4 as number 1 through 10 and then the others. It seems to me, like more and more idiots (pardon me) are doing all they can to ruin the environment while caching. At least I wouldn't know any other reason why I find so many dead batteries next to caches.
there's not a singel one cache in my entire area , and the nearest one os 200km away
Down with Dollar store GeoJunk!!!!!!
Squished Marbles are not Swag they are Slag....
Go to a Garage Sale and go through the Kid Box or a Flea market, tons of Cool swag there, or Just make your own...or Take Nothing Leave Nothing
LaAttiDah There's nothing wrong with the dollar store. They actually have some good stuff, even for your home.
I want more videos of geocaching but in PUERTO RICO
+KEAJ27 GAMES It's the same everywhere. If there's none in Puerto Rico you need to hide some yourself.
can u trade in coins
Geocoins are trackables
MASH UP batman Yes, if they aren't trackables. You can take swag (a prize) and put in a coin of your own. Can't be a TB though. I've used quarters and dimes before for trading swag.
0:56 This Trackable can actually be discovered!
Good to know!
Good advice :)
it helped me learn alot
also I'm going geocaching this afternoon
Reupload?
Whose watching in 2024?

Can I leave something and not take something?
ye
Yes. It's equal *or greater* value. I think "something" has greater value than "nothing". Well, as long as it's not just straight up trash.
yes respecting the environment. oddly specific warning: the cute little wildlife are not geocache items, so don't pick them up.
how awful 😐
En mi zona no hay ningun geocachig 😢
Great opportunity to start it then!
Saved my live :D
LOL @ "Be as nonchalant as possible"
Muggle and puggle LOL
Bethany looks like D.J Tanner from full house! I think that is cool
ps anyone got any tips
DJ LLAMA STYLEZ yeah
That was a geocat...
One day in ðe distant future, I hope to hide a duduk in a geocache.

you cool guys
I just joined cause I'm looking for extra cash... and I'm going to leave the boxes empty(that's the truth) cause I'm sure they will be filled with other stuff...
Geocaches don't usually have money in them. All geocaches contain a log book for players to sign their names. Larger caches may have small items to trade called SWAG.
I found a lighter in a geocache
Well, see if you can find who placed it there by checking the virtual log, and report them. If you can't, just remove the lighter and carry on. No need to replace it with something else, since it wasn't supposed to be there in the first place.
Que massa kk
haha ,,I I like this video....
