Germans and Serbs. There's an interesting Serbian movie from 2014 called "The Man Who Defended Gavrilo Princip." Princip's defense attorney was a man named Rudolf Zistler, an Austrian and a recent law school graduate who was appointed to the job. He was expected to throw the case but he put up a surprisingly good defense. The Austrian government was so outraged by the fact that he basically won the case they marched him to the border at gunpoint and kicked him out of the country. They wanted to hang him but the Hungarians vetoed the idea. It's on TH-cam with English subtitles. In any event, his argument wasn't that Princip didn't murder Franz Ferdinand but that (since Austria's annexation of Bosnia was illegal) he needed to be charged with murder (which didn't carry the death penalty) and not high treason (which did). The prosecution was dumbfounded that an ethnic German would defend a Slavic nationalist. His daughter later became the lead singer at the Sarajevo opera.

The problem is that the biggest Nazi division in Yugoslavia during the Second World War was called the "Prince Eugene Division." And that's interesting because Prince Eugene was an Italian not a German. He actually wanted a place in the French Army (He was brought up at Versailles) but his mother was involved in a very bizarre murder/conspiracy and the French King denied him a commission, so he went to the Habsburgs. The rest is history. Personally I don't like the neocon view of the Ottoman/Habsburg wars as a "clash of civilization." It was a clash between two empires. The French were traditionally allied with the Turks against the Austrians and the Serbs considered the Habsburgs their oppressors (who shot who in Sarajevo in 1914?) as much as the Ottomans. Eugene was a masterful general but he was no saint. He destroyed Sarajevo in the beginning of the 18th Century and ruined a great European Islamic city. It didn't recover its population until the 19th Century.

That statue in Kalemegdan is a statue of an Albanian, wearing the traditional Albanian hat.

I am from Srebia, and I can say people in Belgrade are not nice. At 10:50 This is horrible example of rude behavior from typically poor and uneducated Belgrade citizen. 120 dinars small bottle of water? What? That is robbery. In my town, same water costs 40 dinars!
Dont worry! Your people have been very hospitable and kind! You can be proud brother!
