Yes, unfortunately they have a short shelf life. It's best to sow as soon as they are dry and ready. Also even if you sow right away, I have found Euphorbia seeds have a low germination rate. I crossed my stellata x growenewaldii. Out of three seed capsules only one seed germinated. So I have only one. I took 3 seed capsules off my new horrida x polygona hybrid I bought. Only three seeds came up. When you sow them " don't! " tent them like cactus seeds.. They like more air. Plant them in a well drained cactus mix and keep moisture. They will sprout with in a week or two. And look like an herbaceous sprout. Don't let them dry out keep a little moisture in the soil and they should grow fairly fast as compared to cactus seedlings. Great use of the netting as a " safety net" just in case. Hope you get something from these if even one!!! What interesting prospects!!! A cool new Euphorbia!!! Thanks for sharing Ana!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas , best of luck🤞 Peace,Love,Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌺🍀🌷🌿💐🌳🍁🌻
It’s the 3rd day and I see about 3 coming up! 😃💪🏻 But they are in a bag. Should I take them out of the bag now? … Thanks for all these tips. I won’t feel as bad if I get poor germination rate. 😉
@@morrisparkintheozarks6831 how big do they have to get until you stop keeping the soil moist? I know that larger obesas aren't supposed to be watered too often as they're prone to root rot 😵💫
Ciao Ana, great video, as always. Your videos give me enthusiasm. I live in Italy, here the climate is very humid, different from the climate in Las Vegas, but through your videos I am improving my knowledge to cultivate desert plants. I wish you a fantastic flowery summer 🌸🌺🌵
I am so amazed at all of your knowledge of cacti,I really enjoy not just watching your videos but also learning more about cactus.Really enjoyed the video.
This is so interesting! From learning about male and female flowers to the methods to prevent the seed pods from exploding, this is a lot of useful information. Thank you for synthesizing all this into a coherent how-to. I hope the seeds are still viable. The hybrid could be pretty interesting.
Awesome video, Ana. I love that cup haha 😜 Congratulations on a successful pollination and harvest on the obesa, mine is constantly blooming along with the symmetricas but they’re all female plants unfortunately. Look forward to seeing these germinate and seeing what they look like. Thank you for sharing with us as always, Ana. Have a wonderful day and weekend from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜☕️
All my other Euphorbias are male. This is the only female I have so this Obesa will be the bearer of everyone else’s seeds. 😄 Thanks Daz and enjoy your weekend!
I hear you all talk about collecting the seeds and exploding seed pods.💥💥💥 But this was so great to actually get to see you collecting them.😍😍😍 Good luck...I am routing for all the seeds to germinate and grow you lots of babies!👶👶👶 Thank you for sharing!🌷🌷🌷
Thanks for these tips. I have 3 female Euphorbia obesa that I pollinated for the first time with a male obesa. There are now green fruits but I had not yet planned how I would recover the seeds. I had done Euphorbia seedlings in 2019 with purchased seeds. The title of the youtube video is: Mes semis d'euphorbes le 13 février 2019 It is true that the seeds are viable for a short time. That is surely why few have germinated.
Great Video, I had one of my Euphorbias pop and hundreds of seeds floated away like dandelion seeds ,it was pretty neat to see...I was actually able to collect the other three pods before they popped open...Thanks for that for future seed collecting👍👍👍
Dear Ana, thanks from Italy, we have already spoken (maybe you remember? So cool to see the harvest of the seed pods 🤩👌👏👏👏. I only have a few small obesa and pseudoglobosa seedlings right now, because I don't find them in my local garden center and got some seedlings from other collectors. But I will follow this in the future, thank you Ana for all the advice you give! 👌🙏💞.

Hello, dear manager, I like your program very much. Please provide them with Persian subtitles so that Persian speakers can also use your experience and knowledge. I have a few cacti, but every time they either dry out or are destroyed, I want to know. What is the reason that your program is really interesting and adds to the botanical science of Adam? I love you very much. Thank you for your beautiful program.
I did the same cross pollination with my female obesa & male anoplia just over a decade ago. The resulting offspring when mature are not that impressive - kind of like a fatter, shorter anoplia that doesn't have offsets around it's base. My most impressive cross was a male horrida ( snowflake ) to a female susannae x bupleurifolia, the resulting offspring look very similar to an astrophytum ornaitum cactus but without the thorns. Obesa to horrida, obesa to valida & horrida to valida crosses result in very nice looking offspring too. Regular horrida or horrida ( snowflake ) to an obesa throws a lot of variation & when using the snowflake variety only a few offspring are white. Horrida to anoplia - don't waste you time - lol. As with all Euphorbia cross pollination - it's worth doing just to select the weirder offspring but the majority of the offspring are going to be nothing special. It would take many generations of selective breeding over many years to develope a new variety that's visually worthwhile & breeds true so just enjoy whatever your cross pollinating produces & remember you can always give away the excess & culls as gifts. Good luck
Oh thank you so much for all those tips! My seedlings are growing well. They do look like fat Anoplias. 😂 It is interesting that they don’t offset, obviously that’s the trait they got from the Obesa.
@@CactusCaffeine I just went over some old photos & the Horrida ( snowflake ) I spoke of is actually a Polygona ( snowflake ). I'll try sending some photos of my Euphorbia crosses to your email.
