  • "American Eyewitnesses to the Nazi Rise to Power" is the third presentation in the Amarillo Public Library’s Modern Perspectives on the Holocaust lecture series. It was presented live on October 8, 2022, by Andrew Nagorski, an award-winning journalist and author who spent more than three decades as a foreign correspondent and editor for Newsweek Magazine. He is the author of eight books, including "Hitlerland: American Eyewitnesses to the Nazi Rise to Power" and "The Nazi Hunters."
During the 1920s and 1930s, many American journalists, diplomats, academics, and others found themselves in Germany, observing the cascade of events that would lead directly to World War II and the Holocaust. Based on their firsthand accounts and interviews, Nagorski describes their experiences and perspectives-and what conclusions they drew at the time-without the benefit of hindsight. He also places their experiences in context, noting that even some prominent German and Austrian Jews were slow to recognize the catastrophe in the making. Among these was Sigmund Freud, the subject of Nagorski's latest book "Saving Freud: The Rescuers Who Brought Him to Freedom."
