I've lived in China for 5 years and WeChat is super helpful. However, it isn't "necessary". All of the things she used for examples are also availible on Alipay. Also, her getting refused from that H&M store isn't what would happen, they would accept an Alipay health code. (my city's shops have even stopped checking health codes, maybe only banks or government buildings still check them - all cities will be a little different) Every single mom and pop (or brick/mortar) shop that I've gone to accepts both wechat and Alipay digital payment systems. It looks like this woman is a foreign correspondent in China. She is very aware of these things.
Did you ever thought both wechat and ali pay are good way to escape tax? During the pandemic break, I ordered some meal in Chinese Restaurants, they always told me to pay by wechat.
@@chenchen-vm5es I can tell you that your thoughts are superfluous, because in China, taxes are calculated based on invoices, and WeChat and Alipay are only used as payment tools, just like swiping a credit card and giving change. The situation you mentioned is because of the large population in China, it is more troublesome to find change, so it is more recommended that you use WeChat payment, which is more convenient.
Its crazy to give this much control to companies who inevitably are controlled by a dictator. But I get it- my social media is a lot like this too. In fact it’s HOW I control my own water and electric accounts and considering I’ve been in my own lockdown for an entire year now, surviving with overlapping lung disease... I’ve only been around 3 people in over a year. Kinda rely on social media ... So it’s no good when they’re having a bad day. Thanks a million @Twitter
No, but WeChat is one app. Like you said, to do all the things that WeChat can do, you currently use multiple apps. WeChat just combines everything in one.
If Tencent wants to stay. Facebook, TH-cam, and Amazon should be allowed in China in its entirety as well. Just to keep it fair. Tariffs are on everything except software and services.
FB and google left China themselves first because they refused to comply local law and take down terrorism contents. After they left and China lock the door when they want to return for Chinese $
Christian Co Agreed. being in china every now and then for the last few decades, I must say it’s an integral part for brainwashing, censoring, and building a police state.
FB cannot beat tiktok becuase one is 3G product, another is 4G product, In China there is 2 or 3 media show competitor. there is main reason, people found tiktok is better than others. Now China move to 5G, in the near future, there are a lot of VR related app in China, or other hardware new brand....... keep these words, after 5 years, you will find the different world.

as long as CCP has total control, it doesn’t matter. I will be very surprised if both of them don’t have an in house commissar.

In fact, Most of small restaurants in China are tax-free.
The importance has definitely increased, there are businesses that do not accept cash and only accept WeChat pay

Amazon was allowed and failed in China. Facebook was banned after the Xinjiang riots. TH-cam is a grey area as it is accessible with a VPN
