understanding simple hand defense and body rotation from the hips is something that most boxers don't even know. also the dead back foots in punches🤮. for newbies you might want to break boxing up to into back foot rotation hip rotation and wrist rotation with full extension from the shoulder blade so its not an arm punch. also never looking at the opponents face. chin tucked and focused on the chin/chest area of the opponent. the face is no threat....

Boxing outside of its sport is a supplemental art. Under a less restrictive rule set it cannot stand by itself. But as an additive to your kickboxing/ Muay Thai it will only make you better and better. In 13 years of coaching I have never had a student get worse from doing both. But it could be the teaching style. I teach from a perspective of using hands to set everything else up. I had a heavy boxing background. My best students go once or twice a week to a pure boxing gym and get work in and they only get better and better at kickboxing overall.

As a former Boxer turned Muay Thai fighter, I can confirm that there is a HUGE advantage with my hands against most kickboxers/Muay Thai fighters. But just like you said, I had to unlearn certain body mechanics that wouldn’t work for KB and it was a painful process to say the least 😅 I went on to win an amateur world title with just 8 months of Muay Thai training (14 fights in boxing)

@@AxaFinRemember that they are totally different sports and that you will have to modify or change your footwork, stance, head movement, timing, distance and you may get them confused if you are learning both at the same time (IMO). I say choose Muay Thai first because it’s the closest to MMA and then add the pure boxing later, just because the clinching and extra weapons would be priority for you to learn.

@@lobohez7222 I had to unlearn my bladed (sideways) boxing stance, so I could check leg kicks and like Gabe said, dipping my head into the more dangerous strikes. So I would weave under a hook and eat a kick 🤦‍♂️😅 happened a few times before I had enough. Also I remember I would get in trouble for pushing in boxing, but in Muay Thai it is a huge weapon, so I’m learning to add it back into my arsenal. Push someone off balance mid combo or when they are striking to throw them off and create openings.

yup, but did you spar MT guys? I feel many times when boxers come to the MT gym, they just get shut down fast, because they eat elbows and clinch knees when going close. Same with dutch kick though when i go to some other gyms. The gym is "k1" but their clinch, knees and kicks are awful usually. Easy to shut them when I can clinch, hard to fight when only boxing and lows are allowed. Then the pace is so much higher than MT.

My son started Muay Thai 5 months ago and I started taking him to a boxing gym a few weeks ago just to fill in the space between Muay Thai classes. I asked the boxing coaches not to mess with his stance or do any low dipping or big head movements with him as it’ll be dangerous when he’s doing Muay Thai due to the kicks and knees. The coach is cool about it and understands because he used to do TKD and knows what happens if you drop your head down too low. He does Muay Thai 3 days a week and boxing 2 days a week. Although the boxing is more strength and conditioning, he does the adult class because the kids classes are on the same days as Muay Thai
Most Muay Thai gyms have a dedicated boxing coach these days so the boxing is definitely getting better

I train both boxing and Muay Thai and have been since I first came to my gym. Boxing absolutely helps with my Muay Thai. So long as you can identify the purpose of the technique and consciously know when and when not to use them in Muay Thai/Kickboxing you should be good. I do slip and change levels, even use the Philly shell in sparring when boxing, but I don’t in Thai, because it’s just that much riskier. But being comfortable in the pocket and having sharp, quick, powerful punches on the inside + the out boxing abilities to make angles, stay safe, and create opportunities is great. Not only does it let you box in Thai, it sets up other things. Those angles you make in boxing lead to free kicks. Outperforming someone in the pocket lets you really find those good knees when you incorporate clinch with it. Definitely worth boxing for Muay Thai, but get the fundamentals first

Great video! Two factors to consider are: “Bobbing & weaving” as taught in Boxing is much riskier to do in Muay Thai. Also, Boxing has a much more bladed stance than Muay Thai in general; so that affects the mechanics of how the strikes are thrown.

    • @moustachio334
      @moustachio334 ปีที่แล้ว

Boxing doesn’t have a bladed stance but a more open stance so they can generate more power from the legs. If leg kicks didn’t exist in Muay Thai then MT fighters would do the same just as they used to do in Muay Boran.

    • @bigjay24910

For a beginner, that person should only focus on one or the other and if he/she does both then it’s best to do so with the same gym. If they go to a boxing only gym then they learn bad head movement habits for kickboxing but if they have a gym with two coaches working together for the fighter to achieve a goal then it’s much better.

Parents did not allow me to do kickboxing at first so I started with boxing at 16 first for 2,5 years. Then I transitioned to Kickboxing.
My hands like putting the combos together...or putting all my bodyweight into the punches was remarkably superior to the kickboxing guys. My kicks catched up fast. Maybe because I played a lot of soccer and the mechanics of kicking a football and a leg is very similiar (Aldo one of the best leg kickers in MMA was a former soccer player too).
I had some problems though. Like mixing kicks into my combinations. Often I just threw just hands combinations and single kicks. Also my stand was too wide making me vulnerable to lowkicks more (more difficult to check than in a narrow stance).
All in all I am happy that I had the time to focus on the hands and would recommend it.

There are 2 muay thai gyms near me run by former (successful) pro fighters who combine it with Western boxing, so it's almost more like Dutch-style kickboxing with elbows and clinch added rather than a more traditional muay thai style. The one I go to is also licensed with the local boxing governing body and has dedicated boxing classes, and the kru sometimes makes us focus on just boxing, so the two sports absolutely go together for me 🙂 Obviously ends up with a harder learning curve than focusing on just one or the other, but I'm comfortable with sucking for a while until I really get things down 😅

I train at Elite Muay Thai in South Daytona, Florida and I take the 6pm boxing class then right into 7pm Muay Thai class. I've been training Muay Thai for about a year now and for about 10.5 months I wasn't taking boxing classes, since I didn't want to learn bad habits, or that's what I convinced myself, like slipping a punch and my head would be right there for a kick. From my experience in only Muay Thai I was taking to many shots to the head and it was more like eat one and give one back. I can stand and bang all day, but that's not good for long term. Gotta protect that chin and brain, so I started getting into boxing and found my footwork and rhythm again. Muay Thai kinda made me forget how to dance, but with boxing I found my footwork and can be light on my feet and move in all directions. I can shuffle sideways, then step in and rotate to throw that southpaw left rear kick. I feel by taking both classes at the same time is definitely the move if you're training. I don't regret only focusing on Muay Thai though, competing here is Muay Thai, so sharpening those checks, teeps, elbows, clinch, KNEES. Love it, thanks for sharing your knowledge champ 🙏

I started both boxing and muay thai at the same time. boxing was super useful as it fixed my punching technique, evading punches and feeling comfortable at short and medium range. but in muay thai sparring it was either a kicking distance or a clinch work. so the fact is I could not get in medium range and show my boxing skills.
at a certain moment I gave up boxing using some basic punches and concentrated solely on muay thai.
yes - good boxing gives me certain advantage over guys who practice solely muay thai but it is just a portion of technique to be learned

I've had to stagger learning the two. There are a lot of shared principles between the two - angles, striking mechanics, footwork, even some clinching technqiues - but there are important differences between the two. For instance, when I'm boxing, I have to stay mindful of how I roll and slip. Too much down and in MT I'd catch a knee to the face. Likewise in Muay Thai, using leanbacks is very useful for evasion, but leaning back too far in boxing exposes me to vicious close range hooks and I'm unable to quickly reposition. I think of fights as a range and angle chess match: my jab, straight rear and teeps are the same range; overhands, hooks, long knees, roundhouses are clustered together too; and at close range, elbows, hooks, side/straight knee, and clinch work. I have to learn two different sets of defensive techniques and have multiple guards, but I like the work and the artistry and the learning process of it all.

Ive been doing boxing on and off 2 years but the last 4-5 monthd ive been committed and taking it a lot more serious try and go 5 days aweek to the gym. I eventually wanna throw in some Muy Tai but boxing forsure is my base.
I feel it will be very hard to break my stance, is it still possible to get effective results without using a more traditional tai stance. I like being light on my feet and having that bounce and agility. I know muy tai is a lot heavier on the feet because of kicks and being more grounded.
I can probably break slips and roles a lot easier than movement. Any advice is appreciated.

imo you only need to train more than one striking martial art if you are planning on becoming a pro mma fighter. besides that you would probably be better with one of them. if you really want to incorporate a second martial art then it would be extremely more beneficial to pick something like bjj or wrestling. a second striking art like boxing will just patch a small hole in your muay thai game whereas grappling will add a whole new world to your fighting. i'd go muay thai and nogi bjj as my first option and boxing and wrestling as my second.

I’m in a unique situation, where I train at a boxing gym that has Muay Thai training on the side as a secondary thing. After about six months of training exclusively Muay Thai, I got absolutely SMOKED by one of the boxing coaches who visited our sparring session. Ever since, I’ve been doing boxing and Muay Thai drilling and Sparring half and half. Here’s some improvements I’ve gain d since doing both.
1.) while the head movement is not as useful, I think Boxing’s bigger emphasis on staying off the center line was important eye opener for me. It’ll be a lil different cuz of kicks ofc but a lot of guys at my experience level who only do Muay Thai aren’t nearly as familiar with how center line and angles work, and it’ll give you an edge if you know how to abuse that.
2.) I’m way less reliant on my rear roundhouse kick. My left roundhouse kick (I’m southpaw) was my “money” shot and everything I did was mostly setting that up to hit clean. When it was taken from me in boxing I had no idea what to do, and just jabbed a lot. Now I’m way more comfortable doing stuff like setting up a powerful left cross or left uppercut, as well as setting up a left roundhouse kick.
3.) Conditioning. A lot of Muay Thai fighters spar at a low intensity and a low pace. Boxers tend to go harder and go a lot faster too. Learning how to keep up with a boxer pace makes you more prepared for a fight I feel. And you’ll find yourself able to disrupt the temp of Muay Thai purists a lot easier.
Bonus: I’m a heavier guy. Muay Thai is a smaller sport so it can be much harder to find guys 200 pounds or more to have even rounds with. I’m 6’2, 210 lbs, and a southpaw, so Muay Thai sparring was a lil bit easier than it should be, and I had little hard sparring experience cuz I didn’t want to hurt my much smaller partners at the gym. It’s much easier to find sizable sparring partners to have proper hard rounds with in boxing. That alone is making me contemplate switching sports ngl lol.

@@ancientdarkness3102 he’s talking about sparring. Muay Thai/kickboxers don’t spar at the same intensity as boxers. That’s because if they did their bodies would get too worn down. Wheres in boxing there’s not the same toil on the body.

Boxing has a lot of body punches esp for shorter fighters, infighting which cant use effectively in muay thai as u might get knee or clinched. Muay thai stance cant punch heavily as compared to boxing but mt has elbows which most gyms dont encourage using unless for pro fighters training for pro match.
Tall fighters has alot of advantage in mt. Knees, elbows, clinch, high kicks and most of the technique is gear to more taller longer reach fighters advantage. Shorter fighters can win but must be aggressive which also need to use boxing to knock out tallers fighters. Shorter fighters with good technique need to learn from very young like saechai in particular.
For boxing wise not really, shorter fighters still has their own strategy to beat taller fighters esp using infighting or speed.
