    I love that Lorne is having his portrait done while getting his nails done and then sings with an opera voice.

    • @TuckerWhite94
      @TuckerWhite94 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      And whoever's idea it was to have Lorne Michaels' opera part so obviously dubbed over is a genius.

    • @shawnuel
      @shawnuel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The best part of the whole thing is Lorne's self-satisfied smirk right after "singing" that note!

  • @FishbowlPhenom
    @FishbowlPhenom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +882

    Without hyperbole, this has an argument for the best cold open in the whole show’s history. It encapsulates so many of the show’s trademarks, and does so with a quintessential host and one of the best cast line-ups they had any year. Lorne even appeared. If one were ever to introduce the show to someone with absolutely no exposure, this would be a pretty ideal entry point really.

    • @mikestevenson576
      @mikestevenson576 3 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      This is why I think they lost their way acting like they have to open with politics every single week. They've forgotten their own show's DNA.

    • @dja-train2265
      @dja-train2265 3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I think without a doubt this is the most memorable cold open ever. If I were given the opportunity to compile a prime time special with all of my favorite sketches and musical guests, I would open with this number. Loved it when it first aired, love it even more now.

    • @david203
      @david203 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@mikestevenson576 It's not just opening with politics that is bad. It's having the same few plots for every, single, sketch, all, night, long.

    • @mikestevenson576
      @mikestevenson576 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@david203 It's a very tough era for writing SNL comedy. Woke NYC audiences shut down very fast on certain topics, words, or attitudes. Don't mean that as a political statement. It's just got to be very challenging for the writers to thread the needle.

    • @david203
      @david203 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@mikestevenson576 That's a very good point. Just after years of the unavoidable insanity that was Trump and still being mired in the many problems of pandemic, a morose or picky audience will not inspire comedians to show their genius.

    • @benphillips2947

      By all accounts that was always the most genuine version of himself on the show. Chris Farley absolutely loved the fact that he was treading on the same floorboards as his heroes. Him finding pieces from wardrobe worn by previous cast members and hosts like he does at the beginning of this sketch isn't too far off from real life. David Spade said he'd always go out of his way to pick out shirts and pants worn by John Belushi whenever he could.

    I think my favorite part probably starts around 1:45, when Steve walks into frame and in the background they have random extras dressed as ... almost everything and anything. Extras that never even appeared in a sketch for the show that night, rehearsal or live. Just men and women to stand around as set dressing in weird-as-hell costumes. I wonder who came up with that touch in the writers' room, because it's awesome.
