- Last weekend I travelled to Siena, in Tuscany, Italy to be "on tour" with my good friends at Garda Bike Hotel, who had laid on some spectacular cycling and events over the course of the Strade Bianche Classics race - cumulating in me taking part in the Gran Fondo which follow's the lady's and men's race on the Saturday.
It was my first time cycling in Tuscany, and wow!!! Simply wow!! Beautiful undulating countryside, with contrasting silky tarmac and plenty of iconic white gravel. It was an exceptional event, within an exceptional weekend with exceptional company.
You'll see extracts of the UCI pro men's race plus my own effort navigating the Gran Fondo, Strade Bianche, including the iconic white gravel sectors and the famous final climb into Siena. An experience I will cherish forever.

What were the wheels and tyres you had for the rental bike? I heard you mention in the video but didn't quite catch it. What a fabulous event to have access to closed roads for!
@@ChrisP978 I had 32mm tyres to avoid punctures (and much more comfortable on the gravel) - the wheels were alloy as opposed to carbon - can’t remember the brand👍. And for sure - closed roads are an absolute luxury 👌

From the king of Zwift to the king of the white gravel! with limited experience on the gravel you were flying up the climbs passing riders with ease and the last climb looked incredible 💪

It’s an absolutely incredible route, in a sublime part of the world - a must do Fondo, so stick it on your list Ruben (but bring the wider tyres - punctures are an issue) ! Looking forward to seeing you for a very very tough proposition in early April 💯

And with a Events like that one you tend to still be thinking about it a few weeks after with the enjoyment and the scenery and everything else that goes with it just brilliant. No moving on to your next one it’s the 312 isn’t it?

Excellent footage! I also entered the GF Stradebianchi this year for the first time, and even stayed in the same Garden Hotel! I ended 798th place, not to bad for a 56 year old I guess.

And thanks ever so much 🙏 - it was an incredible event, wasn’t it - sublime part of the word, and much harder to climb steep punchy climbs on the gravel 😅 Congratulations on your 798th place - clearly you are very fit indeed. And I hope that cycling will help me be as fit when i too reach 56 in 8 years ! 💪✊

Really brilliantly put together looked a load of fun, captures everything what makes riding a bike so much fun. But watching riders struggle just to get up those climbs just show what freaks the world tour riders are.

Now I remember you two years ago or so, hestitating to go ride outside. And look at you now, riding the most scary looking gravel routes in a peloton. And you seem almost comfortable. What an experience this must have been. Wonderful video again.
Indeed I was Agnes!! Especially after my crash…. And it’s been a lovely journey, gradually building confidence and taking on different events. The final climb is an absolute beauty - and you dig a little harder because you know it’s the last hard bit - loved the entire event ! 🏴👌Yep - it’s always a bit of a balance to go slower and stop occasionally for the filming - but I’m as into the artistic side of the video as much as the performance, so we’ll worth losing a place or 2 . Here’s hoping for better news from the peace negotiations 🇺🇦

That is so dope !!!! Catches the purity and essence of cycling ..the beauty !!! Great video production too !! Looks like a blast ..I followed the Tour de France one year from stage to stage for 10 days and did the giro the year after ….so good
The gravel is exceptional - when dry - so the pace is good. But climbing - especially steeper gradients are a lot harder due to reduced traction. But definitely one of my favourite ever rides - and how the pros manage to maintain such high speed on the climbs is on another level 💪💯

Epic video , captured the atmos of the weekend perfectly . 52mm tyres ? Sensible choice but am surprised you werent chased outta town by a torch burning mob :) Lucky enough to do event myself last year and lots of locals were on 25mm !

a terrific occasion. without a poundland, ladbrokes, or kebab shop to foul the view. gravel is probably the best outdoor thing to happen to cycling in my lifetime: it’s to road cycling and traffic wot trail running is to road running.

As ever thats lovely of you to say so Pierre-Alain🙏. Hoping to stay healthy and injury free for 2022 - because plenty more is planned 🤞. And for sure - I have been using the little Insta 360 Go 2 (not the 4D one) because in the events with lots of other riders, it’s easier to store in the pocket and quickly deploy (but the quality isn’t as good as the GoPro)👍

Hey Phil….Awesome video, as always!!! I thought I heard you say, 52mm tires? However, they look like 32mm. Could you tell us what your full setup was for the ride, especially with it being mixed surface. Thank you and keep up the outstanding work.
Hi Baxter - and thanks ever so much, thats massively appreciated 🙏 The bike was the Pinerello Grevel, with Ultegra and disc. And you are correct - 32mm tyres (with inner tubes). There is a decent amount of tarmac (c60%-65% I’d estimate) but the gravel is very substantial, and certainly I found it challenging and was glad of the greater comfort from the wider tyres, but also the better reliability. Non of the people who did this with me on the same set up, punctured (7 of us - hired from Andiamo Cycling who arranged the event) - but there were a lot of punctures from those on thinner tyres. Plenty did it on their standard road bikes with 25mm- but I’d take the reliability as my priority
Bike riding at its best. No wonder people are giving the Strade a 'classic' status.
Thanks Gerben 🙏 - and for sure it was an incredible cycling event, in a sublime part of the countryside - a perfect cycling experience👌 From TV I’d always enjoyed the Strade Bianche - and thought it was a monument, but learn that it doesn’t have that official status - and to my mind, it should. It’s unique, sublime and massively challenging - the TV doesn’t do justice to just how relentless the ups and downs are and just how steep and difficult the gravel ramps are 🤩💯🇮🇹

On these events I do take moments to go slower or stop in order to capture the moment - I’m as interested in the artistic side as the speed. I’m always looking ahead trying to guess where the nice shots are to be had. Hi Martin - its an open event and you can sign up each year on the GranFondo Strade Bianche website - or via Andiamo Cycling which is who I went with. Highly recommended👌🇮🇹
