HOW TO ATTRACT DOLPHINS TO YOUR SAILING BOAT - Ep:13

  • Do you have any strategies for attracting dolphins or whales to come and swim along side your sailing boat?, we do!
    Sailing across the Irish Sea is the next instalment of our boat life adventure, as we head back over to England on our blue water cruising sailing boat.
    On this leg of the trip we're lucky enough to be joined by several large pods of Dolphins on our sail, for which Carly is certain that her methods for attracting them are the reason why.
    Do you have ant strategy for encouraging dolphins or whales to join you on your adventure??, If so, do let us know in the comments and we'll swap ideas :)

    I just subbed, I just retired and am getting ready to live aboard again. This time I am going for comfort, instead of a floating bed and toilet with a steering wheel that has no need for flood insurance. I checked out your channel for the boat, never heard of one before, I like it! Oh yeah, the dolphins came for the tunes, they just LOVE music and can hear it through the hull. I found out years ago that usually worked. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young or Jimmy Buffet seemed to bring around the best for my taste in music. Fair wind and a following sea!

    They looked like short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), a wonderful sight, dolphins swimming in bio luminescence is the most ethereal sight.
    I know this was all a little tongue and cheek, but just a few of my pointers for bow riding.
    Maintain steady course and speed, your Warrior 38 should be just perfect the social interactive species enjoy surfing bow wake (but many species do not interact...don't push it), if a few people can safely move forward to help the bows push a little more water all the better. 4-6 kts is a great speed.
    Remain calm, they are curious wild animals (some people call out, play interesting music, which is fine.....just no drums, tympany or triangles).
    Running engines is fine (consensus is that it's reassuring for dolphins to help locate position of the boat) however I do like to turn my echo sounder off if safe to do so, as they produces a loud continuous clicks which I'm sure is unwanted noise polution (so no need to make it uncomfortable for them)
    Don't chase them down or intercept their course especially whales, try and maintain a respectful distance (let them come to you), many places have guidelines for whale watching.
    Tinned fish hmmmmmm.....no, feeding wild animals no!.....that being said from my time on commercial fishing boats dolphins can be very selective, know what they like and can easilly become habitualised to/take advantage of an easy, tasty fresh live meal. I have observed them selectively choosing aparitives like prawns, whiting, wolf herring, hairtail, mackrel, tuna and squid from commercial catches.
    Happy days

    • @CadohaAdventures
      @CadohaAdventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They really are incredibly curious and very playful animals. When I was alone with them, I did wonder, given how smart they are, do you think they realise that I’m a separate entity to the boat? You know how an orca can differentiate between a seal and floating ice, as in they are aware that a seal is ‘hiding’ on top of a block of ice, do you think a dolphin knows we are living creatures, on a floating object?

    ps re the whales etc...I live in the whale capital of Australia, Hervey Bay, Queensland...the Humpbacks migrate north from the Antarctic to breed from July to November every year and there ARE thousands of them. Even an albino (very famous, Migaloo) Humpback. The pros that do the whale watching tours simply glide up to about 300m from a pod and the whales just come to you and have a look. They are very inquisitive. Check out some footage on TH-cam. Well woth the trip to Oz...!! (lol)

    If you do not have to make an unplanned stop or a detour your not sailing. Dolphin are smart, and very curious. My way of calling dolphin is to do a slow rhythmic pounding on the hull. From a nice seat on deck aft, simply slap the hull once every 5-7 seconds. Not a loud knock out punch. Just as simple boom.........boom.......boom....boom. Within 5 min. you will have dolphin if any are in the area. I have had those love creatures get within 2 feet of me, roll a bit on their side to get a good look at who is making that boom sound. They will hang around for a good look time. The seem genuinely happy, at least they are all smiling at me.
