I had this camera back in the day, my first digital. When I look back at family snaps, they hold up, not as crisp super sharp, but softer and more film like. Dropped my original camera when the lens was extended, end of camera. Just bought a working one for $20 NZ - pocket change really. Neat to see others out there interested in older digital cameras too....
У меня тоже эта была первая цифровая камера и когда я смотрю архивные фото, они мне очень нравится, на них хочется смотреть, я смотрю на профессиональном мониторе, и скажу вам что цветопередача у этого 20 летнего аппарата очень реалистичная
What a great video. Cheers. I have a number of similarly aged digicams now, and just ordered a G3 to go with my collection of Canon DSLRs. I think I'm ready for how slow this one will be, but hopefully I'll be able to eek out some good images. I like shooting these ancient cameras, that's lots of fun to be had.
The interior shot at 5:24 is really nice, great colours. The G3 video capability is toy level, older lo-fi tape camcorders have more character, and they're cheap.
Can you mount a filter on the lens? If yes what diameter is the threading? I believe they used to sell macro/wide angle adaptors for the g3 but I’m not sure what mounting system they used. Would love to find out :)
In 2023 This is all you need for hobby photography or family/vacation photo documenting. The balance between soft and sharp at 4mp to 6mp is perfect. Pleasing to the eye and the colors this produces are wonderful.
Great video. I bought one new in 2002 just after my son was born and it was really good at that time. Still have it now, but only for sentiment reasons. I might power it up and capture a few shots.
Danny, you definitely should. A few days ago I took my G5 for a spin with my 5Dm2, and it held up fairly nicely. Landscapes were remarkably good- no cropability, so talk about needing to get everything right in-camera. It's one of older gadgets you can't throw away or sale, and sits in a closet gathering dust.
I’m a bit of a fan of the camera/playback thumb switch. :) I think the G6 was the last Powershot to have it. Regarding the optical viewfinder: I think it was common to just include it without much reflection during the early 00s, which was still a time of transition from film cameras to digital.
I had this camera around 2005 and loved it till I got a Canon Pro1. Im now getting another if I can find one at the right price. You really should make more films if you have time. Good to watch & listen to. Many thanks 👍👍
I just got this camera but I have a problem: When i make pictures outside they are mega overexposed. It doesnt help when i change the Shutterspead or whatever. When im making pictures inside its fine. Can someone help?
Many people don't know but half of your cons can be overcome if you just get the S model. Canon s40 s50 s60 s70 have the same sensor and shoot raw files like their G model equivalent. There may be some differences on some of them with the lens but they all have high quality lenses and are much smaller like little bricks. Of course they are slow and LCD is terrible but it's a heck of a lot faster than getting film developed and a thousand times cheaper. $20 + to shoot and develop one roll of film or $20 + and shoot hundreds of thousands of pictures.
My Powershot S95 lies dead in the drawer with the notorious lens error. The first time the lens was replaced for free by Canon years ago. Nowadays one needs to buy a new lens and sensor unit from China for almost as much as the camera is worth, plus the labour to replace the unit. While the old Powershot G series cameras were semi pro models built to last, while the S series crammed in all those electronics and moving parts in a tiny casing with many things prone to break.
I bought this camera at a yard sale awhile back and I’m not good with cameras, but I’m not sure if this camera will work without a cf card because it won’t turn on and I’ve charged it already. help
Great review! I bought a mint Powershot G2 for 70 bucks earlier this year. I create my own filmlike ICC profiles for it in Capture One with a Colorchecker SG and now the colors are really awesome while Capture One just desaturates almost all hues to make the RAWs look completely dull. I can even create profiles to make its color rendering look like any modern mirrorless camera. The RAW files can be upressed with Lightroom super resolution with incredibly good results. The dynamic range is surpisingly good and the lens is ultra sharp and has beautiful character. It's my most used camera nowadays, before I would lug around my Canon R5 and lenses sometimes along with a Pentax 67. Now I just grab the G2 and it's so fun and creative. Plus I avoid the back pain from all the lugging around camera gear. Now, I am tempted to get a G3 too, but just got a 3MP Nikon Coolpix 990, which shoots TIFFs with stunning color straight out of the camera and has a swivel lens/screen design which has no equal in today's modern cameras. The early digicams had so much user friendly and practical innovation which has been lost. Today it's all about pixel peeping and plastic noise free images.
Thank you for this helpful video! Do you know how to connect the camera to your laptop later to view the pictures? I have a suitable cable but my device somehow does not recognize the camera. :/
After some research and testing I've found the answer to your question: You need to install some special Canon G3 software and USB driver in order to connect and view the images straight from the camera, you'd get this software from an install disc that came with the camera. Unfortunately, even if you had the install disc I'm not sure if the software would work on modern computer operating systems since this software was designed for Windows 98/XP and MacOS 9 which are nearly 20 years old at this point. If you had an older machine that was running either of these older OS and could find the install disc than that could work, but nowadays it'd be much easier (and cheaper probably) to buy a CF card reader that connects to your computer directly, I use one that I got for about €10 and has lasted me years.
@@az0912611 Thank you very much for your effort and your research! I actually tried a program for Canon. Even though it could be installed, it did not work. You were right, a CF card reader was the best option, I went for that now. Have a great day!
Just found an immaculate one one ebay for $60 in the box like brand new!! What gets overlooked is the 35 to 140mm lens thats an f2 to f3. Thats noteworthy. Also the iso ratings are way conservative. So iso 100 is really iso 200ish For a 21 yr old cam is pretty darn good. AND... the fact that the lower A series models are going for more than double the price is crazy because they are not as good in everyway
Me too. $60 like new in the box . The lens is no joke like u said and iso ratings are off. Idk why canon did this. AND YEP !! why is the A series going for way way more $$
At 2:05 you see the off button with a grey ring around it, you press in a little button and turn the ring to the left towards the red camera icon. If you've done it right then you see a little red light come on and your camera will power up. Happy Shooting!
I can use the charger (cg-580) and batteries (bp-511) from my other dust collector - Canon 1OD, though, IMHO, it's the Canon with the best weight and balance.
My first, and it was great. Now it‘s a rangefinder (Leica M9) and after 10 years it still makes amazing pictures, no need to „upgrade“. I love the simplicity and to be in complete control of all the parameters.
You think this music is annoying? You must not watch a lot of TH-cam videos cuz this is a lot better than a whole lot of them. I thought the music was fine and the video is great.
Love this video! I recently bought a canon g3 and I'm very excited to shoot with it. Unfortunately, the ND filter isn't working I don't think. Do you know if it has to be in a certain mode for it to work?

2nd vid on your channel and it's made with such great quality. That is impressive!
This was my first digital camera. Loved it! Then I wanted less lag, so i upgraded to the Digital Rebel (300D). Amazing at the time.

Thank you for making this video, I obviously couldn’t find any video that explains how does the camera works !! So thanks 👍🏼
Neither could, that’s why I decided to make this video so that others could learn about this camera. That you very much for watching it btw ❤️
Thank you. I had a 4mp Vivitar with a Canon lens. Back then it was $400.
I just got this camera but I have a problem: When i make pictures outside they are mega overexposed. It doesnt help when i change the Shutterspead or whatever. When im making pictures inside its fine. Can someone help?
Thank you for your review! I have a G11 and it has been a long time since I used it-might as well power it up sometime after watching your video :D
I feel the same way. I’m going to take out my G11 soon too. Cheers 🍻
Wow amazing video joe!!!
3:21 I remember it has a 320x240 option, then why you use 160x120 instead of 320x240?
I have one with which I take very good photos and now the shutter is stuck, instead I have a G11 that is lower in results

Absolutely loved this review! Keep them coming!!!
hey dude! don't press so much on the top lcd when holding it...
How do I view the image on the screen? My LCD screen is always black
I feel like I just took a college course on this. Thanks for the video!

The gh 4 is pretty small. I think most of us started on Pentax.. Use a SD to c.f. adapter
Got my for 20 bucks in good condition so I am happy.
What on earth does the muzak add?

You can either purchase an external battery charger or use a charger that connects directly to the camera and charges the battery through it.

I just bought the compact s400 for 55 in the box used once and it has the same sensor as the g3
It’s the CCD sensor Joe. They still remain special. That colour!
The 10mp CCD cameras are my favourite, plenty of resolution and ccd colours
Can you make a movie about Power Shot G7 (2006)
Lmao the video quality is that of a flip phone video clip. 🤣 love these videos of old cameras!

It should work in any of the photo modes, although I don’t think it’d work on the video mode but that’s to be expected.
