Very interesting observations on the "good ol days" expression, the advancement of technology and the fine tuning of QA (and I don't mean Quercus Alba xD). As always... very interesting insights and well explained :) cheers!
I apologize for my bad English. In Bulgaria, there is a double standard for most food products imported from Europe. There is a double standard for whiskey imports, color, taste, etiquette has less data ... and this is done consciously by the manufacturers and the price is not lower. So if I want to drink a quality bottle of whiskey I have to go abroad and buy it, which is very unfortunate.
Mr. Luening, nothing produced under corporative auspices would be better than hands-on production output. Why? Because corporations always try to maximize their profits by OPTIMIZING the industrial (not artisanal) process , and always attempt to cut costs as much as possible. And there is also another reason, what corporations do, they do for the love of money, not for bringing out the true intrinsic quality of the product and the LOVE and APPRECIATION of its character and personality on behalf of consumers/admirers.
Sometimes in order to increase demand for a product, the product HAS to be a statement of quality and dedication and not the lust for money. This statement is by all means incorrect.
This is why people wont / at least shouldnt buy poor quality single malts (or more expensive blends). When it comes to quality artisanal products like single malt whiskey, the quality should be represented by good sales. This is how craft beer for example competes against those big corporate breweries.

Back in the early days, the grass was greener and the sky was bluer...

This is anecdotal.
Not at all a factual statement but anecdotal and seemingly opinion based.
