We wait till we're 18yrs before we write WAEC & NECO, then wait for God knows how long before university will decide to admit you despite meeting admission requirement, then ASUU strike will add an extra yr, then NYSC another year... yet key employers expect you not to be older than 28yrs for a graduate trainee position... we serve a miracle working God🙏

For God's sake! What is happening to Nigeria and Nigeria policy makers? What makes a child mature to enter into the University-age?
A baby-child of 12 to 15 years can get married and become an adult(according to the law) but can't be admitted into the University. Can the Minister come out with an empirical statistics to show that the % of students under 18 drop out of the University more than the students above 18. All said and done when you enter into the University at 18(all things being equal), stayed in University for 6,7,8 years courtesy of strikes and graduates at 26 then serve at 27, then start job hunt at 28years where the age requirement is always between 25 to 27years with 5years post NYSC experience.
      Infact, Nigeria we hail thee!

The problem with Nigeria is about creating policies without understanding the meat of the policies.
There are reasons why in the US most people enter uni at 18+, it's not because it is enforced, it's just because they have and elementary and high school curriculum that is really robust, so even if you stop at highschool, you can still make your way in life, it is not same here, so why limiting people to obtain what can give them a standing in Nigeria?

What will a child who finishes secondary school awaiting WAEC and NECO be doing at home. Does the government know the exposure of leaving a child to wait for 2 or 3 years before gaining writing WAEC or NECO?

There are so many hurdles awaiting Nigeria children already. I spent three good years writing JAMB to get medicine with massive score of 287 still I didn't get it because of two many number of students wanting to study medicine. I studied another 5 years course and spent two extra years due to strike. I came out already 28. And recruiters said age limit for job application is 25 years. I cried my eyes out. After they will say if you are older than 26 do not apply for a particular job. At the same time they wanted Nigerian children to wait till they get to 18 before they SIT for WAEC. So, if the child failed to pass at one sitting or risk writing it more than once, now what would be the age requirements for job application now ???????????
I said this because, I don't know when they will graduate from the University as we know, it is ASUU and FG that determines when the children graduate from a 4 year program.

There is no age limit for studying in the US as long as you can back your intellect. I literally just took my niece to start undergrad premed last week in South Dakota (with part scholarship) and she's gonna be 18 next May. My last sibling graduated college at 19yrs outside Nigeria. My older brother was in JS 1 at 9yrs. I was a law student at 17yrs eventhough I dropped a class when I switched primary schools. My nephew is 12yrs old has started high school this week here in Austin, TX. My niece and nephew just left Nigeria barely a month ago. Nigerian politicians will always find a way to stiffle progress. No gain saying one has been done with the country.

This policy is not possible! For talented children this policy will kill their morale and ability to do exploits in this country. Unlike other countries that encourages talented kids. I was very intelligent and scored distinction in all subject at my JSVE. But when I was transferred to a Federal government school who doubted me result, they decided to demote me by a class claiming standard. I was really depressed and took me time to encourage myself which I later proof to them as I still emerge as one of the best in my secondary school. If countries like china and America are motivating and encouraging their talented kids, why will Nigeria want to depress their own special and Talented kids? Hence we are heading for a massive economic and technological failure as a country

Shame on our rulers and their gimmicks of distraction! ... BTW, Ayo should not get things twisted by calling the proposed delay a Gap Year (a different thing entirely).
The 6-3-3-4 system or policy should be seen as a guide, not law.

Are even going backward or forward in Nigeria sef!! Some countries consider 21 year old mature applicants. If I must write at 18 yr old, when will I get into uni considering strike and all. By the time I graduate, you will have an age limit on the job and I will not be able to get the job. What the heck is going on!!!! Is this not self-sabotage? Please Please Nigerian leaders be serious. Oga provost please, retention programs are going on within schools abroad. I am very sure the research you mentioned did not focus on age as the only factor. Student support, counseling programs, career advisors, peer and buddy systems are in place to support students. You can not at this looming AI age decide not to harness your workforce on time and effectively please!!!!!! Open your eyes

I'm appalled at the nature of needless arguments our rulers drag the people into for want of ideas. University is for learning and should mature people who go through it and not necessarily vice versa.
As Rufai rightly pointed out people in modern times can learn online and obtain similar qualifications as those who go through the four walls of the university. In the Igbo business settings there are people who go into apprenticeship at early age and get settled at age fourteen to sixteen and they become fully independent businessmen in their capacity.
Being below eighteen years of age does not translate to being immature, retarded or incapacitated. The minister of education should please seek reforms that will enhance education and better standards of process and product of our education system.

Let's wake up today to face the 21st century challenges in ICT, AI, creative thinking and innovation to build Nigeria. Age should not be a parameters for admission to a university study. It should be known that the university is supposed to be a space to learn not only books but life reality and the best way to deal with life, bringing about positive impacts in the society.
Learners tagged 'immature' by the FG because of their age are expected to become matured facing life with optimism in at least the university.
That is part of what the university imbibes in learners.
The inability to deal with life and academic challenges is not due to age but the failure from the ends of educational sectors.
The FG should focus on that and not on the brilliant souls that are striving to rise in an already discouraging country!
