Xander, I wish I could express how much I love your videos. You uploading has become an event in my household. I make a cup of tea, turn off the lights and become completely absorbed. I’ve even managed to get my wife hooked. You’ve quickly become my favourite creator on TH-cam. We don’t have much wilderness in the UK, but you’ve inspired me to get outside more and try new things. I hope you continue to grow!
Careful. You start with a few Xander videos, then you think "Maybe I'll watch a few of his brother Maxim's video's as well..." and suddenly you're getting TH-cam recommendations for two-hour-long Lost Lakes videos, which leads to Explore The Backcountry, Alexis Outdoors... dozens more. All day and all night, you're watching Canadian TH-cam channels. You start ending every sentence with "...eh?" and asking at your local pub if they serve poutine and have Canadian beers available. Pretty soon, you're watching hockey on TV. At that point, there's no hope. It's time to pack up and move to Canada.
You really bring out my days in the military when I was stationed in Alaska. We were taught wilderness survival skills just in case. I’m 62 now so we’re talking the way-back machine. Some things we learned, work smarter not harder. Working up a sweat will make you cold. I learned that wool is not itchy in the cold. But one survival skill was building a snow cave. Inside the snow cave, it will stay at 0 deg C even if the air above is - degrees. You crawl in through a small door at the bottom of the shelter and create a sleeping shelf to keep you above the air coming through the door. A small fire or candle is enough to warm the air inside the shelter. Of course our training was strictly survival enough until you could be rescued. Wow! That memory came out of nowhere. Loved this! Looking forward to another adventure
These videos bring me a sense of peace, especially the ones where its winter and there's snow and it's cold, I watch these too before going to bed to calm down
i just took my grandson camping this week in indiana in the woods. we each had a small tent. built a big fire and had a great time. everyone thought we were crazy, but they are the ones who missed out. i'm 65 and he is 15. we get inspired by you to go out there and have fun. there is no substitute for camping in the woods. thanks
U're absolutely correct. The blankets lost a lot of heat. Need a sleeping bag to contain the heat. Anyone who uses a blanket to keep warm in the snow is a complete idiot......!
I love your videos Xander! I am 1 month clean from drugs and alcohol. You inspire me to go out and enjoy the outdoors. The first few weeks are the most insane but honestly I just keep watching your videos and it just makes me feel better. I live in central Canada so it does get some crazy snow storms out here. But I love you videos and I'm glad I found you. You make me want to do better for myself and my family. Much love ❤️
Congratulations on getting clean and sober!! I've been clean from pills/heroin for a little over 5 years now. Went to college, got a bachelor's degree and just started a new job this week. You can achieve lots of great things in your life, without a mind altering substance in your body. ✌️🎉
There is nothing like the feeling of freedom you experience on a solo trip on a snowy mountain. Waking up and seeing the snow falling as the sun rises behind the horizon is life affirming. Freedom is life
Congrats on being clean! Good job. I have also been clean for 6 months from smoking weed. Really didnt realize all the things I have missed out of while doing it. I totally contribute my success so far to the outdoors and its community. Stay strong brother and keep that head up and move forward. ✌
Watch these videos before I go to sleep and this one was one of the best, the snow scenery and the light against the dark was cool, he is an absolute natural in front of the camera, really enjoy his stuff.
Honestly man, your videos are like a soothing brain bath. They're chill, down to earth and just so human, no cutting if things go wrong. Just you in the wild adventuring for all of us. Keep doing what you do man. And hey, bring a hot water bottle or something next time it looks absolutely freezing in that forest.
This was my first Budnick. Every time I have panic attacks, I watch this channel to calm me down and help me sleep. It gives me perspective on life. Thank you for this, from Brazil, with love. 🇧🇷❤
Xander because of you’ve I’ve finally purchased my first set of camping gear, going with my brother in the woods behind my house. You’re videos are amazing! Editing is spot on! Thankyou

Thanx again Xander!

I get tired of the so called “bush” TH-camrs when they pack in tents, stoves, and a ton of gear and say they’re roughing it lol! This is roughing it! One of my favorite things about your videos Xander, is the way you edit the wood processing. It looks so cool when it's stitched together like that, but that is a lot of editing work I'm sure, so I thought I'd take the time to specifically point that out. Great shelter. Great food. Great vid, as always.
Great adventure Xander. Definitely a bigger wool blanket, double or queen, and 2 of them is the way to go in the Canadian winter. Great find on that hard wood. Nate
Xander... have been so greatly enjoying your vids for the last several months, along with those from your friends Jon and Joe. Your humor, sense of adventure and courage to challenge yourself is exceeded only by your humility. Your vids give joy to many, and certainly me. Sincere thanks from the United States. Andy
I think you'll find the Siberian log fire setup ideal for shelters like this; the heat shoots out in a roughly 120 degree fan, low to the ground and toward the shelter. Meanwhile the opposite side of the fire has no heat, and only a little goes straight upwards. Lasts a long time, burns efficiently and requires very little maintenance. I had a relatively small one going last night, it was a humid 5°F with no shelter and it was great, only woke up around 4am to piss and scoot the toplogs forward. 👍
Love these videos! So darn relaxing as a city dweller. I've seen other people bury pieces of the charcoal into the ground, especially on the backside of where you would sleep. Warms it up a bit to eliminate cold spots.
Great video, this reminds me of childhood. Our dad would make shelters for us to stay warm while he was working as a logger. His version was usually a 20 minute job with a chainsaw. We never did camp out like this but I can't think of a better dinner in this situation than brats and a baked potato!
By the looks of the snow I was out at around the same time as you, I was in shawanaga territory about an hour past Parry sound. I was having the same issue with the little branches for fire but eventually got it going. It was actually my first trip ever in the winter and 2nd trip overall, got into because of your videos. My shelter was ass but I didn't die or freeze! Learned many things though and can't wait for the next time.
I was raised in a "wilds" of southern Poland so civilization was always maximum 10 km away. I know how to dig in the tent and make a bonfire in the snow thanks to my father who is mountain freak. Now 20 years later I'm manager in bank watching your channel wishing I could try same things in Poland but only recently government allowed tarping. Fire out of option but no surprise because too many stupid ppl would start having them all over the place :D
Back again: it takes both experience and vision to see this spot as a shelter. I am pleased it worked for you! We had spruce groves that offered more inviting shelter possibilities with less trimming. Our problem was how to provide a heating and cooking fire safely within the circumference of the tree base. We were young and had yet to learn that a small, warming fire can do a big job in winter, with the proper sleep system.
Hey Bud. Love your videos and this lifestyle. Showed my wife some of your videos, then some Sutherland’s pics. We both agree that we like this side of you best. Keep taking us along on your outings. We’re in our 70’s so the videos keep us entertained. Also, you eat better in the woods than most do at home. 😊
I have to say I am impressed with your axemanship. Love the simple shelter, would be great to see you staying in some more natural shelters one day? Potatoes in the fire are always a win.
Thank you for this last video of the year. My favorite ones are the snow ones and this was the perfect night to watch it. Hope 2023 brings great experiences for you Xander, thanks!
Awesome stuff Xander!! One thing about your fire, if you do this again, think about building a reflective wall out of logs on the backside of your fire to reflect the heat to you. Thanks for posting and as usual, your vids are top notch!
Beautiful evergreen forest! The spots we go to around us are mostly deciduous with only a small percentage of pine for projects like this, so I'm jealous when I see videos with projects like this.
I was out winter camping this week after the big snow storm in Ontario and I had the same issue with the small branches not wanting to burn because they were soaked. Took a lot more work to get the fire going 😃. I also came 20 feet from a tree falling on me from the heavy snow, at least I was recording when it happened. Thanks for the video.
Your making of banok made me think of something. It'd be cool to try various traditional survival foods from around the world while you're camping. I imagine that most of them are similar, like Damper which is just a simple bread that was a staple for australian bushmen, usually eaten with honey if any can be found. I always liked it because we cooked it directly on the coals making it nice and smokey which goes well with honey or jam.
Xander, killing it again! Your baked potato looked absolutely amazing. I also like lots of sour cream and green onions on mine, haha. The snow sure made for some beautiful scenery in the area you stayed. Happy new year too 🎉✌️
There are a couple of things that put your video head and shoulders above most of these other phonies on You tube. 1) You actually talk! WOW! 2) You don't bore us with repetitive tasks 3) You actually built a primitive shelter just large enough to sleep in and small enough to catch some radiant heat from a robust fire. 4) Your dinner menu was simple and looked delicious. So I'm inclined to believe that you actually spent the night (unlike most of these other phonies) in it because you described the comfort level which seemed believable. Nice job. I'll be subscribing and looking forward to more.
my favorite videos to watch are when you bring everything you need...camp in luxury and make 5-star meals! The hearty dinners out there are fun to see.
Happy New Year Xander. I’m from Saskatchewan and I’m still amazed of how you can be out in this kind of weather. I know it’s not that cold, but dude you have a strong lungs. Anyway the video is short but great as usual. Thank you. I’m always watching your videos and Max’s before going bed.
Love every video that you put out! Have you considered trying to get on the show "Alone"? I know it's a little bit different from what you are used to, but I'm sure with some training you would be more than prepared enough to do amazing and even possibly win!
Hey Xander, great video as always. So, I was watching a video of yours from last year, and you talked about how you were trying to dial in your sleep system and that you were still pretty cold at night. It would be cool to know what changes you've made in the mean time and what's made the biggest differences. Hopefully you're sleeping much warmer these days.
I started watching when I caught covid and felt isolated and alone and this helped me so much cooking meals dealing with being alone taking it all in enjoying life I thank u for these vids
Hey xander I just wanted to let you know that Find it very calming to watch your videos while I tie my flies for fishing thanks for the good content.!!!
Xander, enjoyable video as usual. I've seen you build great Long Fires for more heat to cover sleeping areas before. Can you comment on why you chose not to use a Long Fire for warmth with this particular shelter? Or why not build long fires on either side of you so your backside doesn't face the cold side of shelter? Considering your deliberate lack of sleep bedding, one would want to optimize available heat and warmth resources. Happy New Year!
Nice little shelter Xander awesome fire , and didn't the trees look gorgeous with the heavy snow on them you are an inspiration to others to get them outdoors to try something new , something that is good for them like being in Nature. love your videos , hope you have a wonderful 2023 of full of new and exciting adventures
Wonderful video, as always, Xander! So interesting and inspiring! Thank you for sharing your outing with us! All the best in 2023! Looking forward to more great content! ❤
Another great video. Lots of work to get a shelter going for one night. But the beautiful snowy trees made it worth while. Glad you had a good time. Have a safe and happy new year. 🎉
If there's one thing I've learned about you Xander, it's that no matter the length of trip, long or short, you ALWAYS have to eat well haha. And here I am going on a back country trip with freeze dried meals hahaha. The only weird thing I bring on trip with me is baby food haha! It's how I get my fruits and veggies in me. All my friends think it's weird and I'm like "look. If you put pureed fruit on a plate at a restaurant and it has a fancy streak in it, it's the same thing!" hahaha. Happy new year, can't wait to see what you do!
I was asked to watch my 11yr grandson so my daughter could go shopping so i took him into the woods and we made a small camp fire when my daughter found out she wasn't happy with me but my grandson had a wonderful time and because of this I haven't seen him again
I just camped out before skiing to save money. Had a 20°F bag and everything. I was able to sleep at 9° but hell it was not enjoyable. You make Below freezing look easy with just wool. Props
My goodness ... just watching the amount of salt you sprinkled onto that potato raised my blood pressure. As always great content in such a majestic looking place.
I live in south Florida. Everything about this is utterly alien to me. Not just the cold and snow, but the concept of being outdoors all night without being devoured by insects, the idea that fire is your friend, or that it can be lit and actually burn instead of sputtering out from all the moisture in the wood, the act of being able to cut through wood and not have your saw get snagged by uncuttable fibers or gummed up with sap. Your environment in the winter is far more survivable than mine is in the summer. Imagine not even being able to take a cold shower, because there is no cold water.
I'm from a country that does not have winter. I wanted to experience winter camping in other country but worried about frostbite. Maybe I'll just stay in my hot country and watch you guys.
I watch these videos before sleeping to calm down
Legit what i’m about to do
@Oscar Johansson Same. Something about the snow, a rudimentary shelter and a roaring fire sends me off to LA LA land
Same as me

Or why not build long fires on either side of you so your backside doesn't face the cold side of shelter? Considering your deliberate lack of sleep bedding, one would want to optimize available heat and warmth resources. Happy New Year!

Has anyone heard from Mrs.Guilfoyle?
Hello Xander..this is the first time I came across your videos..its amazing how you camped without a tent in the snow..ur ideas r really good.. ⛄❄️👍
Lugar maravilhoso!
Absolutely love this channel! Killin it Xander!!
Another great video. Lots of work to get a shelter going for one night. But the beautiful snowy trees made it worth while. Glad you had a good time. Have a safe and happy new year. 🎉
6:22 wow, this is a beutiful shot!
I have so much anxiety . Can’t imagine being out there in the woods all alone .
This would either cure me or put me over the edge .
Loved the video, it inspires the idea of Mors super shelter, just needing a plastic tarp and an emergency blanket to make it warmer.
I am loving your camera work. Trust me, it is not going unappreciated.
The crackering sound of fired leaves🔥 soothing and relaxing.
Local temperature peaked at 30C/90F today. Happy New Year Xander and thanks so much for your good cheer and solid cooking tips. 🎉🎉🎉
I just camped out before skiing to save money. Had a 20°F bag and everything. I was able to sleep at 9° but hell it was not enjoyable. You make Below freezing look easy with just wool. Props
Very beautiful scenery,Keep connected and greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
I get Peace of mind every time after watching your winter videos
I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to subscribe, you’re a beast Xander!
My goodness ... just watching the amount of salt you sprinkled onto that potato raised my blood pressure. As always great content in such a majestic looking place.
And again thank you for another wonderful video Xander! 😊. Mike
Get lost.
Watched it and I want winter already. Respect from Poland 👊
OMG 😱!!! That looked sooo cold 🥶 I’ll be freezing to death in a place like this 👍🏻👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Happy new year 🎊
The goat returns! This was a really beautiful spot.
Aren’t these trips made for relaxing? All I see is hard work and dedication 😂
The most beautiful camper returns. Messy fishmas!
Haha
Snow + camping = I watch the whole video. Great job as always.
I'm from a country that does not have winter. I wanted to experience winter camping in other country but worried about frostbite. Maybe I'll just stay in my hot country and watch you guys.
One of the best ways to reduce stress…watching a new video from Xander ☺️😊
