Man, a few things: you don't want to tame animals because they are available, but because they have a purpose. They guard the base, they carry your stuff etc. The one behind you in the beginning is not a turtle, it's a Shaleback (normal), as you noticed later on. It would be worth mentioning that 1400 hp is not a ton, but there's a main tradeoff for animals is HP compared to the thralls. Thralls mostly have lower Hp but you can put armor on them, so lower HP+ armor VS higher HP is what you choose between pets and thralls. I'm not sure armor can break on thralls, but if it is, you can surely repair it the same way you repair your armor so it's not really "armor breaks and that's that" :D Animal pens not really "like to be placed" on the ground, they have a large base and an even larger hitbox around them, so they can be harder to place when you have a lot of stuff around like inside your base. I think they are equally difficult to place outside, just like the Maproom, but you can place them to a lot of places, you just need to rotate them around till you find the spot where they don't intersect with other buildings and it is flat enough. They can be placed on foundations just as easily, you just need to be sure that the foundations cover the base entirely, although making enough foundations for a large enough flat surface is a pain in itself, so the "cheap" solution is to place them on the ground. This of course makes them not connected to your base and decay faster if that's a thing on your server, animal pens are the first to be deleted if you go on a holiday. It's worth mentioning, that pets have a chance to become greater version of themselves during the animal pen crafting, but not only by changing the food to cooked. In some cases the cooked food is worse than raw. Different kind of (raw) meat affect the chance of getting a greater version of the pet but you not always need cooked (shadespiced) food, it is enough to changing the basic meat to an exquisite meat (raw) to significantly increase the chance. Chances for getting a greater pet and their favorite food is on the Wiki (at the pet's offspring's page (eg not wolf, but wolf pup's page) The thing you not mentioned regarding the taming pen process that it only takes 1 food when starts taming. The rest of the food will be wasted if you leave it there. (well technically the grown animals will eat it and convert it to dung, but that's a different topic) All pets weight the same amount that is 50 points. but after you tamed one you can use it to carry other cubs (and finished pets before being placed) around. Technically, a shoebill pet can carry 6 elephants :D (no weight restriction). Crocodiles can only hatch from hatchlings (baby animals) not from eggs. The eggs you show in the video are consumables (food) or ingredients for advanced food. You cannot leave them around the world to be hatched or use taming pen or anything to make baby crocodiles. If you throw them out of your inventory they just despawn and you wasted a good meal. I think the hyena "chicks" or "pups" are called cubs. :D the spotted and striped are the only 2 variants. No significant difference besides the appearance, they appear to have the same chance to become "greater' version of themselves depending on the food. Regarding upkeep, I think they made a recent change that they don't take food anymore, but that might be temporary. Regarding placing pets: There's a limit on how long you can "drag them along" as you place them, you just get a message that "cannot place that far" if you go beyond that (~100meters or so) also worth mentioning that following pets (just like thralls) teleport around to make sure they can follow you. Sorry for all the above, I just noticed it's an older guide. I meant this with good intentions.
They really missed a trick not allowing you to ride the bigger shaleback and bigger cats. Would be brilliant being able to ride more than just a horse. I think there are mods out there that at least expand the pets and allow mounts.

It's an amazing game despite all of it's bugs and glitches. I love the combination of RPG and Survival and I really am enjoying finding out about the lore of the game which is also well put together.

It's a very enjoyable game. Loads of bugs but there are always constant updates and content coming out and I love the role playing and combat stile in this game as well as the sense of exploration and discovery that you get from it.
I had 5 different pets in my pen and came back the next day to see they were all gone but there was meat hanging on the hooks. And a crocodile in one pen but wanting to kill me every time. Idk what to do
