  • In this first episode of our new How England Was Made series, presenter Rob Bell explores a significant landmark in England’s manufacturing history - Grime's Graves in Norfolk.
This Neolithic flint mine is evidence of early industry, from production to trade, even though the site itself is very unassuming. Historian Susan Greaney gives Rob a guided tour in this first episode of our four-part series, which looks into some of England’s notable locations from our industrial history.

I had a small moment where I wondered for a second if the man of the hole was digging for flint.. although probably not, but was fun to think about.

The first question that springs up is, Were they volunteers? Did they just dig for a nodule when they needed it, or was it an industrial scale activity? Given that natives of the region can't even be seduced to pick fruit, above ground, nobody would have wanted to freely labour down a hole for the preponderance of the day.

@@MsHazard1 The point was provocatively made and intended to get your response, as it has, but the fact is nevertheless true that food rotted in the field because no "real" Englishmen could be found who would deign to soil their hands.

@@treering8228 Don't buy that. Stonehenge is a completely different motivation. Bearing in mind there was also a (probably child) slave operation going on in the copper mine up the Great Orme.
