And now you find out that the bass player is one of the sweetest women you will find. According to my son that is. Ha!Ha! here's the back story. At 16yo he was studying to become an audio engineer. The college always helps set up all the stages at the Rockhampton music festival. He helped set up Spiderbait's gear at the start of their set. During the set, one of the legs of the floor tom gave way, & Sam dived on stage to hold it up during the song while another student slid him a couple of sandbags to prop up the tom for the rest of the set. During the show, Kram broke a stick. At the end Kram thanked him and gave him the broken stick & the set list that was taped to the kit. Janet also came over & thanked him for his effort. Then planted a big wet kiss on him. Quite an experience for a young kid. He's been a fan ever since.
This is a great example of the fact that where a song came from is less important than how it was used by someone to move people, which is what the all songs are about in the first place. You can guarantee not one person in that crowd was sitting there quietly contemplating the origins of that song 😉
You gotta watch the video clip for this song. Absolutely awesome, Kram the drummer races against a black( in Australia is a Crysler PT cruiser) car in the street. It's fun and they change leads back and forth in it.
You are such a chill dude.. but you didnt stop smiling at this one.. it's insane fun song. Their actual official music vid is equally insane and just nuts. Worth a watch for sure. Cheers for great react!
If there’s anything Australian rock bands do brilliantly, and that’s covers, Spiderbait did Black Betty superbly. The Angels did a great cover of the Animals classic “we’ve got to get out of this place”, and Rose Tattoo did a great cover of Steppenwolfs, Born to Be Wild.
I seen a documentary on a PBS when I was a youngster. This was actually call and reply song that Black Chain Gang members would sing. There was actually a recording of it. You could probably find with some Google search such. I remember Ram Jam doing it so I found 30's prison group a blast. This was incredible, music is just cool.
Ram Jam sing the original , this is a cover. Great Aussie Pub/Festival band...I wonder what they are up to these days ? The film clip is cool as well, but this is wild...I love our festivals LOL
I love this live, but its much much clearer, sharp and crisp on the Studio Release, and if you are watching the Video Clip then the Original is best, dont bother with the Official video. It is anything but and has been messed with and dubbed over with some movie clips that it was used in.
You need to watch (and react) to RAM JAM. Then do the Spiderbait video of Black Betty (awesome vid) and then compare - this vis is brilliannt but until you compare the original to the pretender, we cant decide
Thanks Sal. This is a great cover as I wouldn't know the difference (without watching Ram Jam's version yet). I'm sure I'll be able to hear the differences after I hear it.

For a song that's been around for 100 years this has to be the best version
100 years LOL that got me 😂

That drummer is an absolute star, wow, wish I'd been there - amazing performance! 👍
Kram is a national hero!
Ram Jam had the hit you’re probably thinking of, but I think Spiderbait’s cover is better 😉
Lead Belly probably first recorded version
It’s originally by Trad.
There’s an old version by Leadbelly, and it was covered by Ram Jam in the 70s.

The drummer/lead singer played drums for The Wrights performance of Evie 1, 2 & 3, for your reference.
Wow, didn't know that. Awesome fact to share with us. Thank you
Ahhhh. That's why this performance was suggested. Awesome!

i love the film clip to this song as well with the black hotrod !!!
Music video is even more badass. You Kram there, playing his kit and singing in the back of a speeding ute (that's a pickup truck to you).
The original version was in the 1930s i believe. Covered by Ram Jam in 70s which is the best known version.
Yep Leadbelly

Many people got to know this band and the cover due to Need For Speed Underground 2 game.
Ram Jam film clip they all look baked.

Ram Jam sing the original , this is a cover.

Ram Jam 's version is a cover too. It's originally a really old blues song.
@@micko11154 ahh there ya go, was unaware of that. Thanks for letting me know 🙂

Lead Belly@@micko11154
any band, the drummer is the most intelligent member in the band
Its a cover, but a lot heavier and even better imo!

Lead Belly in the 1930s may be the original but he borrowed from everyone
Kram rocks
Best ever version
Definitely better than the original
Ram Jam covered this but is originally by Leadbelly.
Nick Cave did a version closer to Leadbelly
SOil has a pretty great cover of this song.
Cool
Bass player is a lady by the name of Janet English

The original is the band called Ram Jam th-cam.com/video/I_2D8Eo15wE/w-d-xo.html

Ram Jam's version is a cover too. It's an old blues song from early 20th century.
@@micko11154 Yes by Leadbelly.
Loved the original back in the mid 70's during my teen years. This is OK too.
The seventies version was a cover of Leadbelly
Are you related to Keanu?... you seem very Keanu.
Thank you!

@2:38 This is one of their weakest songs. You think this is tough ? Have a look at his double speed off timing on Yeah Oh Yeah.
Old Man Sam gets burnt in my brain for days on end
