The anti shake dying was notorious for the km dslrs, sadly. Anti-shake was so new for such large sensors. I thought the first frame black issue was exclusively a 7D issue. My 5D images imported into Lightroom would have the weirdest green colors that was a real pain to tweak to look unweird. The 7d has THE best layout in a dslr, imho. Dedicated dials for everything that no one does anymore. So damn sexy! I own all three of these cameras in multiple copies and this Minolta fanboy will use them until the wheels fall off. Minolta's swansong.

I love the 7D and all the first Sony Alpha ccd's. Minolta glass is amazing. I'm a little biased because I work at Konica Minolta, it's my 10th year with them.

I found this solution for AS failure on 5D:
    The workaround:
    Leave the Anti Shake off.
Turn the camera power on and let it go to sleep (mine is set to Standby after 1 minute).
Now just wake it up by pressing the shutter halfway, and everything but the Anti Shake works.
It’s not a permanent fix but better than throwing the camera away!

Another great video! Thanks for the memories, and some really nice images there! I really liked the KM DSLRs, although weirdly I didn't like the earliest Sony Alphas until they became bold enough to stamp their own identity rather than what felt like a rebrand. Probably the worst aspect of the KM merger though was the size of the font they needed to use on the viewfinder head - it looked terrible that small! PS - just bagged a Minolta DiMage 5 - which does work - and a 7Hi - which sadly does not.

I had a Maxim 7 at one time, and added a Sony 7d later on. My father left me 2 Minolta Maxim 7000 film cameras With a pro flash and a few lenses and I was off and running. Loved those cameras, each producing amazing results. I later added a Maxim 9 pro level camera. Transitioned to the Konica Minolta 7d and then added the Sony Alpha a7 I believe. Loved the Minolta cameras and the transition to the digital cameras too. Then Sony was the first to embrace the mirrorless system with Electronic view finders, heading in that direction. Time To run away, and I was off to Nikon and never looked back. Funny though, now Nikon has gone mirrorless with EV viewfinders. Plenty of used DSLR Nikons available to keep me going if my current Nikons fail.

Honestly thank you for mentioning about the green yellow cast because its so true ESPECIALLY with Nikon CCDs, and some Lumix P&S. I personally love it, but like it's very much there, and honestly hard to get rid of if you don't like it. On the other hand the Kodak/Olympus sensors I have always felt were a lot more neutral.

Great review. I started with a 35mm Chinon CE4 but soon upgraded to a Canon EOS 600. Had to sell that due to redundancy.
I was then given a Minolta 35mm (forgotten the model). I upgraded to the Dynax 5D which accepted the same lenses.
In 2014, I bought a Sony SLT-A57 which took the same lenses.
Only recently has the 5D failed. The sensor has failed only producing pink/grey images.
Given my A57 has given great service for nearly 10 years, I've bought an A77, ever so cheap now.
Of course both can share the original kit lenses and my primes and zooms from Tamron.
Still deadly sharp and great for video too.

Over the years I have owned a Konica Autoreflex T and a Minolta SRT201. When Sony purchased Konica Minolta I was determined to like their products. But I could never stand the output, so as much as I loved the ergonomics of their cameras in general, I quickly sold the two Sonys that I had. purchased after about six months of owning them.
Now I shoot old Olympus Pen series cameras (EPL-2, EPM-3, EPL-5) and Pentax K-50 and K-5. DSLRs. I also just acquired a K-1 but havent used it enough to know if I like it. The output does look great from the K-1 its just that it doesnt share the same character that my older cameras do.

Maybe I will procure one for myself as a birthday gift... although I have already purchased a Ricoh GR IIIx and a Mamiya M645 Super with 80mm f1.9! 😂 Also, I will take this video as a gift from you since today is my birthday! 🎉

I have the Minolta Dynax 7D with a battery grip. The images blew me away when I first got it, didn't expect the sharpness, colors or the resolution that thing puts out. However, it's quite a big and heavy piece of kit for one thing. Secondly, since I don't have a reader to connect my phone to the old CF-cards the 7D uses I must use my pc to access the images. I try to keep my everyday shooting as simple as possible so even though images sooc is good, the CF-card is unconvenient for me. But the images is really good for the most part. It renders skin tones a little overly saturated sometimes in my experience and that looks amazing, arguably up to personal preference.

    I still have 2 7D (dynax 7D and alpha 7 digital) and 1 5D (dynax 5D).
I concur with you, the metering of these 2 models are tricky, but 7D fits in my hand like a glove, really nice to hold and to shoot with.
Unfortunately, minolta era lenses are not up to modern standard in terms of flare resistance and ghosting.
Still, I love konica minolta, I often think about to sell them, but once I picked it up and shoot something.. I changed my mind.. that feeling still there.. I can't describe it with words

The A100 and all early Sony DSLRs had issues with what Sony called the "Steady Shot" system. I had an A100 years ago, and an A200, then an A330. All great sensors. It's worth mentioning that the Minolta A mount AF lenses were superior to pretty much all the equivalent Sony A mount lenses. I only used Minolta lenses on my old Sony DSLRs!

I’ve been shooting with the 7D since late 2018. I was using mainly a Minolta 800si and I thought I should get a digital body since I had many lenses. I fell in love with it.
The first frame black is a sticky shutter issue, it gets worse is the camera sits for a long time or when cold.
To fix this, before using it go into settings and activate sensor cleaning option that forces the shutter open. Sometimes after it got very cold it wouldn’t open it so a slight tap at the bottom will get it open.
After this you can shoot away

I'm surprised you didn't like the jpegs, I was following your uploads on instagram and I fell in love with the sooc jpegs. • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's funny - when the lighting conditions were right and the metering/wb lined up, they're honestly some of my favorite images ever. The greens in foliage or a sunset/dusk scene in particular could be absolutely magical, like shooting a perfect transparency on slide film. I just struggled to have that consistency with the camera though I will say the 7D was way more reliable for me. It might have just been my 5D body though since it clearly had issues.

Thanks for the video. Got both. Didn't like the Sony A100 at first but then went back again having given it more trial and error in the lightroom. Ended up liking the result I got from using Raw files with Auto+Retro AR2 setting and punching up the contrast two notches. I think it became kind of film like after that. Agree the 7D has great knobs and buttons everything just makes sense it's a very friendly camera to use, but didn't like the shutter sound it seems too sharp and tingy. Overall well worth to own it try it for the price these days. Thanks again for your amazing videos.

Good review - Huge fan of Minolta Glass especially older MD lenses. That is why I own several A mount cameras including the 5D, 7D, A290 and the full frame A900. It has been debated that the color filter array (CFA) degrades over time. This may be the reason your results have a yellow green cast on the Minolta cameras.

I love the 5D - even with the issues, probably because my first camera was my dad's Minolta AL-F. Any camera with the Minolta name and logo on it, and I have take several deep breaths to not end up ordering another dinosaur camera.
I find, that if I can't get the shutter to fire on my 5D, switching to manual focus, lets me continue to shoot. I definitely prefer the RAW files, and I find them easy to edit.
I use a combination of Minolta, Sony, Sigma and Tamron A-mount lenses on my A-mount cameras, because of course I have more than "just" the 5D. My first A-mount camera was an A200 I got from a colleague at the time. I recognized the Minolta DNA immediately even without knowing, that Sony had taken over Minolta's Dynax/Maxxum DSLR camera range. I really liked using the A200, and quickly added some prime lenses - a Sigma 30mm f1.4 and a Sony 20mm f2.8 but I soon felt, I might get more out of the lenses with a newer camera, so I added a very cheap A58. The A58 has served me well every time I have picked it up, but, the 5D is the one I'll keep returning to.
These days I have turned to Micro 4/3 cameras and lenses for the low weight and relatively compact size and my A-mount cameras in general have a lot of competition, but I do cherish them.

They have such a warm, creamy, deep look that, to me, represents the real CCD charm that so much is talked about. Although it doesn't matter the lens, for instance, I shoot a lot with m42 lenses with a A-mount adapter, I particularly love the pictures I get either with the 50mm 2.8 macro lens or the amazing 70-210mm "beercan". I am there with you on that yellow/green CCD cast, Ali. I never liked it that much either. My Sony DSC-T1 and Pentax Optio S7 have particularly nasty Y/G casts, but the video they produce are both particularly interesting in and of themselves - which is why I even kept both cameras despite my distaste for their so-so JPEGs.
Same thing with the DSC-V3, has mild Y/G casts but not as much as other cameras, which I think explains why you liked the V3, but never really loved it. The softness at F8 probably contributed to it as well.

pick a Konica Minolta 5D early this year for cheap as it has the first black frame issue. Think it was about £40ish came with a tamron 150-300mm and the kit lens. Added the 28mm 2.8 and the beer can lens 70-210mm which had stick slow aperture blades but that was easily fixed. The colours are really are nice (my eyes?)and different from what we get now. Looking forward to capturing the autumn colours. Oh using silkypix to tweak the raws, but to my eyes they don't seem to need much maybe blow outs reds now and again. Shame the A100 didn't use that body style, but I feel like Sony was holding off that design for the A900 FF. Oh, and DxO DeepPrimeXD loves and supports A100 files and they make ISO 3200 usable. One of the last film cameras I bought (new as a daily driver) was the Minolta Dynax 7, which was a lovely camera and it could be argued the most technologically advanced film camera made. Hey! Very nice video. I recently picked up a Sony a350 with some kit lens as my first ever "serious" camera. Really loving the photography experience. This camera also seems to have a green cast to them, which I like but maybe not in every situatuion. It also has magenta and green filters presets in the white balance configuration that I want to test out after watching this video.
Would love to hear your opinion on the later CCD Sony cameras!

Not sure if my comment didn’t post or if you’re moderating them 😅 But I’m sorry to hear you’re not loving your 5D the way I love my 7D. Did you try manual glass on it? It totally transforms the experience. Allegedly it has the same sensor as the Epson RD1 and the results with vintage glass are delicious! And it does TTL metering with it.

No censorship here. I have never blocked or deleted a comment. I'm grateful for such a wonderful and empathetic community that doesn't need to resort to trolling. But yes, I have heard this camera possibly shares the same sensor as the RD-1, which I also had. Interestingly I feel the files from each camera post process quite differently but this list of cameras that likely shared the same sensor is kind of amazing (see below; shout out the 6mp club). Also I really really love the way the 7D handles and in the right lighting conditions, it is honestly a hard camera to beat. It's just a bit less versatile than some other cameras of this era that I've shot, but I'm not getting rid of mine :)

@@OneMonthTwoCameras I agree completely! A big part of what I love about it is the sheer number of physical controls. Nearly everything is right there at your fingertips. Overwhelming if you're not used to it, but once you are? Oh boy :D Something I miss when going back to a modern camera.

I miss my old KM 7D mostly for the controls. Images were pretty good too actually. First frame black killed it.
Just got another Sony A100 after my Sony A35 finally died, mostly because the A100 seems to be the only realistically priced A mount body around now, all the prices have gone up, who wants to spend $200 on a basic 10-15 year old Sony or Minolta DSLR/DSLT body? Meanwhile Sony E mount lenses are finally becoming affordable and numerous so the old Minolta and Sony A mount will be forgotten soon if it isn't already for most people. Then A mount bodies and lenses will really come down in price most likely! Haven't played much with the RAW files from the newer A100 yet, jpegs look ok to me but I'm sure you can get more out of the RAW files although I don't use Lightroom-Raw Therapee or Darktable should do it!

im thinking you are using the adobe rgb jpgs - cause those are green but when not using that they seem beautiful to me. i also like shooting at high iso, turning off all noise reduction in camera and LR (especially color noise) and converting to b/w. one og my favorite b/w cameras doing that - beautiful tones and grain. very special sensor.

I had all 3 cameras, the colors that came from the A100 were the best, but the KM 7D had the nicest button layout, too bad that it has a bug in which the first frame that you shoot comes out black, don`t know why, and people seem to just know about it and just shoot 1 picture randomly after switching it on and then continuing as normal. But, for this bug I chose to sell it . Still have my Sony A200 and A57 to use all my Sony & Minolta A lenses which are excellent

i spent my whole vacation on shooting with the Minolta A7 FIlmcamera in Istanbul (7 Rolls) + Beercan 70-210F4 and then later with the Konica-Minolta 5D + Beercan in Zadar, Croatia, then i bought the Konica-Minolta 7D for the ergonomic of the A7, but sadly the package was stolen :(, all in all very lovely Cameras ive really enjoyed shooting with them

I really so wanted to add either th e 5d or the 7d to my collection, unfortunately I just do not want to deal with the known issues of these camera. When I add a camera to my collection, I don't want to worry about it going bad when you just park it in the cabinet for a while. Electronics should go stale when you don't use it for a while. I instead went with A200, A700, A580.

Very nice video! KM always seemed like an interesting company with lots of heritage to both, pre-merger companies. It's nice to see their spirit continue in Sony now, although one might argue it's not quite the same.
PS. What camera did you use to film this video? I love the colors on it and the overall look is very pleasant (although it might also be the ligthing of the scene)

    • @OneMonthTwoCameras
      @OneMonthTwoCameras  ปีที่แล้ว

I have so much affection for a lot of defunct camera companies and KM ranks high among them. And glad you like the look of the video! I am shooting on a very modern camera for video :) It's a Sony FX30 shot in Log and color graded.

To my knowledge only other company that did IBIS in DSLR is Pentax. Which is kind of sad, I'd be quite excited to have DSLR more modern experience and also with IBIS. It's a bummer that Nikon missed that opportunity with D780.

I’ve never used the A100 nor D5/7; I’d like to though, just to see the difference. As I lament the passing of my A350 but I feel a lot less of Minolta heritage remains in the A350. That’s one of the reasons I’d like say ; a 7D just to feel the quality, the weight ; my A350 wasn’t badly built, just a bit plastic feeling. I’d say the 14.1mp that it has doesn't help low light as it’s rubbish and never seemed to like shooting when above ISO 400. And unlike what you said about the Minolta, the Sony noise isn’t great. Owe well.

If you dont say the megapixels of this photos, anyone say that was take by a 24 megapixels camera. Really this is just propaganda of the major manufactures of the cameras. This early digital cameras still today very good. The vast people look their photos in a phone and there is no diference!
