I can relate to your journey, although mine took much longer.
I received a high school education in a Hong Kong British colony and an engineering degree from an American college in 1981. Despite my mother being a Chinese scholar, I was initially indifferent to China and Chinese culture, except for the food. I was strongly influenced by Western engineering and physics and believed that democracy was the solution to all human problems.
Everything changed with Deng Xiaoping. I can't imagine what he saw in China in 1989. He was a wise and brave man. He may be considered a hero of China, akin to a figure borrowed from American comic book culture. He brought order out of chaos through rules, order, and peace, guiding lost souls, particularly those living overseas, back to China.
Our ancestors left treasures everywhere we look today. Through my perspective as a physicist, I saw the order and harmony of the Chinese system. It seemed to have suddenly appeared in my life and in the world. The truth was revealed, and the American system felt immature. I am proud to be Chinese and honored to bear the title "龍的傳人" (descendant of the dragon).

I had a Russian friend tell me that as a young man he was just bored with Russian culture and music - but at around 40 he suddenly started to hear "Russia". Understanding / feeling our history and how it shapes us deveops inner harmony. China in particular has a long story to tell. Enjoy the journey.

When I visited Chang An I really found a connection with the old ways and I was amazed at the cohesiveness of it all. Within the walled city, protected from Invaders. Similar to some places in Italy such as Orvieto and Certaldo. To have a safe place is very important and historically we have all suffered with invasions. Humanity is diverse yet similar in many ways. Hopefully we can all learn that essentially we are one humanity. And music, too helps to connect the threads. Thank you for sharing your performance.

Chinese is one of the oldest civilization of Asia after babylonia ,mesoptamia and indus harrapa.
Lot of ancient building in every provinces in china are well-preserved that you should be proud of it...

Mesopotamian and Indus cultures have long disappeared though. Chinese civilization continued. So, it's harder to put a 'stop' to its development along the way. It can't stay the same over such a long period.

Hello Siming. Thanks for share your perspective of your country and finding harmony with it and the world you have experienced outside of China. Finding oneself is definitely a soul searching journey. I was a refugee from Kampuchea living in the USA. I left Kampuchea in the early 80s and had felt lost living in the US. I visited my homeland in 2002 and had a perplexing experience where I found myself no longer completely a part of that world. I was part of two of worlds and had a bit of identity crisis. After some time reflecting and thinking, I realized that I’m not just Khmer or American, I’m a symbiosis of the two cultures. Realizing that had made me appreciative of other cultures more, as a citizen of the world.

As someone who loves ancient cultures I am happy to see you exploring Chinese culture. I know geopilitically there is much controversy around China, but that does not change the rich history you have in your heritage. I appreciate how you engage openly and honestly on recent political events in China but please do not lose that cultural essence. I remember a time when China and Afrika interacted on this cultural exchange especially with my own people the Venda from South Africa. This is a story that our Elders share in our history. So I have a great interest in that.

True. It´s so sad when you see what happened to the Chinese in Indonesia and how they lost their language and culture. Malaysia instead did a good job there. Singapore on the other hand is quite confusing to me. Most people there are Chinese but they try to get rid of their Chinese languages and substitute it with English. Quite sad.

These aristocratic Chinese gardens that are found in China and duplicated elsewhere do the most amazing job of making a relatively small space seem large. A Chinese garden is almost TARDIS-like in this respect. Also, the qipao is, in my humble opinion, the most feminine and the most beautiful of human garments anywhere in the world. Every woman looks beautiful in a qipao, and I suspect it's far more comfortable than a kimono.

I think it's very normal for children growing up to take their culture for granted, especially in the modern age with so many electronic distractions. It also makes sense to come to appreciate it after gaining life experience and seeing more of the world, which helps contextualize how culture is meaningful, and the one you grew up in is 'yours.'

Beauty is in the eye of the behold who have usually experience new good things. Nature by itself because of its wonder is beautiful and someone placed them all over the world. If you just appreciate only those outside your country, then you have not seen or realise all of them. The appreciation of beauty comes from the inner beauty of oneself. Puzzled?

Chinese Civilization deep and long. East meets west. Music, Dance, Theatre, Art, Literature, Philosophy. Let's compare and contrast. Each should learn the details of the culture of the other. Learning and sharing. So much to talk about. Teach each other the language of Mandarin, English, Cantonese. So many languages, such a richness of expression. So many opportunities to laugh and tell stories; share a big meal with family, friends and strangers. Food is a force for opening up the heart and reaching out in generosity to invite the stranger in. Let all who are hungry, come and eat. East meets west. Chinese visit America. Americans visit China. Let friendship grow and thrive through mutual cooperation and sharing: hearts and minds.

This is what I love about China: originality, beauty and harmony. The Garden reflects those values to a T. There is the dark side of modernisation I hate: derivative aping of the West without regard for the ability to be more of what one is capable, resulting in uninspired, shoddy and low quality work. Chasing after the wrong kind of popularity hasn’t been a good look for China. And I keep asking myself, where is the country that made that beautiful garden?

One of the more disappointing or sad things I noticed on my visits to China was the proliferation and prevalence of western type (public especially) buildings. Often ugly western buildings. You could be in any part of the western world to see such buildings, and yet be in China.. I was disappointed about this and would have wished that the Chinese/govt had retained more aspects of traditional Chinese architecture into many of their new buildings. At least some nod to their history instead of too many ugly western buildings would have been nice.I also prefer the most traditional Han Chinese dress/costume over the tighter less elegant last representative of Chinese clothing./dress.

With modern tech, I think China should spend some money in restoring all the old historical buildings and artifacts etc. to their former glories (like newly built), e.g. that of Tung Huang etc. Dirty looks do not mean they are old. So spend some money, create more jobs, preserve and enhance craftsmanship. Just look at some of the European palaces, so grandly restored.

It's the other way around. Japan got its culture from the Chinese Tang Dynasty, including its language. Most Chinese can read many Japanese Kanji characters, which literally translates as "Han language." As you may know, the Han people are the largest race in the world today. Bonsai comes from the Chinese character "盆栽". Americans learned it from the Japanese. It doesn't mean it came from Japan. That is a Chinese art from way back (2000 years) before Japan made it famous in the West.

China has a lot to be proud of. Gun powder, paper, medical achievements, architectural achievements, astronomical achievements, navigation achievements and projector imaging. Don’t get me started on food and textiles. I just wish the CCP would divert from a police state.

Most parts of China look vastly different from what you show in this video. The more rural and remote parts of China are still very undeveloped and still in very extreme poverty and the people suffer horrible living conditions. As you said, the place you showed us is a tourist attraction. Most Chinese in the few developed cities have no knowledge of the extreme poverty of rural China.

    香港仲有好多年青人英文好差 even 佢係大學生,但又憎恨自己係中國人!這些年青人係90或更後。
    反而被英人真正殖民過的老香港人就支持中國,明白中國。😁
