  • Vadym Prystaiko, Ukraine's ambassador to the UK, told Trevor Phillips on Sunday that he "does believe" Britain's accusation that Vladimir Putin is plotting to install a pro-Moscow leader as head of the government in Ukraine.
He said: "I do believe that. It's not the first time they're trying to do so, historically, and in recent times."
Asked if Ukraine believes Mr Putin will invade, Mr Prystaiko pointed out there has been a Russian presence for almost eight years.

German actions during the past few days regarding Ukraine has been terrible. I understand there are complexities due to history and Germany is unwilling to send weapons (tho I have to point out they’re one of biggest arms sellers in world) but to stand in the way of other countries sending defensive weapons to Ukraine is inexcusable. The naval officer may have fallen on his sword to save his gov’t further embarrassment, but more importantly it illustrates this confusing admiration Germany has always had for Russia no matter how badly they’ve acted. It’s getting really uncomfortable to watch this diplomatic dance they keep doing saying the right thing about western democratic standards but then underhandedly finding ways to do huge business with Russia or trying to push through that EU trade agreement with China last year. Having uk military transport planes sending defensive weapons to Ukraine awkwardly flying up to Denmark’s airspace so they can avoid German embarrassment of having to say they won’t allow overflights was ridiculous this past week and the statements from both gov’t about no request being made was another obvious diplomatic dance. Germany is either in Nato contributing or it’s not, bad enough it doesn’t live up to the 2% pledge but to now insist that other countries can’t help Ukraine defend itself and block serious consequences by its ‘allies’ if Russia attacks, is actively working against Nato. Ukraine is in a terrible position and I feel for them, I’m less concerned about Russia when it comes to being an actual threat to western countries, but what this recent episode has shown is that Nato as an institution has been neglected and if some countries want out or don’t want to contribute then that’s fine, they should leave or perhaps Nato itself has become something that isn’t worth saving and we need to move on and design a new treaty for interested countries. Either way, this has mostly been worrying for Ukraine’s future and separately, it’s been depressing to watch certain countries actions/lack thereof during what is indisputably a crisis for Ukraine.

Any country that relies on another country’s gas to run through theirs so they can remain politically relevant is not serious. Nord Stream 2 is good for business because all businesses try to make their products cheaper and by cutting middle man is good business. Yes I understand that Ukraine needs leverage but relying on natural resources as leverage is not smart. What if there is no gas or not enough. I think Ukraine should see it self as Switzerland so they can enjoy benefits from both sides ie the west and Russia. Currently US and Russia dictating European security. 500 million people and US is negotiating with Russia on your behalf. It’s time EU steps up and be independent from Russia and US politically. Last week France was more like begging to be included in the negotiations whilst EU is likely to suffer more than US should the worse happen.

The United States wouldn’t feel too good about that. So I get where Putin is coming from. But being allowed to be in NATO should be something that Putin should be OK with provided there are no NATO missiles in Ukraine. That may be a negotiation as possible

Russia borders Nato coutries anyway. It's Poland and Lithuania. So your argumentation is pointless Russia loves comlaining about Nato near russian border and at the same time Russia has no problem to cross border of Ukraine or Georgia.

This ambassador is not willing to face reality. In a war with a much stronger Russia, it is better to give it to save the country from utter destruction. Ukraine will fight alone as all those Nato countries which have been provoking Russia will not join in the fight as they know its a foolhardy thing to do.Ukraine should seek a settlement with Russia on its own and not rely on its fair weather western "friends"

Ukraine is not saint. there are minorities living there for example Hungarians on the west border, they were cut from the mother country in 1920 by treaty of trianon. They are oppressed by Ukrainians, they cannot use their language, physical atrocities are common. Probably worse with Russians. Ukraine as well should respect international law and minorities and obey the Minsk agreement. Russia is not saint but do not make this look like Ukraine is the victim here.
