This is my eyelash routine too! One thing I would add is that, depending on the humidity of your climate, your lashes may be too 'damp' to hold a curl. In order for a lash curler to work well, your lashes must be as dry as possible, void of moisture or oils from creams, etc. I suggest giving them a little dusting of setting powder or neutral powder eyeshadow before curling - your mascara will hide any powdery residue. You can also use your heated eyelash curler to 'dry' your lashes before curling. Also that little bit of extra heat helps to hold the curl when I go in with my squeeze-y curler. I agree with Jen - the heated lash curler alone is not quite enough.
I’ve loved your mascara 101 video ever since you uploaded it! Always went back to it whenever I struggled with my own Asian lashes. So happy to see this new updated one! Thanks so much Jen! ❤️ I can’t wait to try out these products and tips!
That video is... I don’t even know how many years old! So I thought this would be a good one to update. 😘 By the way, I feel like there are so many other good mascaras that have come out in the market since then too!
Subscribed to you ten years ago and started my make up journey! Lashes is the ONE thing I still struggle today. I have the same lashes as yours and I can’t tell you how helpful this video is! THANK YOU!!
You’re so welcome!!! Getting the lashes right can totally MAKE a look, especially when you have less makeup on. Try it out and let me know how it went or if you have any other questions!
@@frmheadtotoe 100% With Covid im now full-time remote. Lashes and eyebrows are pretty much the only thing I do now. I love you and I will always pray for you as you and ben raises two cuties together!
Just tried this technique today and it totally worked awesome. I think focusing on each "corner " of the eye was a really good tip. I use that mascara too!
That’s so true! I tried latisse before and it made my lashes look SO nice!! Unfortunately my skin is prone to pigmentation and I started getting dark circles so it doesn’t work for me long term but I miss those luscious lashes 👍
Interesting tips! I'm going to try them. I previously tried a heated lash curler, as well as heating my regular lash curler with a blow dryer and with both methods found that the heat damages the lashes and causes breakage if you use it frequently. My lashes aren't super long but they aren't short. I actually gave up curling my lashes at all and noticed that my lashes grew much longer... Probably because you aren't messing with them as much. Also I found that using waterproof mascara formulas also dry out my lashes.
Oh my godness thank you SO much for an incredible tutorial. I have straight lashes that point into my eyeballs. They are so straight that even lash lift procedures won't hold them for longer than about three weeks. I decided to give the lash lift a rest but I despair about trying to lift them. I am really looking forward to trying the double technique and hopefully having lashes that at least stay up while I have mascara on. Thank you so much.
You were one of my first make up videos I saw on TH-cam. I have been following you ever since. You are amazing! Your tutorials are simple to follow and you always take your time getting to the point. I love how you teach! Thank you for doing such great work.
Also in the short lash club! One thing that really really helps is to blow hot air onto the lash curler! It's a little hot at first, but it makes my lashes stay up for so long!! Would definitely recommend :)
Jen, thanks for another great video. I’ve been watching your channel for years and every WP mascara I’ve tried from your recommendations has been awesome for my short Asian lashes.
You're so welcome and thank you for watching for so many years 🥺 If you haven't tried this one out you DEFINITELY should!!! It's amazing and pretty much won my last mascara showdown video!
I use the “eyelash blow dryer” from Korean brand. Apparently it’s better for your lashes since it lets warm air to blow dry your eyelashes instead of using direct heat. Big fan of your videos!! I struggled with my monolids too
Thank you thank you! I’m not Asian, but my eyelashes are pretty much nonexistent. They are super light, short, and point downward. I do all this great makeup on the rest of my face, but no matter how much mascara I lather on, it doesn’t look like I’ve done anything! Plus, since my lashes grow downward, the massive amount of mascara I put on irritates my eyes and I end up with bloodshot eyes. I’m older than you. A lot of the problem stems from eyelash curlers ripping out my lashes. So I’ve stopped using them. I couldn’t even get the curler to grab all my lashes. 😕 I’m glad to know there a different shapes. Thank you for showing how to use your eyelash curler so it grabs all the lashes!!!!!!
👏Wonderful that you addressed this issue! Bravo! It took me year’s and your manual recommendation is spot on. Another phenomenon product is the Hot Lash eyelash curler. The plug in is better then the battery. Great job!
I’ve had my cheap gold daiso curler for a decade and only had to change the squishy pad once! And believe me it’s is verrrry well loved and works great.
thanks for the tips! i have asian short lashes and never knew i can lift up to curl my lashes! tried shiseido n the normal shu uemura but it just cant catch my lashes! recently discovered the shu uemura S curler and it worked! need to be extremely patient though 😄
I have this combo of curler and mascara. They are amazing on strainght lashes. Been using shisheido curler for years, nothing can replace this product 😍
Love that you mentioned about eyelash heaters. Was wondering if I needed that. But I'll just try your techniques first. Then I do the heater for enhancements 😎
I definitely enjoy having one in my arsenal but it’s not 100% necessary for everyday use! Little tip: take the battery out when it’s not in use so it doesn’t die out as fast!
Thank you for this. I have never had luck with lash curlers. I have one and decided to try again while watching you and I think I had more success than I ever have. I haven’t added mascara as I am about to go to bed. I wear glasses and my lashes stick straight out which touch my glasses very annoying. Now to see how long the curl stays . Also I still have to perfect it as It still seems my lashes want to stick straight out. I don’t have a heated lash curler, do you worry your lashes could burn off with it?
I’ve tried generic replacements and they were just never the same. Lesson learned, I buy the same brand because the pads fit all the way to the edges which is so important for not getting weird crimps and missed lashes!
Wow, 10 yrs ago when i was in highschool i search video for monolids makeup and found her video. She still be same, no different in the video now. And video very useful for whose had monolid 🥰
my short stubborn straight downward pointing lashes are the reason I’m too lazy to do mascara 😂 you manage to work it SO well!! thank you for the tips!
This has even helpful. I am Caucasian with hooded eyes and similar eyelashes to yourself. I have yet to find a curler that works for me, but I am currently trying out the ‘half’ size version. I could never get the hand of a guard (mine looks just like yours) And I just want to tell you what an engaging personality you have. I am glad to have found you, purely by chance, and have subscribed.
I’m Asian and also adopted...I was just given my mom’s curler which I’ve noticed is quite big and round and was always hard to use for me...I will def try an Asian brand
Thank you sooo much for this!! I have insanely long eyelashes but couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get them to curl! They're so straight I can't stand it! I didn't know how to use am eyelash curler properly until you just showed me so I gave up using mine lol. I'm going to give it another shot now! And I just ordered a mascara guard as well! Can't wait to put it all to the test! 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Im asian and have smaller eyes myself, the shiesiedo Ive used for a while but never liked it because its too wide. I got a Chanel curler and its more narrow and its GREAT!
Omg I really needed this tutorial! Gave up lash extensions and have been trying to figure out how to live without them again with my stubborn and straight lashes...
Going lash-extension free after having them for so long is liberating in its own way! My eyes didn’t feel as heavy, didn’t have to worry about water or oil cleansers getting on them, plus it gave my natural lashes a chance to grow stronger and thicker again. I hope the video helps you feel more confident in your natural lash curling skills!
This is so helpful! Thank you for this. I have hooded eyes and have more long and defined lashes than the average asian eyes, but I have a hard time getting my lashes to hold their curl. Can you do a in depth video on how to put on eye liner?
Thank you so much for this video! My lids are monolid and hooded as well and I've p much just given up on doing my eyelashes, but this makes me want to experiment again!
Do you find that asian mascaras hold a curl better than american drugstore mascaras? I feel like with mascaras like L’oreal or Maybelline (waterproof), I have to wait for a new tube to be semi dried out for it to hold my curl.
Hi I've also got short straight eyelashes so will give it a go!! please can you do more videos on fashion as well as beauty, hair too. miss those ! thanks x
okay, just have to say you and your eyes look really exotic and gorgeous before you do anything to them! (and I totally get it that you want a different look sometimes). Just wanted to say I was struck by how lovely you looked before you even did anything to them 🙂;-)
I was using a cheap eyelash curler from the drugstore last week, and literally it went off the pad and chopped off half my lashes on one eye which really hurt since like ripped it out of my eyelid or something. Now I’m terrified of the clamp style lash curlers and I bought a heated one to use by itself. I have short Asian lashes so you can’t see half of it’s missing anyway, but I’ll probably wear falsies now since it looks so sad and bare
Ugh I have been there and I’m so sorry!!! 😫 the good thing is that lash life cycles are pretty short so hopefully they will come back without too much struggle. Thank goodness for easy access to false lashes 😌

As a fellow Asian (Pakistani) with downward eyelashes. Yes I'm a guy btw 🤣 my eyelashes are quite long and cause they droop down I think it ruins my eyes. So thank you for this. I've never used a eyelash curler so 🎉 whoop
A trick i use is to hold a business card on my eyelid when applying mascara. This protects from trying mascara on my eyelid and you don’t need to buy a special guard for it.
My eyelash problem is no matter what waterproof mascara I get, it starts smearing under my eye 😭 i have really folded monolids so you hardly see it after you curl it and the smearing issue... Not sure if anyone else has a solution other than false lashes lol... I pretty much stopped wearing mascara years ago
Even if you don’t have much as far as lower lashes go, you can try using a waterproof liquid eyeliner pen to lightly dot along the line to give it fullness without mascara 👍
Shiseido does have a drugstore version of their curlers, but I usually buy them when I’m in Taiwan visiting my in laws. Maybe check Amazon or yesstyle? Yesstyle probably would have good cheap eyelash curlers that could achieve similar results.
I purchased my Shiseido curler long ago because of you, one of the best purchases ☺️
It’s been a very “buy it for life” kind of purchase! So worth the initial cost
