  • “Annie”
    Vocal by Sinn Sisamouth
    Music/Lyrics by Sisowath Panara Sirivuth
    Arrangement by Hour Lonh
Annie, I sing this song just for you
    Annie
    The night I met you
Was the night that brought me so much pain
All because you had no inclination
Toward this man who was gazing at you.
    Annie
    Watching you dance
    I was struck by dejection
Alone, my heart was in distress
Even if you had no feelings for this man
I’d hoped you would have sympathy.
Hidden in the corner, gazing at you
Seemed like a brilliant star from a great distance
    I yearned for you
Yet you had no sympathy for my aching heart.
    Oh Oh Annie
    Everything else I may forget
    But you? Unforgettable
If you won’t return my affection
    At least respond with sympathy.
Translation is a serious craft. One must capture the voice of an author writing in one language and relate it to another without overtaking the original author’s voice. One has to leave traces that the translation had ever taken place. Translating lyrics doesn't work if one were to translate word by word, or even sentence by sentence. And translating Khmer lyrics to English is even harder as some words just don't translate well. So I took some liberties to get a smoother translation.

Do anyone when this song came out, is it based on Hey Paul by Paul and Paula in 1964?

The song was originally released in either late 1963 or early 1964 by the band Apsara. Sisowath Sirivuth, the band’s lead singer, was credited as the song writer (both music & lyrics). I doubt it’s a cover, or it would have been credited as such.

@@dmkhmer Oh thank you, I was watching That '70s Show and Eric was singing "Donna" and I thought it sound a lot like "Annie" so I went looking around and only found that it was based on "Paula".

I know the song. I don't think they're the same. Though the first few notes do sound quite similar.

To be clearer Annie is a much better song meaningfully than Hey Paula. It is a real heartthrob type !!!! ask Sitha Than.

Yes sound like from Hey Paul. I don't think we can compose our own music.

Really? You don't believe Khmer musicians could write music? Do you know how massive the modern Khmer music repertoire is? Between the end of World War II and April 1975, Khmer musicians produced a large number of songs. Granted, not every single song was excellent, but the vast majority were terrific. Only a small number were covers of foreign tunes.
Back to these two songs: the opening chord may sound similar, but they are not the same tune. Also, the title is "Hey Paula."

    To all Khmer
people listening to our old song, please don't listen them, why ? All our oldies songs are sold to copyright 3rd party foreigner. Not our Khmer people. Don't support them. Most Khmer don't Khmer.
