"Phka Ey Phka Thkol" by Sinn Sisamouth & Ros Sereysothea, ផ្កាអើយផ្កាថ្កុល, Chamrieng Ramvong
Thkol is bullet wood (mimusop elengi).
“Flower! Ah, Thkol Flower!”
(Phka Ey Phka Thkol)
Vocals by Sinn Sisamouth & Ros Sereysothea
Music & Lyrics by Sinn Sisamouth
Arrangement by Mer Bun
I'm amazed that a wrinkled-faced man who resembles a pangolin is afraid to come up and sing. I’m astounded that a pangolin-like man with wrinkles would be scared to get up and sing.
He is just handsome in appearance! He is merely handsome in appearance, but he is scared to sing and yet boasts about his bravery.
Don’t insult me too much; I can withstand even a bomb. Don't insult me too harshly; I can endure even a bomb!
How serious is it to merely sing? How serious would it be to simply sing? I can totally sing. You can't shame me!
Flower! Ah, thkol flower! With understanding, my feeling of love comes spiraling. Flower! Ah, thkol flower! My love feelings spiral as I gain understanding.
He's a real Khmer! He is a true Khmer who deserves to be loved by me or anyone else!
If you bore any affection for me, would you bestow me your scarf, dear? If you have any feelings for me, will you please offer me your scarf, my dear?
Not just my scarf! Not just my scarf; I'm willing to give you anything if it pleases me!
Translation is a serious craft. One must capture the voice of an author writing in one language and relate it to another without overtaking the original author’s voice. One has to leave traces that the translation had ever taken place. Translating lyrics doesn't work if one were to translate word by word, or even sentence by sentence. And translating Khmer lyrics to English is even harder as some words just don't translate well. So I took some liberties to get a smoother translation.

Correction: the last line in the first verse, “This is where I lay down my grand pillow,” is rather “Herein lies my grand pillow.” Let’s review some key words. In the title is samphah (សម្ផស្ស), which means touch, contact, sensation. As in many other cultures, Khmer organizes sensation (samphah) into six categories, and these are smell (ឃានសម្ផស្ស), taste (ជិវ្ហាសម្ផស្ស), touch (កាយសម្ផស្ស), fe...

Ooh I love this song. Thanks for translating bong
Let’s go over some words; in the title is phka thkol, which is bullet wood (mimusops elengi), with phka being the Khmer word for flower. In the first verse is ខ្មូរ (kmoo), which is something that is curled in a spiral, wrinkled. It also means quiet, shy, or timid. Next is ពង្រូល (pong-ruul), which is a pangolin. The last word in the verse is ក្លាហាន (klaahaen), which translates to brave, courageous, boldness, or daring. The second word in the second verse is ដៀល (diel), Khmer for to ridicule, to insult. Next is ធ្ងន់ (thngon), which means heavy. It is also used to refer to something grave or serious.
I think only Sinn Sisamouth can sing this song, whether it is low, high, or long drag. He can do it all.
Hi bong can you do kompeng taeng kloun if you haven’t already?
the better subtitle is 10000 days of missing love
Alai thinking of someone not regreting
អាល័យ is to pine for, to miss. It also means thought, passion or desire. It's also used to refer to rueful feeling as well as dwelling or house.

Thank you for all the translations, DMKhmer. The Khmer language is so descriptive and specific. Certain words only create harmony with certain words. It seems that the Khmer language can describe things that seem unimaginable and also brutally describe the saddest of human actions. I can't read nor write in Khmer. I'm an average Khmer speaker at best. I wish I had learned to read/write in Khmer.

Let's review some terminology, and what a rich one this song has. In the title are phleng maccoriec; phleng (ភ្លេង) is music, whereas maccoriec (មច្ចុរាជ) is Death, with macco being dying, death, and riec, from the Sanskrit raja, is king, royalty, ruler, or reign. The second verse starts with klaeng sraak which is a type of owl whose cry is believed to herald the death of a sick person in Khmer culture. Also in the same verse is cəɲcien (ចិញ្ចៀន), which is Khmer for ring, a space between the circumference of two circles, a ringlike space.
Bong have you translated ខ្លាចប្រពន្ធដូចខ្លា yet? I love the song, but my Khmer is too rusty to understand most of it.
No, not yet.
Wow,never heard this song in my life,it’s actually amazing that Sisamut could sing in French…so talented
He also sung in thai too!
Thank you for the translation! This is a good song. I like both versions. Was this song written for a movie? I’m curious because the lyrics make it seem like it could have been.
Yes. The male version was a soundtrack to a film by the same name.
@@dmkhmer Neat, thanks!
Er ....I try to translate it only to find ត្រយង is not a crane,it is Giant I bis......so.....Can you correct it?
Ibis is also known as សត្វក្ង (sat kngaa), which is how I've always known them. Given that cranes are larger than ibises, I most likely mistook giant ibises for cranes when I searched for pictures of សត្វត្រយ៉ង because they are almost the same. In any case, សត្វត្រយ៉ងយក្ស is giant ibis. And thank you for the correction!
Correction: 0:47 "I'm not asking for love". 1:19 The correct meaning should be: “Hey Miss! How many children do you have.” Note: He playfully asked about that to know if she’s single. The slang for the word ក្រម៉ំ means Virgin (Female), but he was using the normal meaning here which refers to a single young girl who hasn’t beed married before.
There're some mistranslation and some part of translation couldn't capture the sweetest meaning of this song.

I've not heard of this song!
I don't think most Khmer people are aware how massive the Khmer modern music repertoire is. It's not an exaggeration to claim that it rivals American music from the big band era to the present. And it all took place in about thirty years, roughly from the end of World War II to April 1975.
