The biggest roadblock to enlightenment is not knowing what it is. Enlightenment is basically the isolation and amplification of something that is so familiar to a person it takes years just to believe it really can be "THAT". Something that has been with you ever since you were a child and something everyone has. You don't need to clime a mountain or pay anyone anything for it.

The more you try to catch it the faster it goes away😄
Its so simple and its nothing. If you try to think about its already gone.
Its even stoopid to talk about enlightment. It only create mental consept that people adapts and then start chasing.

I fear I would not get it either if it was explained to me in the same way. So here is how I actually figured it out with the help of Alan Watts and Mooji teachings and doing what they recommended. First I came to learn of the etymology of words and what they were really meant to mean. I think in language so I should have an innerstanding of these words to think exactly and clearly. 1st great breakthrough was Alan Watts speaking about the word "Person". It was always meant as "per-son(na)" which from Latin means"thru-sound", referring to the masks with mini megaphones the ancient Greeks wore in their plays. These masks identified the character the actor was to play. Made me understand that my person was just a role I was playing in life and just a mask I was wearing and could change. I realized my person(ality) or `mask`` was formed by my thoughts about experiences I had gone through. I was a blank slate when born and I got imprinted by my parents conditioning, school, language, media and all sorts of propaganda. 2nd great breakthrough was thoughts and mind. Thoughts are just something you think and mind is bundles of thoughts. Thoughts are correct or false and always changing in my bundle of thoughts mind. Thoughts and mind are two words which are really the same thing. So I noticed my thoughts that I kept thinking, formed my beliefs which made my ``mask`` of this ``person`` I was identified as. So I realized further that my thoughts, mind, mask(person) were actually all the same thing. 3rd great breakthrough was that my awareness was actually different than my thoughts, mind, mask(person). I could separate my awareness from this group of thoughts, mind, mask(person). Wooji helped me with this and I could experience it in meditation. Awareness, consciousness is the root, foundation which can stand alone in silence without my --------thoughts, mind, mask(person) part. My pure awareness when meditating with eyes closed is silent and without images being aware of itself and everything, not engaging or focusing on any thought if they are to come. just being in a baby state being aware. This is my true ``I am`` that I was born with before any of the thought, mind, mask(person) bundle came into existence. This is enlightening to know. Now to live in this awakened state of ignoring my thoughts, mind, mask(person). Only soaking in awareness, going deeper in the silence and mystery of this awareness. Hope my sharing helps someone out there.

It is a difficult thing to describe. I was in this situation until a couple of months ago. I was being the seeker. I believe this is what this lady is describing. Yes, it is very frustrating after many years to be still waiting for "Awakening" or "Enlightenment". Helen Hamilton helped me realise that I needed to let go of the seeker and realise that just what I am is the awareness. I wish this lady many blessings and that she has now realised that she is the awareness that she seeks.

What you're saying makes perfect sense and is easy to comprehend by someone who went through "shifts"... But there is another way to address this situation, much simpler, closer to the truth and that easily escapes those "inadequacies of language".
Enlightenment is nothing else but maturity. It's remembering the Light and the Love that we are, throughout our lives. So we are all enlightened to a certain degree, and we can easily get a sense of it simply by going back in time and seeing the shifts that actually happened. For instance, just take moment to remember an irrational fear from childhood (the monster under the bed, the dark, etc...). Today, that fear is no longer there. You've outgrown it, you matured out of it... So there you are : enlightenment is the absence of that fear - the absence of what is not.
Thus the answer to that lady's question is : you are enlightened as much as you can be at this precise moment but you've just never been taught to perceive it the right way.

Without consciousness, time and space do not exist; they appear within

The thing is it will also pass and we will go back to our ordinary life, and we will suffer again, but only this time we have some wisdom in our backpack. So the difference now is that we have an understatement of why we are suffering and we have some tools to help us grow in dhamma.

Thanks for ur replies guys. I think it was not a real awakening. Or at least Not a full awakening. I was doing yoga, suddenly I got an enormous energy burst. It was like a lightning through my head from the right to the left side.. And it felt like a energy ball coming straight at me. My heart was racing and I heard a weird sound. But it was all very vague and for a very short period then i passed out or smthing. After this I had a period for about 2 years, with intensified anxiety and alertness. It felt like everyday a small part of suffering dissapeared. Now everything finally comes back to ease... Most of the unease stored in my belly came up with deep yawning sessions... I know this might sound weird. And to be honest... If someone told me he experienced this shit 2 years back, I never would have believed it. But still I feel some lack sometimes.. Now i wanna give up spirituality completely. Because I wanna get out again.. Have u guys had some simular experience?? And am I missing something??

    Summarising all of rupert’s teachings:
When you ask yourself the question “am i aware”...you refer to an objective-quality less experience of being aware and a thought rises “yes”. If you stay with that experience after the thought (being aware of being aware),awareness gradually ,in time ,loses its limitations and the true nature of awareness will shine as it is .This process is called self abidance.

It;s like gathering all the parts of a car, but never figuring out how to put it together. The parts of a car are not a car. Only when they are assembled do they make a completely new entity that can change your life.

What I realized watching this video was that my entire journey of enlightenment has been motivated by dissatisfaction with illusion. I keep trying to get rid of it, to make it pleasant, blissful, peaceful.
I am beyond pleasure, bliss, and peace - is what I realized also. But it is a frightening experience to let go of that which I’ve kept a tight grip on my entire life.

In Koan study, the teacher only gives you, say, how they are inter-related . . . and you have to come up with the analogy and what it is an analogy about. So, for example, an equivalent Koan for Spira's analogy in this video might be something like: "In a movie, what is it that you both see and don't see at the same time (?)"

I was reading an interesting article about this guy who made a doco about himself meditating every day for a year and he had people looking at his brain etc to see document the effects. He said that he wasn't feeling the love peace and happiness that the media and wellness industry seem to depict as the result of meditation but instead he was becoming what he called "discomfortable" meaning learning to be comfortable with the inescapable suffering of life. He said that what he learnt was that "life sucks don't take it personally"
He says "Put another way, until now, I’ve never known how to suffer. How to sit with physical or emotional pain and know that things will probably be ok. I was never taught how to be in a blue-mood and not force myself to perk up or reach for a temporary mind-numbing distraction. I was never shown how to deal with uncertainty, disappointment, loss, and (shock, horror)... failure. But through my mindfulness training I’m learning to be ok with all this and to notice the ever-changing nature of all that is both bad and good in my life"
"In a recent conversation I had with my teacher, Timothea Goddard, she rightly pointed out that life doesn’t always suck and that good things do, and often do, happen too. She amends the expression to say; “Life sucks (and sings). Everything changes. Don’t take it personally.”

So I don't know anything about the actual person who is the questioner, outside of the 19 minutes in the video, so this is just a guess...
But I notice that every time Spira gives a really excellent explanation, she will answer "Yes, I understand that more and more, but ... " and then say something else that clearly shows that she does NOT understand.
So, her main obstacle is likely her egotism that she "understands more and more" (which she says several times). Thus she is basing he own self-esteem and self-identity on her spiritual knowledge. This keeps her from acknowledging that she does not know anything, despite her years of involvement.
But the necessary second half of "I am not awakened yet" is "I do not know anything". If she did both halves, then when he explained it to her, she could actually listen from a fresh perspective and actually see what he is saying. But she cannot see what he is saying, because she thinks she understands it.
(In Spirituality, one can only take one's self-esteem from being a human being - in other words, from the fact of being alive now. Period. If you get involved in "status competition instinct" - the instinct common to many animal species where one measures one's position relative to others (a "pecking order") - then that will prevent you from practicing spirituality. Thus, if you imagine the person out of the 7 billion who is the lowest in status, then you cannot base any aspect of your self-esteem or self-identity on being above that person.
Any feeling of emotional desperation, because you perceive you are low in status, needs to be examined carefully, calmly and rationally, and then dropped.

After this recognition, the attention continues being compelled towards all thoughts which cause suffering for the purpose of enquiry. The question is, WHY we are in such situation in the first place to begin with? In other words, WHY we are if you will "entrapped" in such illusory state initially? Was this (for the lack of better word) "entrapment" or "illusory state of individuality" an event in itself? What were/are the reasons behind such entrapment? Again, in other words, Why are not we already 'consciously' enlightened anyway? Why do we need to go to such an extents to realize that truth that was always the truth? ...
      -------
As a side note, the absolute reality by definition is ineffable (The One of Plotinus, Neti Neti of Advaita, etc...) hence it cannot be put into language and any attempt to do so is waste of time. So I wonder how can we as human beings (while accepting the ineffability of "THAT" which cannot be named, expressed or eve thought of) be so arrogant to think that we can know/realize/experience THAT without its blessing/permit/love? In other words, WITHOUT absolute Brahman's blessing and love and permit we CANNOT even begin experiencing/recognizing/realizing the truth and CANNOT become enlightened, does not matter how hard we try, period.

kwixotic The problem might be in the story of the Buddha. But such allegories are meant to present a grand idea to less literal thinkers but such may be difficult to explain to the mind of a realist before s/he learns to see beyond the pale of indoctrination and habit.
A grand “Aha” moment might be a better way of explaining it to many Western thinkers.
Maybe the Buddha story should be explained as a fable or presented as an apologue, first. For some, then when the story is studied, it might make more practical as well as spiritual sense.
If one has true peace, more likely will there be the sense of enlightenment. Enlightenment might also be like the sun; not always fully up.
