American Sheriff | Fault Lines

  • In large parts of the US, sheriffs are the only form of law enforcement and do everything from running the jails to patrolling the streets.
Sheriffs and their deputies account for one-quarter of all sworn law enforcement officers in the US.
But unlike police or the FBI who have clear oversight and a chain of command holding them accountable, sheriffs are elected in often highly partisan elections.
Many sheriffs don't have term limits and once they are elected, there are very few checks on their power. They can only be removed when the public votes against them.
"They have this huge amount of autonomy, huge amount of independence, huge amount of authority. They make decisions that really dramatically affect people's lives, including life and death questions. That always breeds problems when you have a lot of authority and not a lot of accountability," says Mirya Holman, professor of political science at Tulane University.
Sheriff Thomas Hodgson is the longest serving sheriff in Massachusetts and is known for his tough-on-crime approach. But in recent years he has made news for the high suicide rate in his jails.
"Jail should never be a country club. And anyone who has spent time at our facilities will tell you that they are the furthest thing from a country club. And we know our approach is working," says Hodgson.
Fault Lines travelled to two very different places, Bristol County, Massachusetts and New Iberia Louisiana, to investigate what can happen when the power of a sheriff goes unchecked.

Stats actually show that the more a facility is like a "country club" (humane) the better. I think Iceland and Norway have some of the lowest recidivism rates and their prison is like home. I don't know what else will get our govt. to realize they're not doing the whole "criminal justice" thing right.

Conservatives relish seeing people who "deserve it" suffer. My favorite way to make this point is when it comes to mass shootings.... Conservatives would much rather see a mass shooter taken down in a hail of gun fire than to see a person with mental illness get treatment and never become a mass shooter and maybe even succeed in society.
Want to see a conservative really go nuts? Point out how its cheaper to target people who likely might lean towards criminal behavior and offer them job training and life coaching rather than have them end up in prison. They will lose their f'ing minds over shiat like that. Even when there is data showing how much better that approach is for a society. It’s a sickness really. This obsession with punishment. Every act of compassion toward someone who has committed a crime, who has issues is seen as weakness. And the cycle repeats constantly.

Conservatives HATE science. You have two kind of people in jail: People with a mental illness or brain defect. And people with a bad past. You don't solve either of them with punishment. In Norway they understand this. They don't follow their faithfull feeling and emotion by thinking punishment helps. They follow clear science which demonstrates facts. That's why Norway has the lowest return rate to jail. And the most succesfull returns.

But not that way. Our town has more violence than ever before. I’ve been hearing gun shots a lot. That used to never occur. Well since they brought the city police back in, the gun shots kind of went down a good bit. I’m almost sure that all the citizens here would say we have a great little town. But like I said. Every country has horrible prisons. In other countries prisons you have to pay for food and water. In other countries the prisoners control inside the prison, they have guns! If you were in prison in any other country, you'd be praying to get transferred to the US.

(1:40 in jail should never be a country club ) no it shouldn’t and it’s not but the punishment shouldn’t be treated like a animal that’s messing up there brain, it should be you can stay In a cell if you don’t wanna participate in classes. If you wanna leave the cell and participate come on out we will treat you like a person and your punishment is you not being able to see you family.

If you don't believe there are racial undertones in basically every facet of society, at least the U.S. society, just all a racist. You must have just been born yesterday I'd you're ignorant of that fact. Even if it's just a small percentage in some areas, it still exists.

Making money the weird way. I don’t believe in him. This man needs to be put in a cell. Is he really as bad as the video? This place seems dark. This seems like torture. I think that people want this for me. Because of fear. Or irrelevance. Or I feel bad for the man with the bipolar disorder because I can see his sadness by looking at his face. Help these people.
