@Madan, There is also a temple (Dharmapuri Kottai Kovil) with Hanging Pillars in Dharmapuri, Tamilnadu. bult by King Adhiyaman. . . The reason for such pillars is : during any natural disasters mostly people gather in the temples, in such stages if the existing pillars failed (Like due to Earth quake) these hanging pillars will drop and can hold the roof for few more hours till the people can move out of it . . .. marvelous Engineering Right!!!!!!!!!!!

I really believe in Indian Vastu Shastra. It's not actually religion related but actual pure science. And since most of the old temples in India are constructed by the best Vasthu Sastri's it's totally believable that they are constructed in a way that no natural disasters will affect it.
In olden Vastu sastra they even used to have instruments that could read the underground seismic currents.

the hanging column is nothing but the effect of changing land structure .initially it might be planned and constructed as a usual column .after several years the floor might have went down in that particular area and it resulted in hanging column .that's all..just my guess.

Kerala padhmanaban koil has a history:
Once upon a time none of the 5 chambers opened as it said "if the 5th chamber opened the world will be destroyed". And even they got the government order not to open these chambers. But once one among the people convinced the government to open the Chambers to make the mystery unrevealed from the temple. And somehow he succeeded convincing the government and got permission to open the chamber.. the battachari of the temple is scared coz he believed that the world will be destroyed if the 5 chambers opened.. so he prayed to God a week ago that he doesn't want this to happen in his existence.. he don't want to be alive to see the Chambers open and the world destroy.. just like he asked for just the day before they open the 1st chamber the battachari died.. and when they came to know that he died they stopped from opening the mysterious chambers anymore .
Now we got 4 chambers opened and the last one has our lives.!... Who knows what happens next!?

Wanna share what I know, please correct me if I am wrong :- The reason why Kamakhya Temple was built:
When Sati (human incarnation of goddess Sakthi) killed herself, Lord Shivan couldn't leave her , so carried her body along with him. Only if he let her go, she can be reborn as Parvati to join Shivan again. So Lord Vishnu used his Sudharsina Chakram on her body which was cut into 51 pieces and landed all over our country. Each place where it landed is known as a "Shakthi Peedam" and worshiped accordingly. The place where her private part / uterus landed, was built as Kamakhya Temple. I heard that it is one of the temples where women are allowed while having periods.

The 2nd most interesting temple is the one with the floating pillar. The reason for it might be due to the fact that the pillars which are present in the interior of the temple might have been inserted from top because there wouldn't be enough space for the pillars to be erected from a horizontal to vertical position. So, after the first set of pillars were installed, a roof might be construed and the rest of the pillars rolled over the roof( like the tanjore big rock) and inserted from the top. And finally, due to miscalculations, one pillar might not have met the height criteria. Also, the British general wasn't able to pull that down because the failure doesn't occur due to compression of the pillars, but due to the shear stress acting on the roof which eventually exerts a tension stress on the rest of the pillars, thereby collapsing the entire structure. - Anand

actually when i went to thanuskodi temple..it was really a mystery
so i was told that the right side of the ocean is *pen kadal* because of the soft wave
and the left side is *aan kadal* because of the rapid and aggresive waves
i was really shocked and surprised when i went there to see such amazing creation
The sea on one side has soft and subtle waves and the sea on the other side is quite rough and aggressive compared to the left. It's polar opposite in nature. Also people consider it disrespectful to plough the land as ploughing requires deployment of hard tools and equipments to irrigate the land while the soil in rameswaram is revered and venerated and considered special and auspicious as Godesses sita herself has touched it and made a lingam out of it.
Kamakya temple in Assam is one of the shakthi peetas. when Sati was dead, Rudra [ Lord Shiva ] was so angry and devastated that he put her body over his shoulder and was roaming about. Every one was afraid even to go near him , leave alone talk to Him . At the request of Devas and other Gods, Mahavishnu went near him , snatched her body fron Rudra , sliced it into 21 parts and threw the parts
from the sky. Brishta baagh [ buttocks ] was thrown near Kathmandu . All the 21 sakthi peetas were later instituted by Sri Adi Sankara.
