Before 1857 , bengal province comprising soldiers from Eastern UP, BIHAR and WB constituted majority of British Indian Army...
But during the sepoy mutiny of 1857 they were the epicenters of the war.BENGAL REGIMENT constituted 90% of the rebellion soldiers..
    Famous Mangal pandey
The non participants regiments like pathan, sikhs, jats were called by the britishers to fight against the rebel soldiers..
Thus After the war Britishers didn't recruited them for army because of their major role in mutiny...
Marathas were also neglected because the leaders of 1857 mutiny like tanatiya tope, nana saheb, laxmibai were from maratha...
Britishers categorised them into martial and non martial not because of the sedientary lifestyle but because of the 1857 rebellion by Bengal province sepoys..
And moreover we should keep in mind that the britishers whom they categorised under non martial class (eg:- soldiers from bihar, eastern UP,Bengal) after sepoy mutiny of 1857 those were only responsible for British Indian army triumph before 1857 and due to them britishers defeated many kingdoms and seized the powers...

Those Recruited From UP(Awadh) and Bihar were primarily from 2 castes
      1. Rajputs (28.6%)
      2. Brahmans (27.2%)
It was after 1857 mutiny when most of these Men Rebelled against Britishers due to which there recruitment were stopped and they were declassified

Interesting talk. It seems to have a tilt towards Sikhs however, it would have been great to hear about the others in the British Indian Army especially given that Punjabi Muslims were the single largest class composition of the army (greater than 200,000 vs about 100,000 sikhs). So out of a British Indian Army of 1.5 million, 40-45% were Muslim, 30-35% were HIndu and the remaining 10% were Sikh. It would have been nice to hear more about the Muslims and Hindus.

Muslims were 40% of British Indian army because they composed of nearly 40% of Indian population, whereelse Sikhs composed 15-20% of British Indian army while they were barely 1% of total South Asian population.. This is the reason Sikhs and Gurkhas are more often talked about. The forgotten Muslims though are the Afridi and Mahsud who fought quite bravely for the British..

The prominent ethnic groups from modern India considered martial post-1857 were: Dogras, Garhwalis, Gujjars, Gorkhas, Jats, Kumaonis, Pathans, Rajputs, Sikhs, Janjuas, Mahars, Kodavas, Gakhars, Ghumman, Khokhar and Yadavs.
Post 1947, the martial race theory was discarded on paper. The Indian Army now claims to be a secular army, with every Indian having an equal right to serve the nation.

This showcases that the British rule over India was almost entirely voluntary. These fighting classes could have all easily planned and rebelled together against the British. Instead they chose not to, as the internal indifferences (divide and rule) was proven to be the greatest obstacle of Colonial India between different areas.

Not voluntary. The British were quickly disbanding the armies of all kings and kingdoms they conquered. They used to shut down every manufacturing capacity and units. Cease the entire wealth and estate of kings so that they could never raise armies again. They were made extremely poor and so a lot of Kshatriyas became unemployed. To run livelihood they took to British police and other armed services. Or others took work like farming etc which the British used to denigrate many kshatriya clans as lowly.

Since when do people of a religion belong to the same Race? Which race do Hindus, Muslims and Christians belong to then...Non-Martial Races? ROFL
British used to have a Jat Regiment where Jats from all 3 religions (Muslim, SIkh & Hindu) were recruited by the British Army. Then to sow the seeds of religious divisions in Punjab they started building regiments based on religion.
The vast majority of the sikhs in this regiment however were still from the Jat community.
So, the martial race is Jat NOT Sikhs (which is a religion not a race)
And the guy lecturing is obviously not a Jat but is eager to take credit for the achievements of Jats under the disguise of his religion.
    Very deceptive and dishonest.

  • @dharmvirsingh4031
    @dharmvirsingh4031 7 ปีที่แล้ว +57

Self praised. This guy might have gone through the Sikh history. The rebellion Jat,s around Delhi weakened the Mughal empire and due to which many powers benefited including Sikh's. Thirty years ago when the Sikhs struggling with Moghul,s the Jat,s established Bharat Pur kingdom by fighting with not only one front moghul but other front were Rajput s too. Apart from this other Jat kingdom Gohad/Dhaulpur was also existing who invaded Gwalior not only one but three times under the leadership of great King Bhim Singh Rana and Chattar Singh Rana. The guy is highly biased. Apart from this Jat,s played an important and vital role role in Indian and entire Muslim history. But this guy not a single time of Jat,s though himself is a Jat Sikh. During WWI 6th Jat LI/1st Jat awarded with Royal title. My grandfather was part of that regiment in which 80% of soldier were wrestlers. My grandfather told very interesting story that while fighting with German's the entire regiment decided that after beynoting instead of lay down the enemy on earth every Jat soldier will raise the German soldier towards the sky on the beynot. The Christmas festival came in between the ongoing war. On the Christmas Eve one day ceasefire was declared. The gifts were exchanged between British and German's. During the exchange of gifts the Germans made a mercy request cum complaint that we both sides are white and you people allowing these India to give us a very humiliating death. On returns the British officer shared the complaint of the Germans and hails the bravery of his Jat troops.

Funny that the British had to abandon this theory after WWI, when they faced shortages of manpower, they had to recruit men from the so called 'Non' -Martial races. Starting with the tribes/Communities of NE India, where they recruited more than 20,000 men in 1917 -1919 from the tribes whom they deemed as "mere savage warriors who cannot become disciplined soldiers" or because they did not fight nor helped the British during the so called "Sepoy -Mutiny" in 1857. But after 1919 they recruit them by the bulk in the ASSAM RIFLES and other regiments. Then in 1941, when the threat of the Japanese Invasion of North East India was looming, they had to raise the ASSAM REGIMENT from among the locals of the North East again, who then showed them their fighting prowess, by becoming the only regiment in the history of the world to win six battle honours and one theatre honour with three years of its raising. With that, the British had to trash away their "Martial Race" Theory

    • @FilesdocumentsAndreposit-kr3vb
      @FilesdocumentsAndreposit-kr3vb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Not really. The martial race theory remained in force even until the end of British rule. And it is still in force in the minds of racist Indian army officers..

  • @Fortress_mentality
    @Fortress_mentality 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

It's really unfortunate that we have bought into the Martial Race Theory. The speaker himself speaks of how the armies of three presidencies comprised of all the classes. The British were in India for a considerable period before the mutiny of 1857. To simplify the buildup to the mutiny as an unrest among the Brahmin community is wrong.
Several communities served in the British Indian army and this is reflected in the modern day armies of India and Pakistan which have several regiments that trace its roots to the British Indian Army. They all fought for the empire and fought well. Had they not, the British wouldn't have succeeded in India.
The Mutiny was a major event in the history of the empire in India and hence the communities that aided in putting the rebellion down received praise. The British chose the martial race theory as a means to control the region, the men served the British because that's what soldiers do, they serve under the officers who lead them. The Bengal army mutinied due to several factors and not just due to a lack of loyalty.
Furthermore the army of Madras was far removed from the theatre of the mutiny and hence did not participate in the quelling of the rebellion. However they were neither disbanded nor classified as a martial race. The Madras army fought some of the bloodiest battles for the empire prior to 1857. However with the south of India secured by the Company the major battles shifted north and invariably the northern troops i.e the Sikhs , Pathans and Gurkhas ended up doing most of the fighting.
Madras troops (incl all of South India) , Marathas, Mahars , several tribal communities, troops from Hyderabad and Central India, troops from the North East, the Garhwalis, Kumaounis, Rajputs , Jats , Punjabis, Sikhs, Dogras, Gurkhas, Baluchis, Pathans and the men of Kashmir all fought for the Empire either directly or under their respective princely states.
Furthermore the sheer number of auxiliary troops (labourers) that served the empire through all it's campaigns which comprised of all communities including the lowest classes of Indians are unaccounted for.
A little bit of broad research does one a lot of good. Buying into a colonial theory because it suits one's point of view is wrong. We cannot accept the "truth" that the British wanted us to believe, we can do better

India's history is lot more distorted by leaned caste to benefit themselves and expoit all other native people of india and Asia. Of course without any doubt Britishers recorded the true history of india for the first time. It was very difficult for them due to diverse and heterogeneous nature of both geography and society in india. Indian society was already fragmented by so called upper caste into different castes. But Britishers were aware of this in human and exploitative system and therefore they didn't bother consider these local norms, traditions, culture, customs and rule india more systematically. For example they first stop the sati system which later on uppercaste gave credit to rajaram mohan roy an uppercaste.
Britishers were honest in doing infrastructure development india because which see today centuries old many of the monuments, bridges, building, canals, dam, railway routes, roads are still working.
This person should have read on the battle of Bhima koregaon which took place on 1st January 1818. And than he should have decided what dose a martial race means. We all know 300 hundreds but the real history of 500 should also be studied and known by the people.

Nothing to feel too proud of. Except Bhagat there was no other famous sikh revolutionary. MAXIMUM REVOLUTIONARIES OF india that bore arm against British came from the plains of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Bengal. States specifically kept out of the martial races.

After the Mutiny of 1857, the British systematically selected the races that were abided by their instruction, before that, large number of Bengali Muslims, & Kayastha were recruited to the Army, later they were repressed since they knew they would be the prick that will not leave the body so quickly & eventually again they rise back as the first elements of armed struggle for Independence of the Indian subcontinent, so glad we were able to hold a little bit as Bangladesh, otherwise it would be completely forgotten of the role the Bengalis played, daam right were are a Martial Race of our own rights, we dont need the Brits to certify that, our Punjabi Muslim & Pathan Brothers know that from 1971.

Take a look at all the Sikhs who won Victoria crosses in both world wars, every single one has a jatt last name. Btw there was no such thing as "battalions of Mazhabi Sikhs" the Mazhabi are uneducated idiots that were barley even fit for military service. The Mazhabi are from the untouchable caste which is the lowest of the low and becuase of the intense poverty they come from they couldn't make the cut for military service because they were either too malnourished or lacked the necessary common sense. Also these Mazhabi joined Sikhism way after the jatts had established a strong martial tradition amongst Sikhs and now the Mazhabi like to pretend they were warriors. The vast majority of Mazhabi Sikhs converted to Sikhism from Hinduism in the 1950s before that they didn't even exist among Sikhs, they're basically trying to take credit for the success of others on the battlefield.

British disbanded at least 18 (number) Bengal regiments. After Bengali Brahmans and Bengali Muslims jointly ignited the revolt in 1857, British stopped recruiting Bengalis in the army stating that Bengalis are not fit to be soldier because they are indisciplined, insubordinate, cannot take orders etc. One entire Bengal regiment (not all but majority were Bengalis) was executed for taking part in the revolt. Although Aurangzeb had conflict with the guru, after guru had written the famous letter to Aurangzeb, the conflict stopped. Sikhs always had good relations with all other Moguls.

syed ali Hamid There's no such thing as a martial race. It was a lie propagated by the Brits to drive recruitment in large numbers. You will notice that the rebellion of 1857 was started by the shots fired by a Hindu Brahmin named Mangal Pandey and was largely composed of Hindus and Muslim soldiers from what was then called the United Provinces. This led the Brits to recruit largely from areas that didn't rebel.

Is that to say that the Muslims of Hyderabad and the Hindus of Maharashtra and Karnataka, Rajputana are any less brave? Not if you take the larger history of the Indian subcontinent into context. Aurangzeb couldn't conquer the Deccan and spent all of his resources on those campaigns and his army was largely from the united provinces. Raja Dahir couldn't stop the Islamic Invaders in the Sindh. It's all about how each people adapted and fought against others. We should move on from the British classification and seek to forge our own identity

@@afwerkieritrean6548 The word Gujjar comes from the Gurjar Partiharas who were the principal empire in the north west of india, during this time india ( and consequently pakistan) was divided into three large empires. Gurjar Pratiharas in the north west, the Rashtrakutas in the south and deccan and the Palas in the east (bengal) who were locked in eternal conflict like the marathas and the mughals. Of these the former two , the Gurjars and the Rashtrakutas took the fight to the Ummayads in the 7th century and defeated large Arab contingents. Why did they do this? For the same reason Chandragupta defeated seleucus. Time and place and adaptation. The rajouts are descended from the Rashtrakutas in the south of india ( a region that is now not considered "martial" , reason being that the hunters from this region rebelled against the Brits and this led them to be removed from the list).
If you really think about the realistic mixup of the mughal and maratha armies youd see that the martial theory fell flat. The Mughals had large contingents of Mohyal Brahmins punjab and Bumihar brahmins from bengal. They also had a large number of Rajput generals.
The marathas were famous for employing muslim pindaris or irregular troops and had an entire contingent of Arab infantry. When these two empires clashed...it was never a clash of Martial versus non martial or of muslim versus hindu, it was a clash of people of largely the same culture..a civil war before the establishment of countries.
If the martial races were anything to go by, then the martial races of india would have conquered pakistan according to the Indian polity and the pakistani martial races would have conquered the indians according to the pakistan polity. And both of these countries would have been conquered by the Afghan martial races since they are so hardy:) but that isnt based in realism.
The realistic truth on warfare is that, wars are won not by the strength of arms but the wise judgements and quick actions of seasoned generals.
This was the reason why Napoleon was a grand general. Same reason why Aurangzeb was a good strategist. It was also the reason why Baji Rao never lost a battle as a cavalry general bar none. Same reason why the Marathas under Mahadji shinde were able to conquer the northwest's of pakistan and the same reason why Ahmed Shah Abdali was able to defeat Sadashiv Rao in Panipat and finalky..was the same reason the Britishers were such brilliant strategists and administrators.
It has little to do with the soldier and a lot to do with the general. Lions led by donkeys dont make for good armies :).

What qualities constitute people being 'martial' - " To resist to the last to uphold our rights, our dignity and our freedom" Pazhassi Raja(1774-1805), Kozhikode. And happily the denizens of this landmass have accepted this COLONIAL RACIAL BIGOTRY, militarisation of colonial India basis class, caste and economical status-quo! The Martial Race label wasn't just to sweeten and befriend the people but based on physical capabilities. Punjabis were identified by the British as physically strong people that would make good soldiers. People from desert areas possess genes that make them great warriors. Its all genetics.
"The primacy of Punjab in the British Indian army was codified under the “Martial Races” theory. Propagated by the British, this theory held that certain ethnic groups in India were culturally and genetically predisposed to make excellent soldiers. The agricultural-pastoral tribes of Punjab were lauded as the pinnacle of manliness and chivalry, the Muslims and Sikhs praised for their natural affinity for war."

This is actually worse than even mercenaries, who never adorned uniforms of their own oppressors. The colonial brits used the then prevalent economic grounds post the anglo-sikh wars to recruit large Sikh soldiers to assimilate into the British Army. Whilst other parts of India they encountered stiff resistance which eventually took them to even ban these southern martial traditions like kalaripayattu, Kathi Sami, Silambakam are predated in early vedic inscription and does signify the Indic martial heritage, " OF COURSE NOT COL. BRITSH APPROVED". As these martial arts were a clear threat to the Brits. They nor only inflicted these marital forms to resist and but never got recruited by the colonial British army. Let's not forget the early 13th to 15th century of islamic occupation of large parts of north India, it was the Vijayayanagar Kingdom in the south that was fiercefully independent and had much genius military system with a 10 lakh army on foot !

In the spring of 1863 a large force was secretly collected in Gilgit (by Kashmir Ruler). The force assembled consisted of the “Ram Gol Pultun” of the service of the Maharaja, and other Dogra troops, from 2,000 to 3,000 sepoys, chiefly men of Eusufzye, Boonair, Swat and Pathans - in all, from 5,000 to 6,000 men, under the command of General Hooshiara Singh, Jawahir .Singh, Sardar Samad Khan, Kyberi, the Dogra leaders, and Esau Bahadur. They invaded the Yasin (Gilgit-Baltistan). The Yasin villagers who escaped to the hill of Madoori endeavored to make terms with the Dogra leaders. A harrowing tale is told by one George Hayward as to what happened hereafter. They were assured that no harm would be done to them if they would evacuate the fort and lay down their arms. They did so in the simple faith that as sworn to them no injury would be done to them. A part of the Dogra forces, which had gone round the fort, then made their appearance amongst the women and children. The men who had surrendered their arms were outside the fort, and unable to protect their wives and little ones, for whom they would doubtless have shed their blood had not treachery beguiled them of their weapons. The Dogras immediately commenced massacring the women and children. They threw the little ones into the air and cut them in two as they fell. It is said that the pregnant women, after being killed, were ripped open, and their unborn babies were cut to pieces. The women who had been wounded, but were not yet dead, were dragged to one spot and were there burnt to death. In all from 1,200 to 1,400 of the Yasin villagers were massacred by the foulest treachery and cruelty. This happened in Yasin now District Ghazir. Our people speak Brusheski language. Such atrocities happened with all people of Gilgit-Baltistan. Skerdu, Ladakh, Hunza Nager, Chilas and Chitral. First Ranjit Singh subjugated. After subjugating Jammu and Kashmir, Hari Sing expedited the atrocities under the guidance and support of British. Yes such tragedies took place during partition. But partition issue is different because during partition, all sides (Muslims, Hindues and Sikhs) played their part in blood shade. Its worth sharing with you that during partition, a big number of Sikhand Hinduse were in Gilgit-Baltistan. People of Giilgit-Baltistan did not harm any single civilian. They were sent safe and sound. My point was, this Sardar sab in the video proudly glorifying the Ranjit Sing and Hari Sing. Yes we understand, it is like 'Your Villain My Hero' however we are now living in so called 'humanism' era. We have to be conscious while talking bout past.

I cannot give you all the evidence over here. Although, I must state that "massacre" is strong word to use between two Indo forces, I am not here to prove a point. I was just trying to state some facts. The Sikh empire come to bloom at its peek under the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ji, needless to state the greatest victory and perhaps the only Kingdom to defeat the Afghans in Afghanistan was the, Raja Ranjit singh's army other than the Maurayan empire; which was from the modern state of Bihar. The Sikh had some indigenous defeats fighting against the Rajputs of Rajasthan and against the bhumihar Kingdoms of modern day Bihar and Uttarpradesh as well as the Ahoms. Try and read a book "how britain made the modern world" by Niall Ferguson its published by penguins and states one of the reasons as the constant bickering between the Indian kingdoms as one of the reasons why the Europeans were able to set shop in India. Also read a book called the trial and tribulations of the Indian royal Dynasty, which is a historical account of the wars lost and won by the Marathas, Sikh, Dogra, Ahom's Bhumihar and Gurkha Kingdoms of India. Its a good read and is quite informative.Try and read them with an objective prespective.Again I am not trying to prove a point but a lot misconception are there amidst us in relation to the prowess and achievements of our four fathers.Best of Luck!! :)

My Dear Speaker ...you seemed either hesitant or didn't have time to do enough research on the Chamar Regiment. All of Indian castes played a part and maybe as a suggestion a talk on all individual regiments a video should be produced, so its a level playing field. God bless Mother India and all those who took part in all the wars . 🙏
The Chamar Regiment was an infantry regiment formed by the British during World War II. Raised on 1 March 1943, the regiment was initially assigned to the 268th Indian Infantry Brigade, which was part of 43rd Armoured Division in July 1943 and when the division was broken up to form the 44th Armoured Division the Chamar Regiment was included in the new division.[2] During this time the regiment did not take part in any fighting.[citation needed]

    3 military crosses
    1 battle honour
Later, the Chamar Regiment became part of 23rd Indian Infantry Division. In mid-1944, the regiment's 1st Battalion was committed to the Burma Campaign to fight against Imperial Japanese Army in Nagaland.[3] The fighting lasted over three months, during which time the regiment took part in the Battle of Kohima.
During the 2nd world war, the British Indian Empire pitted the Chamar Regiment against the Japanese Imperial army supported by Indian National Army, headed by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Defeat in Singapore in 1942, Many Indian Prisoners of War joined Netaji (INA); the most prominent member from the Chamar Regiment was Captain Mohan Lal Kureel.[4]23 थी। On August 23, 1945, Tokyo Radio reported that Bose was arriving in Saigon on a large bomber plane when his plane crashed near Taihoku (Japanese language: 臺北帝國大學, Taihoku Teikoku Daigaku) airport on August 18. Japanese General Shodei, Pilot and some others were killed on board the plane. Netaji was seriously burnt. He was taken to Taihoku Sainik Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. According to Col. Habibur Rahman, his last rites were performed in Taihoku. In mid-September, their bones were stored and placed in the Rankoji Temple in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. According to a document received from the National Archives of India, Netaji died on August 18, 1945 at 21.00 pm at Sainik Hospital in Taihoku.
In 1946, (Indian Interim Government 1946 ) the regiment denied to fight against subash chandra bose headed Indian national party that led to its disbanding by the British government. The Regiment, with one year of service, received three Military Crosses and three Military Medals and also the regiment was awarded battle honours for service in Battle of Kohima.[5] Since then, many Dalit and non-Dalit leaders like Chandrasekhar Azad Ravan,[6] RJD leader Raghuvansh Prasad Singh,[7] Congress lawmaker Udit Raj,[8] and Rajesh Bagha, the Chairman of Punjab S.C Commission,[9] have suggested that the Chamar Regiment be re-raised.[citation needed]

sikhs too hv castes they take reservation .. he has given soo many wrong perspective 1) other communities had refused to participate..they were up for no cooperation with the british..and 2) prior to british the marathas were the dominant power who ruled 70% of indian subcontinent not the mughals... and after british got defeated by marathas in first anglo maratha war sikhs supported the british in second anglo maratha war which marathas lost.. we hv been betrayed by our own people .3) gurkhas are not mangloid ..they were hindus since ancient times

Not martial race : Maratha who rule150 years on India , who defete Mughals, aura gzeb who 27 year's spend in Deccan
Maratha who saved north Indian from mughal and Afghan and rule Karnataka to attock now in Pakistan , Afghan , rohille, Suja ud daula baloch unite against Maratha but not single north Indian so called martial race help Maratha against Afghan,
Martha after panipat again win India in 10 years and rulef on Delhi and make mughal puppet
Maratha warriers like mahadji sindhia, Yashwantrao Holkar defete Britishers trained army, 1857 leadership held by Maratha nabasaheb Peshwa, tatya tope, Rani laxmibai
Martial race Sikh : ruled smaller size empire in whole world, ruled 30years on Punjab, not going out of Punjab, bulilt smallest empire with help British, British help Sikh because Afghan away from India, Sikh bet Yashwantrao Holkar against British, also 1857betryed again Indian and got reward as a martial race

I guess he didn't did any research I come from a tribe of head Hunter's from Meghalaya called the Garo's during the British Raj they were so afraid of us that they wouldn't venture out in the open n my great grandfather was the appointed the title Raja by the British for the work he did in bringing other tribes n other clan's into submission
