  • This video shows you how I have been preparing my wooden artist panels for acrylic painting. It is a process that can be used for oil painting too. I use a lot of Golden products such as GAC 100 and gesso as I love the way they feel and I am confident in the quality of the product. I am not sponsored by Golden at all. If you have any questions please comment below or send me an email at carla@carlagraceart.com I will do my best to answer.

    Carla, I've been watching you for years now and I am in love with your work. Thank you for sharing this! I've only used canvas but I've thought of board. 🤗🤗

    Thank you! Spent ages trying to find a video that included the putty layer so I could find out where in the process to use it and whether the sealant or gesso would be ok to go on top!

    Hello i am a french painter i appreciate the work of carla the paintings are so amazing
    i give you a little tip to have a very very smooth rendering and a touch like oilcloth once the paint is well sanded very finely moisten the canvas slightly over the entire surface and you sand with a paper to sand paints for wet surfaces like car this will give you a creamy surface that you will smooth by making circles you then let dry the result is very impressive it works with wood and with canevas have a test on a piece of wood or canvas i am shure you will be satisfy good work and thanks for carla for her videos

    But I’d love to hear a voice over to give it that more personalized feel. 👨🏼‍🎨

    This is very useful and I realise this video was posted some years ago but I must stress it is not a good idea to sand anything near a small baby!

    Thanks for your tutorials. The one on how to cut a wooden panel brought me here. What do you think of rabbit skin glue and traditional gesso? I know it's a longer preparation, but I was wondering if it was worth the time. Thank you.

    • @carlagraceart
      @carlagraceart  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be honest I have no experience with rabbit skin glue... it’s a very traditional medium, and I believe it really seals the surface. I’m not sure about the archival qualities of it though as it is technically an organic material.

    Your instruction videos are great. Could you seal the panel with shellac rather than GAC100 before applying three coats of Gesso? Thanks.

    • @carlagraceart
      @carlagraceart  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use gloss glazing medium instead of GAC 100, not sure about shellac sorry

    Stupid question, but would using some kind of varnish sealant on the underside and Gac-100 on the sides you intend to paint on be okay or unnecessary? I don't know what moisture/humidty/oil damage to wood is like and don't know much much protection is necessary or overkill.

      @@carlagraceart i was watching all your videos today and I really enjoy it. How thick should be the panels and is it a specific kind of panels or any specific one?
      Thank you for answering my questions 🙂

    • @carlagraceart
      @carlagraceart  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      golnoosh rajian I can only find panels as thin as 5mm but if you can find 3mm that would be better for larger work to keep it lighter. Use hardwood panelling

    Carla, do you aim to sand off any remaining brush marks in the gesso to leave a perfectly smooth surface, or can they be left to provide additional texture?

    • @carlagraceart
      @carlagraceart  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pete Brown either or is fine depending on the finish you prefer as the artist. I like to sand it a little if it is very textured but I’m not too concerned

    For oil painting, do we use the acrylic gesso. Or do we leave this part out?

      @@carlagraceart Thank you so much! Why should MDF be avoided? They make water resistant MDF panels now, perhaps that is better? Sorry for all the questions

    • @carlagraceart
      @carlagraceart  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maudale MDF stands for medium density, over time they are more susceptible to change. Hard wood is more compact in terms of the molecular structure of the wood itself, is less porous and even though all wood changes over time, hard wood shows less change then soft or medium density wood panels. Regardless of how the panel is prepared, the actual make up of the wood in terms of its fibres is different
