Long before Iowa star Caitlin Clark hit her first long-range three or signed her first autograph, Pearl Moore set a scoring standard for women’s basketball that has stood for 45 years.
The soft-spoken woman from South Carolina led her team at Francis Marion to the postseason four years in a row, averaging more than 30 points every season. The 5-foot-7 guard once scored 60 points in a game.
She did it all under the radar in many ways, playing at a tiny school from 1975-79 when the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) oversaw the sport. Her career points total - a staggering 4,061 - still stands as the overall record in women’s hoops and is unlikely to fall this season even if Clark and the Hawkeyes make another deep NCAA Tournament run.

What an incredible achievement by Caitlin Clark! Dropping 35 points and breaking the NCAA scoring record is no small feat. This showcases not just her skill but her dedication and hard work. It's inspiring to see athletes push the boundaries of what's possible, and Clark's performance is a testament to that. Congratulations to her and #6 Iowa for the win against #2 Ohio State. No matter the comparison what a great example of leadership and sportsmanship. I wish her well and compliment the things she has done to bring fans to women's college basketball! Congratulations!
If Pete was watching, he’d be shaking his head just like we are, a few of those 3’s were 6-8’ beyond the line. Girl has range!
Put down the pipe.
Really, have you shot a women’s basketball. You’ re range would be unbelievable too.
Pete would be saying....Hey, we didn't even have 3 pointers back in my day so her record shouldn't count against mine.
When he set the record, 3 pointers didn't exist and the max you could play in college was 3 years(freshmen weren't allowed to play). Pete played the max amount, 3 years and 3 pointers weren't a thing...... CC breaking his record is very misleading and shouldn't be included with past records since the rules have so massively changed. Had Pete been allowed to play 4 years like CC or if his shots would've counted as 3 pointer like CC...He would have a huge lead on her.
@@bennypit4411 that's kind of how most records work.. the sport evolves, and new metrics allow newer generations to possibly thrive in ways the old didn't.. happens in every sport.. but youre typing paragraphs and multiple comments cause some white girl did it lol

But claiming she broke Pete's record shouldn't be allowed. The stats should be broken up into different era's b/c back when Pete broke the record freshmen weren't allowed to play(so he only played 3 seasons which was the max you could play) and the 3 point shot wasn't even a thing. Judging his stats by todays rules she wouldn't even be close to his record NCAA record.
@@bennypit4411 is Pete taking his 50 shots a game in the modern league? Hell no. Pete never made it to a final four, would we still be singing his praises now? Hell no.
What fabulous excitement and validation she has brought to women’s sports. Not even a Hawkeyes fan and I found myself rooting for her all the way
I disagree, the rules had to change for her to do this. Her record should not be included with Petes, it's very misleading. When Pete set the record the max you could play in college was 3 years...CC has played 4. When Pete set the record, 3 pointers didn't even exist....Most of CC points are from 3 pointers.
Even without giving Pete that extra year, but just re-calculate his shots that counted as 2 points that today would be counted as 3....and Pete is by far still the NCAA points leader.
The record books should be divided to show the different eras, she should be the new era points record holder since the massive rules change but it shouldn't count against Petes record from the previous rules.
Just imagine in 20 years they change the rules to every shot was now worth 4 points instead of 2, and a player broke CC's record.... That new record shouldn't count against CCs record and take the top spot from her.

Pistol Pete averaged 38 shots per game.
@@clipcoug1139 And would've averaged FIFTY-SIX (yes 56) ppg if he had a three-[point shot to work with.
I'm here betting you would not be here begrudging , say, the number of shots Steph Curry took if he AVERAGED 56 points per game and turned a football school into a SEC contender almost by himself.
@@GooberJones-yn2iz: Pete would average 57 a game according to a former LSU coach. Smells of bias
No, I wouldn't actually begudge Curry for that, but LSU was horrible in Pete's 1st 2 seasons. LSU finished 2nd his senior season, but nobody in the conference was contending with Kentucky.

Are you on some quest for haters? Who hates on her? She's a great player. A phenomenal player. As for this "record"? Nah. Pistol Pete did it in 3 seasons not 4 and in nearly 50 fewer games. No different than single season NFL records that were set when they played 12 or 14 games instead of 17 now. Or when they 2001 Mariners tied the Cubs for wins in a season. The Cubs did it in 8 fewer games. No one will ever touch Pistol Pete's actual record. Dude averaged over 44 ppg to set the record.

Both really good players. It's crazy how Pete played 47 less games and has more Field Goal attempts.
And that is why she didn't break his record, that record is still standing and it will be for a long time .
Thank you for your comment, i've been looking that information
@alienescolinas she broke the all time points record. It's really not as special as his 44 ppg record that won't be beat probably ever.
@@bracesforme3 In ordenador to break a record it must be done in the same conditions as the record was made, and this is not the case, Peter made 3667 points when 3 points didn't exist and in less games. Pete's record will never be beaten
Clark is obviously a great women's player, but NO ONE will ever touch any of Pistol Pete's records in the manner in which he set them in the circumstances he played under in only 3 seasons. Maravich played prior to the 3-point shot and would have averaged almost 55 ppg had he been credited with the 3-point shots he made from that range. Congrats to Clark for setting a "record", but it is what it is, an asterisk record only.
I’m happy that she broke the record. Don’t get me wrong.
But we’re talking about 2 different eras here and Pete didn’t even have the 3-point shot back then. Plus he got his points in fewer games.
But I digress. Congratulations to CC.
0:47 that's such a pretty swish
She is HER! Man I hope she wins the Championship!
Won't
I don't have a dog in this fight. But I was fortunate enough to have seen both of them play. Pete set his record in three years of play as freshmen were not eligible. Comparing the two is comparing apples and oranges. She did not break the scoring record if you only look at her last 3 years. Like I said, I don't care one way or the other but just saying.
Awesome accomplishment by CC. But can these defenders in the perimeter jump to contest the 3s? Extending their arms ain't doing anything lol.
Congrats to Clark!! She’s just going to keep pushing the record higher.
Just imagine if 3 pointers existed when Pete set the record. If you go back and count his shots that today would be counted as 3 instead of 2 he's by far still the record holder. It's very misreading to claim she beat Petes record. Not to mention when Pete played 3 years was the max(b/c freshmen couldn't play) and CC has played 4.....
Sheesh! Living legend in the making.
"Is this heaven." " No this is Iowa."
this is how you break a record, with an actual win.

Put Some Respect On Caitlin Clark NCAA All Time Scoring Leader
yeah...for 4 year, 3pt line era. yay. Small ball too. yay.
If they went back and upgraded every shot on Pistol Pete’s that was long enough to be a three pointer we would know how this compares. But until then these are two very different records.
Not to mention he was only allowed to play 3 seasons, bc freshmen weren't allowed to play. CC has played 4 seasons.
You can go through every record in every sport and do "If..." all day long.
The NCAA has come out and said that all records are gender specific, so this changes nothing about what Pete did. Apples and Oranges.
@@melroze But you could ask how would Caitlyn fare playing against men and how would Pete have fared playing against women. Both are prolific scores in their own realm, but one shouldn't conflate the realms.
Yes, and if you gave her 600 extra shot attempts (his 44.2 ppg came partly because he had literally 40 shots per game whereas no modern player in a division 1 team will have more than 20-25), even downgrading every 3 to a 2, she beats Pete by 400 points. Records are not qualified that way for a reason.
This will be a moment to remember for a long time
Absolutely a great accomplishment.
Side note as to how good Pistol Pete was, No 3 point shot in his college career. And it took 50 years to break his record, though the 3 point came to all of college in 1986-87 season.
It was this incredible lady that broke Pete’s record, none of the big name NBA players could do it.

It really only counts as far as women's basketball is concerned and everybody knows that though. There's no competition if she was in men's league so get over that crap
@@otisb.driftwood2367 It does not "only" count as far as women's basketball. As I noted above, CC did not break the NCAA men's scoring record since she does not play NCAA men's bb but she definitely broke the NCAA scoring record. She broke the women's record. There isn't a college men's team she'd even make.
She is a great player and she's got the record in terms of raw numbers, but you can't compare her to Maravich. He played in an era where freshmen didn't play, there was no three point line and no shot clock. Even if he'd been allowed to play as a frosh his record would be out of sight. And this is not to knock her, as I said she is a great player. But what he did was otherworldly - 44 points a game for his whole three year career. we should just celebrate them both.
She doesn't get 40 shots a game, she doesn't get a choice about which games she plays in and her coach is not her dad.
@@sixfootbear Slow down. Nobody is trying to belittle either of their achievements. They are both remarkable players in their own rights.
Iowa is # 7 My hope is this win helps puts them at # 6 , 5, or 4 after the conference tournaments. And back to the Portland regionals where I bought spendy tickets for all 4 sessions.
This is what happens with lots of practice and dedication. She has herself to thank. What a great talent she's become.
I feel like the WNBA doesn't come close to College Basketball excitement, fast pace, outstanding plays and a super loud crowd...
Caitlin Clark is one of the greatest college sports phenoms ever. She is single-handedly changing womens college basketball. She is generating more views in a couple of years for Iowa than they likely had in their entire history. My wife already asked if we can go see her play wherever she gets drafted in the WNBA and I had a friend who has no interest in womens college bball ask me where he can see her play.
Wow! two people 😂
She has changed the game, I think it’s so amazing. Clark is by far the most IMPORTANT women’s college player of all time.
Her haters are tripping, bro. Give this young lady credit for giving us pure greatness. With range like that, there's no freakin way her game won't translate VERY well in the league.
Pistol Pete on his era in college did not have the 3 point line and he scored 3,667 in only 83 games! Thats amazing! And averaged over 44 per game.
Love watching Clark play, he's soo good!
She broke the womens record. Pete played without a 3 point line. He was limited to playing just three years because of the red shirt rule that wouldn't allow freshmen to play varsity ball. She's great, but in my opinion they need to put a big asterisk next to her name. I hope she has character enough to agree with me.
Kudos to the NCAA women's all-time scorer. When she does this in men's NCAA then you can say NCAA all time record.
Fantastic player
MAGNETIC technology in women's college basketball
Different era I get it but Pistol did this in 3 seasons and no 3 pt line. Freshman didn’t play, 25 regular season games not 30, so pistol Pete is still the king
It doesn't matter. She beats him on triple-doubles, on FG%, and on FT%, so if everything was equalized, she still has him by about 400 points and has a real shot at Pearl Moore's 4,061.
@@katherineberger6329 Sorry but that's so false lol. Caitlin is amazing but if Pistol Peter had a 3 point line AND played his freshman year he would be wayyy ahead of her.
@@matthewreese3907 I know men are butthurt that a woman now holds the NCAA D1 record for points scored. And on nearly 600 fewer shots attempted than what he accumulated. But that's what it is: It's butthurt.
@@matthewreese3907 If Caitlin took 38 shots and 14 free throws per game, without the three-point line...
And if we only gave her 83 games...
She would score 47.4 points per game, for a total of 3,934.
That is comfortably ahead of the men's record of 3,667.
So yes, she really is that tier of shooter. And pretending she only got where she got because of the three-point line or because of an extra year is self-serving butthurt.
The same argument, reversed, would indicate that Pete Maravich's record was only possible because his dad gave him the ball more often than his teammates. And in fact, when Maravich makes the pros, his PPG plummets from 44.2 to 22.1, which is in the range of excellence but not so far out of range as his college numbers, where he was the only player of excellence on an otherwise weak LSU team.
@@katherineberger6329 Your argument is based on so many unknowns... I don't understand why people can't just be happy for Caitlin while still appreciating what Pistol Pete did. They both set records that are unmatchable. I'm sure that if Pete had a 3 point line his and his team's mindset and gameplan would be completely different. Sane as if Caitlin and her team didn't have a 3 point line. Technically, she beat him so she deserves the title but all I am saying is that it COULD have been a different story if they had the same rules of the game. Maybe not, he might've done worse with these things but i am saying we will never know.
54 years ago, Marovitch only played for three seasons and there was no three point line. So think about how much of a shooting prowess he was too. Pete’s record is much more than the total amount of points he scored, but also in the environment he played in. It was deeply segregated back then so he never played against players from black colleges.
This is what women's basketball needs. You have to make stories out of your players. Give people a reason to watch. The nfl does it the best. Every player is different
Glad for Clark. She certainly deserved a hall-of-fame announcer calling this game!

That was a former LSU coach who said he would be making 13 three-pointers
@@clipcoug1139 And yours is the logical fallacy of "Ad hominem Attack the Source." . You are free to document the same thing that he documented. It's public knowledge. It's just that he was one of the few motivated enough to do it.
Women's career scoring leader. Let's not try to compare the womens game to the mens game. There is NO comparison. "Pistol" Pete Maravich accomplished the Men's career scoring record in only 3 seasons. Freshman were not allowed to play Varsity college basketball. BTW, no 3pt line during his career. Congrats Caitlyn Clark on the Women's career scoring record.
Pete Maravich is still the all time leading College Basketball scorer averaging over 40 points a game for the 3 years he was allowed to play. You can not compare what this young lady has accomplished to his record without the use of a 3 point shooting line Pete did not have back then.
I got goosebumps and almost teared up! BUT, it would have been nice for her to beat the record with a non-free-throw shot. I'm also surprised that the Iowa coach didn't call a timeout after the feat.
When people use that saying “they’re just a pure shooter” they talking about Caitlin Clark, her game is amazing
I think my favorite part is that she's rocking Kobe's to get it done. Kobe the fandom and tribute
Pistol Pete's record stands, 3 years(no Freshman stats + The Pistol was packing the arena & D🏀MINATING! scoring 741 pts. When the Varsity squad took the floor the arena emptied out.), 83 games, no 3 ptrs in Maravich era. PP44, THE 🐐! CC22 rec*rd, 4 years, 104 gms so far, 500+ 3 ptrs. ❤ them both, just saying.
Lame
Congrats on breaking the women’s record.
