They were called America 🇺🇸 because their fathers were in the Air Force overseas, they were all Air Force brats… others in the studio would just refer to them as those Americans. Ventura Highway is great but one of the versions on TH-cam is crappy sound quality 👍 btw, Sir George Martin ( who produced the Beatles music ) also was involved in production of America’s music 🎼
Another rabbit hole has opened beneath your feet. "Ventura Highway" "Sister Golden Hair" "Lonely People" "Mad Dog" ...and that's just the scratching of the surface. Have fun. We'll be right here with you.
It was a great time to grow up. Let's not get it twisted, though. There was a horrible war and lots of protesting going on. Fortunately for me, I was too young to pay much attention to all of that. 💙✌️
Love this group, please do more of them, Sister Golden Hair is fantastic, different lead singer, still the same killer harmonies, Ventura Highway is a must listen
This song is about leaving the city life and heading to the desert. Radio stations banned it because they interpreted it as "Horse With No Name" as Heroine. But they were wrong.
America has an extensive catalogue. Sister Golden Hair, Ventura Highway, Tin Man, Don't Cross The River, and You Can do Magic. Dan Peek left the group in '77 and went on to perform christian music before retiring in the 90s. In 2011, Dan Peek passed away. Other members: Dewey Bunell and Gerry Beckley carried on and still perform as America.
“I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name. It felt good to be out of the rain. In the desert, you can remember your name for there ain’t no one for to give you no pain.”
*America* very similar to the Eagles, during the same timeframe, but never quite as big. Same easy listening, harmonizing vocals and thought provoking lyrics for an overall profound effect. Loved their music. *Sister Golden Hair* next please!
song was transforming to me back in the day. Mercilessly bullied, this song implanted in me the thought of a desert where there ain't no one for to give me no pain, gave me hope I could escape. And I did. Not to the deserts of the SW though but the high country plains where I could be myself. Basically the desert. I even have horses tho they all have names lol. This song saved me
The band was formed by military brats who had parents stationed originally in Los Angeles but all got stationed in Britain so they moved their musical aspirations to the London scene. The band didn't have a name (a "horse with no name"). Yet when playing in clubs in Britain, they were introduced to audiences as "those lads from America" and that's how the horse got it's name. The band has volumes of fantastic music. Some they originally wrote for other artists but also released their own versions. "The Sandman", "Tinman", "Sister Golden Hair Surprise", "Muskrat Love", "Magic" and so many more.
In the desert, you can remember your name 'cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain...... your name yyiurs and yours alone with no ine out there to keep calling you all the time 😮
My favorite by them although all their songs are good. I love how the guitars what you called a shuffled I hear as a galloping ho rse. I have seen them live and they were great.
The members of the band America met in London as teenagers in the late 1960s: Dewey Bunnell: English-born American Dan Peek: American Gerry Beckley: American The three were sons of US Air Force personnel stationed in London. They bonded together as American teenagers in London, and began performing live. Soon after graduating high school, Warner Bros. Records discovered the band and offered them a record deal. They quickly became popular, winning a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1973. The band's name comes from a country they dreamed of from their childhood homes. Their music is known for its close vocal harmonies and acoustic folk rock sound
How do you not know this seminal piece of musical art. The ideal road trip track. No matter what country you are in. Laid back stick the toe down for thousands of kilometres.
When this was first released on the radio in 1971 the local station had a contest for naming the horse...I remember dancing around the house with my one year old son every time this played. It was the era of Marvin Gaye, Rod Mckuen with his hit Sloopy..Another great poet, song writer, solo singer artist.
Okay-will resist the usual urge to say “what do mean you’ve never heard America”! Classic band. Now you have heard them 💪 Mystical 70s music -we pretended we understood the meaning even if we only got the gist. I think you did great on your first listen.
I wish someone with your intelligence would start making music like this again. You are smart enough to do it and it would go over big time. Because we have been living in a music desert for too many years.
OOOHH, the music of my childhood and youth. They have a catalogue of great songs, Ventura Highway, Sister Golden Hair and many more. Elmar from Germany
This is one of their big hits from the 70s, another I like from the 70s is Ventura Highways. From the early 80s, they had a big hit called "You Can Do Magic." Which is a favorite of mine.
This lyric is very good: After two days in the desert sun My skin began to turn red After three days in the desert fun I was looking at a river bed And the story it told of a river that flowed Made me sad to think it was dead Excellent.
America formed in England by three Americans who were military brats. They are definitely one of my all-time favorite bands with their soft rock/yacht rock/pop/easy listening, or however you want to label them. Others have probably already suggested the songs I would have, so I won't repeat them. But I will suggest Michael Martin Murphy with his song "Wildfire".
I only saw one comment that mentioned this. America did the entire soundtrack for The last unicorn. Animated with some big names at the time for the voice overs like Alan Alda etc. check it out ! Anything they do is 🔥 fire !
One of the songs that I clearly remember hearing over and over on the radio when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I'd like to see America go on tour with the bands Europe and Asia.
Iconic song! Note that at the time this song by the band AMERICA had been banned in some cities like Kansas City, due to supposed references to drugs; "horse" being a slang word for heroin. Many have said that the key to interpreting this song is found in the following two lines: "In the desert you can remember your name/'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain". More precisely, what is the group metaphorically referring to by using the word "desert"? Thanks.
You should check out You Can Do Magic. I just did a cover of that song a couple of weeks ago and it's surprised me how popular it's been! He actually says you CAN remember your name. It was inspired by a car ride he took with his parents through the desert when he was young.
This is an absolute classic. I remember this haunting sound back when I was a little kid back in the 70's. It has a spooky sound to me but it never scared me. America has a large catalog throughout the 70's & into the 80's. A couple of my favorites are Ventura Highway & You Can Do Magic. The first is earlier America & the second is later America. When you play Ventura Highway, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't sound familiar. Another great reaction, Steven!
I recall this band, this song and others from decades back however u til your review I never looked into the band, its members or their songs. To think when this song was released Nov ‘71 two of the three members were still teenagers.
I think your pondering about the meaning is great. Whether or not you're "right" (whatever that means), it's great to hear how it hits you. Don't stop your theorizing, it's a lot of fun and makes me think about what the song means to me. My suggestion for next song is Tin Man, because it's a well of opportunities to delve into the meaning. But Ventura Highway is also excellent for that.
It took a whole lot of years before I heard this on a sound system made that lyric clear. I always thought it was “because there ain’t no one to give you no name” so my interpretation is the same as yours.
I'll never forget when this first came out and a lot of people thought it was the latest Neil Young hit ???????????? and if you close your eyes ???????????????? LOL :)
Wow I’m surprised you’ve never heard of them but it’s ok. Now u know! They r AWESOME! Saw them when I was a teenager back in the late 70’s. Check out the lyrics. You’ll get it.
I think you nailed it. But the horse still needs a name cuz he's got call it, talk to it or something. Maybe bc it's a wild horse and it don't need no name either cuz as soon as my man hit the ocean, he set it free. Welcome to what I call, California hippie heaven - America. Ventura Highway is prob why I think of that. Awesome tune. Tin Man, Sister Golden Hair - all big hits!🤘🤘
This song always reminds me of the song Indian Reservation, by The Raiders. I don't know if there's a correlation, or if I just discovered them at the same time, when I was a child. It was about the plight of the Cherokee Indian. Tim McGraw sampled the chorus, in his first hit song, Indian Outlaw.
I really loved all of “America”’s songs, the first 10,000 times I heard them in one day. Lol. Some it seemed like they were the only band on the radio! One hit after another. Over and over. They literally owned the airwaves for a few years there. It’s not their fault they were played so much, - so I still just have to get over them being so overplayed! 🤣
America was big in the 70s - many top 40s. this one was one of there biggest hits, but there were also: Ventura highway Dont cross the River Sister golden Hair I've got their first 2 albums on CD - and 2/3 of both had songs that topped the 100 - I just don't have an eidetic memory to know the titles of the songs on those CDs - but 60 percent of the songs on both had major airplay on the radio back in the 70's (deservidly) Personal fav is "Donkey Jaw" and ................Eye in the sky and the hurricane thats abandon"......(2nd song on album 1 - forget the name of the song, but they talk about drinking beers and a hurricane so its got to be good ;-) have you checked out the other underrated 70's band "Supertramp" of not you should imo. same for "Love" not even know by me until a few years ago and i grew up in the 70's. "Love" who?? exactly. check em out - glad i did - though 40 yrs too late, better late than never though ;-).
BTW there was another band called USA "United States of America" in the 60's also - they had one "hit" - from what i've heard they were a decent band - not as good as America, but worth checking out.

Tin Man -- another banger.
A reminder of a peaceful 70s childhood
It was a great time to grow up. Let's not get it twisted, though. There was a horrible war and lots of protesting going on. Fortunately for me, I was too young to pay much attention to all of that. 💙✌️
@@kierstenridgway4634 Agree and definitely not twisting it, I can’t deny my peaceful childhood though, because it was, whether the norm or not ☮️
Yes! America is a rabbit hole I will happily go down with you!
Love this group, please do more of them, Sister Golden Hair is fantastic, different lead singer, still the same killer harmonies, Ventura Highway is a must listen
Great reaction, two words, “Ventura Highway “.
This song is about leaving the city life and heading to the desert. Radio stations banned it because they interpreted it as "Horse With No Name" as Heroine. But they were wrong.
Ventura Highway was a massive hit.
Thanks so much! A few others have recommended that one! Definitely have to check it out!
America has an extensive catalogue. Sister Golden Hair, Ventura Highway, Tin Man, Don't Cross The River, and You Can do Magic.

I think every single person I knew growing up had America's greatest hits in one form or another what a great LP
America is well known by its beautiful harmonies! ❤
Great band. You should listen to Tin Man or Ventura Highway
“I’ve been through the desert on a horse with no name. It felt good to be out of the rain. In the desert, you can remember your name for there ain’t no one for to give you no pain.”
The lead vocal has strong Neil Young vibes
Sister Golden Hair Ventura Highway
As a 17yr old I remember this being played on the jukebox of every pub we went into. .
Todos los videos de 1000 musicians rockin' 1000 muy buenos
A song that fits perfectly in the timeframe of the 70s . Let’s GO. !!!!!🎉
*America* very similar to the Eagles, during the same timeframe, but never quite as big. Same easy listening, harmonizing vocals and thought provoking lyrics for an overall profound effect. Loved their music. *Sister Golden Hair* next please!

Hi, I'm so sorry you were bullied. But I'm glad you saved yourself and got away from them. Humans can be a horrible species! 👍
This was HUGE when it came out. Loved it the 1st time I heard it. Kind of fits the same feel as Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth.
In the desert, you can remember your name 'cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain...... your name yyiurs and yours alone with no ine out there to keep calling you all the time 😮

Sandman is great , this band were perfect at what they did , they were very young aswell . Love them
America has several iconic hits. A great band that really fits in a lot of genres.
Beautiful poetic song.
The members of the band America met in London as teenagers in the late 1960s:

Sooo many good songs from them, even songs like the sandman , woman tonight, all good

They definitely don’t make them like this anymore! Such an amazing tune! 🔥
One of the biggest bands of the 1970's
Love this band!! Saw them in ‘78!! “Lonely People” is still my favorite!!🤘🔥
A beautiful and heartfelt song.
I still have the 45 record for this song when it was released 🥰

AM radio gold here...can still sing it word for word. Such a vibe...
This is one of their big hits from the 70s, another I like from the 70s is Ventura Highways. From the early 80s, they had a big hit called "You Can Do Magic." Which is a favorite of mine.
They played our high school auditorium in Germany when they were just beginning their careers in the 70s.
Very cool 😎
America is an awesome band! This is one of my absolute favorites! Ventura Highway is also a banger by them.
This song is an earworm. It will be running on repeat in your head at the strangest times.

Haha 😂 Let’s Gooooo!!!
Great band.great reaction
The band America has been around since the 1970’s. This song is a classic.🎸🤘I thought you would like the harmonies.🎸🤘
They really created an atmosphere with this song. Only 2 chords, and the melody is almost all monotonal. VERY clever songwriting, really a tone poem.
I think I've heard this song maybe a hundred thousand times sing it 10,000 times I've never heard the lyrics explained that way pretty good
Thanks so much! Such a great tune! Really enjoyed it! 😁
Fine review as ever Steve, this was their top hit in the U.K., Check out Ventura highway equally good.

Daisy Jane was the homecoming theme song my senior year in high school.

Nice and free in the 60s and 70s

🌸 good morning, steven
Hey there! Hope you’re having a great day! 😁
RIVERSIDE & SANDMAN, same album.
Got to listen to TinMan. Amazing harmonies.
Checkout Ventura Highway and Tin Man. They have quite a large catalogue of great music!
America was big in the 70s - many top 40s.
this one was one of there biggest hits, but there were also:
Ventura highway
Dont cross the River
Sister golden Hair
I've got their first 2 albums on CD - and 2/3 of both had songs that topped the 100 - I just don't have an eidetic memory to know the titles of the songs on those CDs - but 60 percent of the songs on both had major airplay on the radio back in the 70's (deservidly)
Personal fav is "Donkey Jaw" and ................Eye in the sky and the hurricane thats abandon"......(2nd song on album 1 - forget the name of the song, but they talk about drinking beers and a hurricane so its got to be good ;-)
have you checked out the other underrated 70's band "Supertramp" of not you should imo.
