As others have said, The Grimm brothers traveled throughout Europe collecting local folktales. They didn't make them up, they documented them. Also, the vast majority of fairy tales are incredibly gruesome. Disney and other modern sources altered them to be cutesy and family friendly. If you read the original story behind the various Disney movies, you would be horrified.

"I've got some fairy tales you can scar kids with." My favorite kind...
The Three Army Surgeons" (KHM 118, Die drei Feldscherer) is a Brothers Grimm fairy tale about 3 traveling army surgeons who perform surgery on themselves to impress an innkeeper. After removing their own organs, they will put them back in the morning. One cuts off his hand, one cuts out his heart and one removes his own eyes. During the night a girl working at the inn has a visit from her lover, a soldier. She gives him some food from the cupboard that is holding the organs. The cat comes and takes the organs. After seeing the organs gone, she tells the soldier. He goes to the gallows and cuts the correct hand off a thief and brings it to her. He then gets the heart of a pig and eyes of a cat. In the morning the doctors re-attach the missing members using a salve they carry with them. After going on the road again one doctor could not see with his reinstalled eyes and had the others guide him. Another doctor started rooting around in the dirt. When they reached another inn the third doctor found he could not help stealing. After traveling back to the original inn they found the girl had fled seeing their approach. They threatened to burn down the inn unless the innkeeper make reparations. He paid them enough to retire, though they still wanted their original organs back.

There's a story similar to the one about the king marrying his daughter because she fit her mother's clothes written by the Grimm Brothers. That one was about a king who only wanted to marry a woman with golden hair like his late wife, and eventually decides that his own daughter is the only one who fits that description. The daughter however runs away and disguises herself by rubbing coal on her face and wearing a heavy fur coat. She finds work in a different kingdom in the palace kitchen, but each night she loses the disguise, puts on a dress and goes upstairs to the party to dance with the young king. He of course falls in love with her, but doesn't recognise her when she's in disguise.

Also, the Juniper Tree is one of my favourite fairy tales. I love those really messed up ones...

Thanks to the origin of fairy tales module I took at uni last year I can confidently tell you guys that back in the day (from the medieval era up to the late 1800s) fairy tales were mainly aimed for adults. They would tell each other these stories as ways of passing on news or as warnings of any particular danger (animal or human) around - yes, that includes frowning upon father-daughter romantic relationships. The brothers Grimm traveled around Germany collecting these fairy tales and tweaked them a little but they're mostly just recordings because peasants in small villages couldn't read or write; I guess this makes them some sort of historians in a way.
Ps: The tale about the father wanting to marry his daughter is considered to be one of the tales that inspired modern versions of Cinderella. :)

Megan Myra You aren't wrong. It just depends which era. Of course there were tamer tales as to not scare the children and have something to tell them at bedtime haha most of the fancy tales started sprouting in France and helped by a gentleman called Charles Perrault; he mixed the different version of similar tales and made them more child-friendly. They were still mainly aimed at adults even then! In the upper-middle class literary saloons where the highly educated French people would get together to socialise :)

Don't know if anyone knows or have commented this, but most of these stories were adult stories told 'After the children had gone to sleep', scary stories. Many were taken by disney, or simply changed into something more friendly over time.

SSJ32Gohan ive grown up with a catholic background gone to catholic school schools all my life (still at high school right now) which is why my views on religion are different from yours. but the fact i believe religion is still wide spread is due to our ignorance to life after death people refuse to believe that we just rot in the ground and cease to exist that religion has the answers of what happens to us so we find it comforting sort of knowing then not knowing at all i too question life after death it scares me alot but some part of me believes in something i just cant believe in nothing.

A lot of those stories from brothers Grimm were not expressly written by them but more so collected. They traveled all over Europe and the world collecting tall tales from different cultures and documented them.
Grimm brothers original stories are one messed up fairy tales. I've read few of the originals ones and those guys must have been tripping on some mushrooms to make up some of the stuff. :D

I have the book that tells the story of the juniper tree! One christmas my mom gave me the book the brothers grimm fairy tales because she thought they were nice fairy tales but they were actually all horrible stories.

The story I read was the step father asked the son if he wanted an apple and when the kid put his head in the chest to get an apple the step father slammed the chest lid on the kids head and then positioned the kid with an apple and the sister asked for an apple but he wouldn't respond so she slapped him in the face and his head fell off and then the stepfather skinned him and cooked him into a stew
