Swedish and Dutch (as well as German and English) are all part of the same branch of the Indo-European language family: the Germanic languages. While not necessarily mutually intelligible (where speakers of one language can basically understand something spoken in another, which happens to some degree between Danish, Swedish, and and Norwegian), the Germanic languages have similar grammar rules and many of the words in their vocabularies come from the same root words from earlier Germanic languages. Dutch is more linguistically similar to English and Frisian within the Germanic languages; again, they’re not all mutually intelligible, but compare texts and words from the languages to each other, and you see strong similarities. (English also has a lot of influences from the Normans - French people descended from the Norse - and Latin as well, but grammatically much more similar to Dutch and Frisian.)

In the video for the Eurovision performance of “Bra vibrationer” the following year, the Swedish host had to inform the audience in English when introducing the song that “it doesn’t mean what you think it means...it means ‘Good Vibrations’”. True, that title does bring a funny visual when I think of it as an English speaker. One of the many quirks of the Swedish language. Imagine the giggles I got when I saw the word “slut” in Swedish for the first time (from a still from Idol Sweden; their “Golden Ticket” reads “Slutaudition” on it, which I found out meant “final callback”, but reading it in English gives me impressions of the “casting couch” scenario 😣).
