Beautiful! My dad was a bricklayer for nearly 40 years. He was very good, and although I am by no means a bricklayer he did teach me things to look for. And I still look for them to this day. He died in 2020 at the age of 94. I would love to share your videos with him. I have his old plumb rules, (I think you call them spirit levels), and most of his old tools. I won't part with them. This is becoming a lost art it seems.

I haven’t done one for a while now !! Seems like they have done away with this detail on a lot of sites. It’s quicker for us to not do them but they are quite satisfying to build 😀👍

Hi Jon ! You know what…. I don’t really get rained off as there is always something to do. I do blockwork in the rain and brickwork in light rain. If it’s to heavy I put water proofs on and tidy my plots or get lintels ready. Or clean cavity’s. It has been pretty wet but it keeps the dust down so I don’t mind 😀 Defo get some bricks for home !! That’s a quick corble build mate, I’ve not done them in summer, but found them easy enough in winter, seems a lot better in summer on the smooths, I leave my old man to joint them up while I get doing cuts n building the next one, we get an extra £50 quid a corble atm, winter gloves are great for rubbing em clean, great vid mate

Thanks Donna! Well there is a “9 inch “soffit on these houses so we have to project out a full brick ( roughly 9 inch) . On the drawings it shows the corbel starting 4 courses below lintel height which the soffit sits on. That means there are 5 overhangs. 0.225 mm (length of the brick we have to gain) divided by 5. So I’m this case each corbel is 45mm👍 So basically you just need to determine how far you need to project and decide where to start the corbel. Then you can work it out from there. I hope this makes sense lol I’ve done a head cam corbel on a previous vid which prob explains it slightly better 😀👍 thanks for commenting 😊🧱
Well spotted!! If there was more brickwork going onto it, then we would defo use 600mm damp. On this particular house the brickwork stops here. These are eves lintels so the soffit sits directly on to it. (The big corbels are to go either side of the facia and soffit) So I’m this case, there is no damp going on these lintels 😊 Hope that makes sense lol Cheers for viewing and commenting 😀👍
Just a little piece of brick tor. The bricks were that dry I didn’t end up using them. Usually I put them on every course right at the end and it keeps the 2 skins together. As it gets higher and heavier the inside skin can sink or come forward slightly. These little pieces stop that. Well spotted with the cavity. Usually I use the off cut from the first cut ( about 180mm ) for the first brick on the inside skin. Keeps the cavity at full width. Thanks for commenting 👍👍

Yeah that’s it. 👍👍 quite a standard corbel design. When I drive around I see them on many many houses old and new. I think from the ground your eye gets drawn to the projections and not the bond. I think they look pretty smart👍👍😊

Yeah if me, the other bricky and labourer do a corble each in 20 mins we could have done 4 or 5 courses on the gable. Say 250 brick(£125). So about £60 per corbel would cover it👍 our old subby paid us £20 per corbel on top of the measure. That was ok as I can box off in hour. I would be surprised if the subby isnt getting paid extra 👎👎
😂👍 there is roughly 30 brick in the corbel but prob only 8 within the measure. Assuming they treat it as if it’s a house without the detail if that makes sense ! We build them on the same day as installing all the 1st floor lintels and wall plate. ( no money for these either!) So all in all it’s a bit of a bad earning day! I understand we can’t be on gables all the time but I do think it’s not right. Extras should be extra 👍 thanks for your comments ian 👍
Sorry about that. Yeah we have to do it like this as there is a drawing for it. All the other houses on the site are the same and I personally think they look good.👍 the ones that are bonded with a header look good aswell 👌😊
No we just get paid on the measure of brick and block in the plot at the mo. There will be x amount of square meters in all the elevations of brickwork on the plot. 60 bricks per m2 give the total amount of bricks. Then we get x amount per thousand. Some of the bricks in the corbel will fall within the measure but no we don’t get any extra for them which is ridiculous i think. Our old contractor said he was giving us 20£ extra per corbel but I’ve worked out there was no extra money in the plot it was just taken out of the measure to make it look like we were getting paid for corbels. Same for stone heads and cills !! Apparently it’s quite common ! 👎👎

Yeah it’s mad how most sites don’t pay extra for detail. Stone cills corbels etc. When I was on private work the quantity surveyor I used priced for absolutely everything. 👍 We just get paid on the meterage so some of the bricks in the corbel will be within the measure and paid as though they were face bricks. The stone would be paid as though it was bricks as it will be within the square meterage of the plot. The last guy we contracted to paid £20 extra per corbel and £5 per stone cill or head. I agree but a lot of subby only pay for brick and block . (No extras) It’s our choice to go somewhere else where they do pay for things like corbels. THe other way of looking at it is that we can make loads of money on these types of houses because the are very simple. I’m on somewhere now that pays extras and it’s great ! 👍👍
From an architectural stand point it is classed as a corbel. Built into the wall (not bolted on). Apparently it is a french term meaning crow as it is like a crows Beak. Pain in the arse to build either way 😂 Cheers for viewing and commenting 😀👍

dont like the bond on that corbell i like to start mine with a 170 then a header looks loads better from the front without the long joint
