Thank you for the wise thought Barton O'Farrell. Panama City is a relatively expensive place for most of Central America. Maybe only the tourist areas of Costa Rica are more expensive. Luckily, the smaller towns in Panama are more affordable. This channel is all about new ways of looking at things. . So, thank you, :-) Dan

My wife and I are thinking about flying to Panama City in November. If you were there for only a short time (10 days) which neighborhood would you stay in with an AirBNB? Still the Centennial Mall area? My wife is like Qiang, always up for an adventure but loves her Asian food. So we would be following Hobo Adventures foody videos as a guide. Looking forward to your guide on Panama. We are glad we are members of Vagabond Buddha. Thanks for forging the path!

My food expenses in Panama are about double what they are in the US, and I seldom eat out. If you like soft drinks, the prices here are more than twice what I pay in the US. Name-brand salad dressings are about 4x what I pay for the same bottle in the US. Roma tomatoes, peppers, and yellow onions are priced the same as the US; broccoli, lettuce, mushrooms, and asparagus are substantially more expensive. Avocados are ridiculously expensive. Eggs are about twice as expensive. For some reason, spinach is cheaper, but I've only found it at Riba Smith, and not at Super 99 or Rey.
Did you say you didn't take public buses or the metro? Take the $0.25 buses and $0.35 subways and explore the area. Did you even get out to the islands at the end of the Amador Causeway? It's one bus to Albrook and a free transfer on a second bus to get to the third island past the Causeway - total cost is a quarter. Spend the day/afternoon/evening meandering back for 2 or 3 hours, finishing by walking east along Cinta Costera then catching the 675 bus at Ave Frederico Boyd back towards Alta Plaza. Total of $0.50 in bus fares for the day. As always, bring your own water.

Asia like Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta, Ha Noi, Bali, etc.? Then a comparison of middle-sized cities. Then a comparison of the smaller towns/cities (apples to apples comparisons)? How do the infrastructures compare? Quality of life? Cost-of-living? Health care? English understood by the citizens? Things to do for the different age groups (40's vs 50's vs 60+)?

@@VagabondAwake Hi Dan, I wish I was in Panama :). Maybe in another 2 years, I'm hoping to retire at age 55. I watch all your videos. I live in the suburbs of Vancouver, British Columbia. This year so far (9 months) I've spent $200CAD ($160.00USD) a month. Last year I spend $320CAD ($250USD) in 2019 $276 CAD ($218USD) a month. I'm motivated to keep my expenses low to retire early and good practice for it. More than anything, I'm hoping for my grocery bills to be much less in places like Panama, Mexico, Colombia, and the P.I. I guess they're not as low as I was hoping in these places. I do know Quang likes her drink so that may have brought her expenses up a. I'm not much of a drinker (which is expensive in Canada). Also, I'm assuming the Chinese food she was buying is more expensive as it's imported to Panama? Would you agree? The biggest expenses in Canada is housing and transportation. I'm hoping to retire on $1,000 - $1,500USD a month in Latin Am., S,E. Asia, S. & E. Europe. In Vancouver that would just be rent.

As a Canadian, I visited Panama city ; the 2 grocery stores mentioned are mainly for expats . If you live as a native Panamanian from the average middle class ( nurses, teachers, etc) you do your grocery shopping in the local farmers market.
The average middle class Panamanians live outside Panama city in the suburbs like Capira, La Chorrera.
