Thanks for the great review. It's great to hear a demo with more than just random accidental noise. I heard usable, musical tones here. Take care, and thanks for posting.
20:50 Yessss!!!!! This is the missing feature in way too many sequencers e.g. Roland JP-08. Actually I consider any hardware step sequencer missing this feature to be fundamentally flawed. Plus 32 steps instead of the usual 16 makes the Crave worth the price just for the sequencer alone.
Thank you so much for demonstrating the accent like that ; I love them, I won't do acid music if there was no accents, and I'm glad they implemented it like that in the crave, even if it would have been nice to hear some new accent behaviour for a change but hey, that's better than no accent at all ^^
Thanks for this great review. It seems to be a great machine for the price. The Patchbay on top is awesome and clever. Its one of the main reason to get this one. Creative possibilities are very good for this price range via the patchbay and a personal modular background. The clicky buttons, dont like. - I miss some more informations for the shift-functions, to maybe not read a manual (ratcheting, VC Mix - 5V /Assign, arp-hold double tap, arp up/down/rdm on buttons, shift-rest-pattern for RESET omg*, ). - i heard a tempo issue in the sequencer on 18:30 when u use the glide. - lfo should temp sync by internal sequence - configure the assign? hm, i dont know... Hello ! I've just bought a crave and tested the lfo in audio mode. There is always less than an octave between two notes yet separated by an octave on the keyboard. I take this opportunity to thank you for your pedagogic work.
I calibrated the distance between octaves with the little screw on the left under oscillator frequency. Following another video on TH-cam. Hope that helps!
Back in the day amazing music was being made with equipment not as advanced at this. Behringer are doing something really good for those who aren’t lucky to not have to worry about money. Good for them.
Many thanks for posting. Deciphering the somewhat cryptic sequencer mysteries into something useful has been a bit daunting, but your posting here can guide just about anyone through the process, even myself.
To my ears, the M32 filter, if it's better at all, certainly doesn't sound $400 better. Would be nice to side-by-side compare them though. The tone of the VCO is the biggest difference I can hear.
@@mattsynth There kind of is something like it, you can clone the circuit and it doesn't matter if it was made by a company named Moog. My understanding is that this filter is the same one used in the Behringer Model D, so in fact it IS a Moog ladder filter. Also, I was asking what particular aspect of the filter you like better on the M32, some tired old line about the Moog filter doesn't really mean anything to me. Also, you think it's called a "latter filter" so what do you know anyway?
Thanks for the tutorial, the best tutorial and explanation that I have found, in August I bought the creave and I could not get a tutorial that was so well structured and understood like yours, excellent
For the price and number of features, it's pretty solid. If you want your first semi-modular synth to expand on.. this isn't a bad idea. The price-point is also great for someone looking to satisfy their G.A.S. with something new to throw at it.
fakshen1973 Behringer is really killing it with introductory semi modular synths. This and the Model D are way better value for your money than something like the Grandmother right now.
I remember watching your video before I got the CRAVE. I should have watched it afterwards again. So much good advise in it! 2020 - LFO Rate and VCF Cutoff are still not 1V/Oct. That's annoying especially for the LFO.
If this is $200 or less then this is really crazy value. Basically they created a Moog Mother32 for 1/3 the price. Pretty crazy. Sounds decent too. Even just a single oscillator module like the Dixie ii+ would cost more than this whole thing. Yes, the Dixie does sound better and has more waveforms, but still, this is a great gateway drug to modular.
I’ll echo everyone else’s comments that this was VERY helpful and an awesome review (as all of your videos are). My Crave arrives tomorrow and I’ll be going through this video again. I’m hoping to connect it up with a Beatstep Pro that I’m trying to figure out… in case you’re inspired to go in-depth with one of those that would be helpful too!
Thank you fro the in depth review, always THE benchmark for me. If I can chip in my 2cts about the sequencer: this is the most obscure sequencer operation approach that I have ever seen (and with 30 years experience with midi and gear I have seen a damn lot!). First the manual is weirdly organised, for instance the DELETE PATTERN is described in the CREATING A PATTERN section, then it does not state that you must clear the pattern page by page (at least with my unit). In addition I think the led system is inconsistent, so it is very hard to know what is going on, and what mode is actually active (STEP, STEP EDIT, PLAY, KEYBOARD or whatever). After 3 hours just on the sequencer, I still feel like my unit is faulty (probably not) and I still haven't been able to seamlessly programme something useful into it. On the other hand, the sound and the general approach of the Crave for sound design are really good, and for the list price it is a great analog unit with modular capabilities - that's why I bought it: as an introduction to analog and modular (for me), and it really does the job. But for my peace of mind i now sequence it with my MPC, i've abandoned all hopes with the onboard sequencer.
They were thinking about getting less clicky "keys" from the feedback od some of the testers, it was talked about in a video but I forgot whos.....I guess it was out of the budget. Great video as always, don't take jokes to heart. ;p

Yeah, Behringer is all like "here's all the cool shit in the pipeline, don't go buying anyone else's stuff even though it could be years before our stuff is available."
It’s the same oscillator circuit as the Neutron and the same filter circuit as the Model D, so you could fatten up a Neutron patch or kind of make one “tri-phonic.” Check out Behringer’s TH-cam channel for some interesting synthwave demos with their 808 clone.
Ordered one from my preferred synth retailer and I’m hoping to get 1st dibs. I’ve been lusting after the mother 32 for some time but I couldn’t justify the price for a single oscillator synth so this will do very nicely.

I'll be skimming the ceiling or plaster in the front of a house and if I'm not checking this in between I'm listening to it on my headphones 👊💪🔥🔥🔥
Thanks and thanks for taking the time to write!
I bought a Crave and I use the Korg Nu Tek for FX. Talk about bang per buck !! Cheers for your insightful reviews.
great vid and I appreciate the extensive notes on which time to jump to, in order to see a feature
Thanks Ziv another great video. Tuning the filter reminded me of back in the 70s spending ages tuning an octave on my Synthi A with the DK2 keyboard only for it to go out of tune a few minutes later.
As a beginner considering his first synth purchase, thank you. Sincerely...
You can get the Behringer Model D for around $230-250 on Reverb brand new too. Just wait for price drops, they happen pretty frequently.
Mikeureko those are better?
You present your material extremely succinctly! Fantastic work as always. Thanks again.
Excellent review, as always. Really appreciate the details you provide on the left of the screen.
this is a better synthesis intro tutorial than any synthesis 101 intro tutorial
Very, very impressive... kudos to Uli and a truly amazing development team 👍🏻
Development was done by Moog.
@sbmphr Spotted a Behringer Fanboy.
Thanks for the video - after buying a DFAM I couldnt justify buying the Mother32 and bought one of these used for £100 - fingers crossed.
Recently Behringer took a new way, more synth and modular oriented, with much better quality and beeing still accessible for everyone. I think it is a good thing and it contrains the competency moving his ass to propose new machines and maybe more "democratic price" too...
The Patchbay on top is awesome and clever. Its one of the main reason to get this one.
Creative possibilities are very good for this price range via the patchbay and a personal modular background.
The clicky buttons, dont like.
- I miss some more informations for the shift-functions, to maybe not read a manual
(ratcheting, VC Mix - 5V /Assign, arp-hold double tap, arp up/down/rdm on buttons, shift-rest-pattern for RESET omg*, ).
- i heard a tempo issue in the sequencer on 18:30 when u use the glide.
- lfo should temp sync by internal sequence
- configure the assign? hm, i dont know...
I was short listen to dfam and moog mother...but....the warm sound is not in the crave....
Yeah, i'd also like to know if assign works as midi input for the mod-wheel of a midi-keyboard, i cant get it working for me :/
@@c-ouvert Thats why presentations are so worthy. Because the Advertise dont show it closer. Finally i was not hyped...
@@c-ouvert for me too. i even can't the connect gate and kyb cv and the keystp pro instead using midi. i dont get any signal at all. do you have an idea why?
I want just to use with my minibrute2.
@@pedromarquez2324 can you please give a link to the mentioned video?

@@gdrdm thanks!
@@SergeiVlassov But the calibration only changes the VCO. The LFO is still out of tune ...
Back in the day amazing music was being made with equipment not as advanced at this. Behringer are doing something really good for those who aren’t lucky to not have to worry about money. Good for them.
Could you translate this into plain English, "for those who aren’t lucky to not have to worry about"
@@Johngaltsghost "for those who aren’t lucky -enough- to not have to worry about"

I have the audio from this tutorial running through the ext of my crave while you're teaching me the sequencer settings lol

Robots have taken power, for starters. This synth is actually their leader.

This and the model d and a keystep--maybe a reverb pedal or flashback--can take you far.

But then they went out of business since they had no one left to copy / clone.

Let's not root for more corporate mergers, we have enough monopolies.

I cant wait to see what hardware mods come to this , i would love to see differend colored versions too
Best crave and MS101 sequencer tutorial ever
I hope you do a review on Behringer Edge when it comes out!!! It will be one for the ages, plut no one will be able to explain it like you Loop!
Thanks! My DFAM videos will take you through pretty much everything you need to know
Everything should be measured in volcas
Many thanks for posting. Deciphering the somewhat cryptic sequencer mysteries into something useful has been a bit daunting, but your posting here can guide just about anyone through the process, even myself.
I love how this synth is shoving his MIDI thru in the face of everyone.
Underrated comment of the year 🔥🔥🔥 i couldn’t agree more
Thx brother just bought a Crave and this was VERY helpful for a newbee :-)
If I didn't already have 2 Mother 32s, I'd snatch this up for sure.
Edit: Still might anyway. LOL.
Mothers have much better filter.
mattsynth I thought this filter sounded pretty awesome, what do you like better about the mother filter?
To my ears, the M32 filter, if it's better at all, certainly doesn't sound $400 better. Would be nice to side-by-side compare them though. The tone of the VCO is the biggest difference I can hear.
There is nothing like a fat, thick, low end Moog latter filter.
Here here! Check out Ziv’s (loopop’s) Patreon book for the new chapter on dealing with Gear Acquisition Syndrome!
Whatever about modular, it's an amazing oscillator, Vcf & lfo! Sounds huge
Bloomin' marvelous! I'm sat here with a purring crave! Cheers mate!
I think 'Crave' and "Neutron" would make a nice pair..
They do. I bought them together for a Eurorack-a-like synth for a nice price. Patching betwween them is easy and powerful
Yep that's my setup
No skipping ahead on this video for me - really well done ☕️
DIN MIDI and patch points right where they belong!!! Yay for Behringer! Winning!!
Just ordered mine, I intend to use it with my Alesia Vortex Wireless 2. Great review!
unfortunately the voltage per octave for the LFO was not fixed in the production units :(
Yup, tested mine too.
same here
I see a niche market for a simple CV amplifier module 😁
I’ll echo everyone else’s comments that this was VERY helpful and an awesome review (as all of your videos are).
My Crave arrives tomorrow and I’ll be going through this video again.
I’m hoping to connect it up with a Beatstep Pro that I’m trying to figure out… in case you’re inspired to go in-depth with one of those that would be helpful too!
If it's really $200/€200 then it's a no-brainer. Thanks for the excellent extensive review.
[edit] some sources say it's only gonna be €150...
wow heaven is coming
I'm from the future and things are very similar to yesterday. Nice synth.
I appreciate the shallow depth of field on the overhead shot
Always reminds me of a chocolate and caramel biscuit. Makes me wanna eat it.
Came back to this video several times...Best review honestly! Cheers mate
I wish I was from the future and owned this right now.
Don't you mean... right after?

WOW! I’m a guitar player, and I’m getting one of these! Cool!
First thing I thought when I saw that transport section was 'a mother 32!'
Just incredibly well done. Just learning my Crave and I'm going to be re-watching.
There's also the very beautiful-looking and sonically diverse Volca Modular... :)
For $200 this has got to be one of the best for the price. I would love to see a few of them poly chained.
This almost feels like an extension for the neutron. I want to get one just for the sequencer and ladder filter tbh
They were thinking about getting less clicky "keys" from the feedback od some of the testers, it was talked about in a video but I forgot whos.....I guess it was out of the budget.
Great video as always, don't take jokes to heart. ;p
ha no worries - the problem with jokes sometimes is that there's no tone in comments... so an innocent remark read in a certain tone can be interpreted very differently than what the OP intended...
Crave + Neutron = Analog Patchy Goodness (loads of functionality built into those two patch bays)
Just got a Neutron and now I want this as a portable Neutron lol

Yo Loo...not sure who is sponsoring your site, but the advertisement for a special bra that opened your vid definitely had me scratching my head. No pun intended. Apart from that, it's almost cliché to say "great job" when you do a video, but I'll say it anyway: great job on this! As always, very good balance of specific information with personal observation and demonstration. As for the Crave, it does have some appeal, no doubt.
Thanks for the nice comment about the video - it doesn't get old ;) Regarding the ad, yeah, it's what youtube's brightest minds believe you'd want to see based on all this time they've been tracking you ;)

@@zibbybone which doesn't work, it's not that we stop looking elsewhere. :-)
Love the sound, and the color of this thing, and it's in my (weak Canadian) price range, deffintly going onto my list
If you've still got this, is there any chance you could hook it up to a neutron or 0-coast and see what can be done with it?
Yes! I'm specifically looking to get one to pair with (and sequence) my Neutron.... I'd love to see that pairing ahead of time.
I'd like to see it paired with a Model D myself....but it does look like an interesting partner with a variety of devices.
It’s the same oscillator circuit as the Neutron and the same filter circuit as the Model D, so you could fatten up a Neutron patch or kind of make one “tri-phonic.” Check out Behringer’s TH-cam channel for some interesting synthwave demos with their 808 clone.
it´s in production now! can't wait
Wonder when i can buy it, what do you think like in 8 weeks or something?

One osc synth is a dealbreaker for me, for any synth... They should AT LEAST add a sub oscillator which you can detune a few cents up and down...
for 200 bucks? I don't think this is possible... :/

Good review. Using filters and LFOs to play notes is pretty wild and something I'd never considered before!
My "turn to" synth review site.
Ordered one from my preferred synth retailer and I’m hoping to get 1st dibs. I’ve been lusting after the mother 32 for some time but I couldn’t justify the price for a single oscillator synth so this will do very nicely.
There is a whole world of guitarists who have equipment that converts their music into MIDI (via devices like the GR-20, for example). If they're like me, they'd just love a demo of the MIDI IN capability.
