I applied for social security in Vietnam but I still have mailing address in California. The trick was I called using Google voice with my own US phone number. Plus I used VPN on my computer as if I’m in California . I had a phone appointment at 9:45AM in California (1:45AM in Vietnam). They also gave me an option to interview with the SS office in Manila philipine. It turned out the office in the Philippine was extremely busy. So I’m glad that I tough it out and kept the US appointment in the middle of the night. As the result, I received my benefits on time with no hiccups… I thought I shared my story in case some US citizens try to apply for the social security benefits from south East Asia…

What I know here in the state , Cali, they said they paid one month late always and not exactly on your bday date even tho applied 2 months ahead . Is this corrected ?

Hello fellow Virgo. My story is much the same. I am 64 and applied on Jan 4th of this year. First email response- Please wait two months. After I waited two months- another email sent to Malina and the next response- Please wait another month. After I waited that month, another email sent into Manila, and after two weeks of no response, I hear back- I have my phone interview on June 18th. So 6.5 months from the time I began the application. Wow.

If your 62nd birthday is in September, your first month of eligibility is the following month, when you are that age for the full month. And then SS pays one month in arrears, so your first payment would be the last week of November, assuming your bday was towards the end of the month in September. If you you’ve already been approved, it should show that on your SSA website account page. Hope you get things cleared up soon!

I’m curious as to why someone needs a phone interview. Is this something that everyone has to get if they apply after moving overseas? What exactly is the interview for if the online application has already been approved?
Yes, as far as I know and per google…The SSA might interview SSI and SSDI benefits applicants, but a call is especially common if you're applying for SSI. Determining what counts as income for SSI can get complicated, so the SSA uses a phone call to make sure they understand your current income and assets.
