Firstly. Thank you for your content, I really appreciate it. I have lost my running mojo many times over the years and am recently back on it, with your videos… Secondly, thank you for the straightforward structure you suggest. I took the 10% faster than goal pace and tested it at THE TRACK this evening. I could not believe what I was actually capable of and whilst there is huge room for improvement, I now have a benchmark to use and measure against. Totally agree about training for the surface you are going to race on, but as a runner of many years who had never run on a track until this evening, I have to say I found it really rather useful (even though I was the only one there).
Thanks Alex, I couldn't agree more. If it gets you running in a structured way and you get something from it, great! Whatever gives you that mojo back and gets you running sub 45. 🚀
Thanks for that Lee. I never thought about some of the things you said although it makes perfect sense. I do a club track session on Mondays. I'm aware it's easier than the the surfaces I normally run on but usually use it to practice pacing.
I tend to mix my weekly interval session between the track and the local park, being aware that the bends on the track would create an uneven load on the left and right side. The upside is that going to the track gives me positive energy and a sense of getting things done, even though I'll still be training alone.
For me it’s all about just having a stable reference for my intervals, 400m, 800m, time based intervals, etc…just allows me to be able to have a variable that I don’t have to account for when running for time/speed, keeps my heart rate reliable for a given effort, etc.
Super interesting! Thank you. What are your thoughts on doing some of the interval sessions on the treadmill? I find it’s a lot easier to hold the paces indoors, but after watching your video I feel like it’s probably not ideal because completely different settings than in the actual race? Keep up the great work - you quickly turned into my favorite running channel! 🎉
Thanks Tanja! The treadmill is great when mixed with your regular, outdoor running. Whenever I do too much on a treadmill and not enough outdoors, the fitness doesn't translate across to racing.
You keep mentioning running with a "group" on the track... I hit the track solo and use it only because its the best way I can accurately measure the distances for my intervals. When doing tempos i run on trails or road.
Yes, I also did similar, but the other problems remain. Just something to think about, it typically only becomes an issue for runners when they notice the imbalances or injury.

I'm glad you got something from it Peter.

Do you feel faster on the track?
My RPE for a particular pace does tend to feel lower on the track, yeah.

Wealth of knowledge, thanks so much! 😉
Glad it was helpful!
