I never cease to be amazed by the chaotic scenes of Greek ferries loading/unloading. Trucks, cars, motorcycles, pedestrians all embarking and disembarking at the same time! A far cry from the "Health and Safety" culture of Northern Europe. You wouldn't see anything like that at Dover or Calais! With weather even half as bad, the services would be cancelled.
The Greek sailors commuting between the islands,in the winter, are true seamen. They know the currents,the reefs, and how tricky the Med can be, in any season. They don´t fuss about. They just get the job done. Same as the OLYMPIC pilots, flying in the Autum/Wintertime. Most landings have 20min. of turbulence. (Is that the word?) I´ve done it a few times. Usually I don´t mind, but when the Airhostess start screaming, I get a little aprehensive. :o) Sailors & Aircrews of Greece ; I salute you.

They stood there ground & performed a minor miracle, along with the captain relying upon his experienced crew to bring the vessel in with amazing skill between them. I bet that many viewers could not manage the same feat, given the conditions being operated under!

Too bad you can't see how the ferry docks in the island of Mykines in the Faroe Islands. People have to jump on board, there is no ramp, no nothing. One must be living on an island to actually nderstand it is not always facile or "safe".
When people dare risk so much to serve society ( mind that this island has no other conectin with the main land) they do not do a simple job. In this case, a proper and professional attitude is that you do not risk a ship, crew and passengers ... but ... I have been on this exact ferry at this exact port many times and it is spectacular to watch every time. This instance isnt even close to the most difficult dockings I have seen there. The ground crew is equally qualified and the locals getting on and off have a system and watch the surf, its now or next week!
a few years ago I spent summer backpacking around the Greek islands and was astonished at the speed these ferries turn round and they run on time. at least in good summer weather
Here in the uk, the health and safety issues would drive our officials bonkers. This is exactly how it should be done. No fuss and hey presto!! Unloading/loading done. I love it!!!
For all those idiotic comments of no safety and build up a better port... We are not a rich country...we have 100s inhabited islands that must be serviced and we simply can't build proper facilities to all of them for various reasons such as very few inhabitants, not enough money or very deep waters...majority of those block piers were hardly installed on the rocky descending coast... The Captains have to berth the vessel in order to bring supplies and medicines...winter time only ships can approach not even helicopters due to the strong winds prevailing in Aegean sea! Islanders are familiar with this kind of fast loading unloading process and they are very thankful and admiring the captains and crew of those vessels....its their lifeline!

This is the tiny jetty at Agnontas on Skopelos Island. Fantastic seamanship that you see every day on the Greek Islands, they are ship masters of the highest calibre. This little jetty on the South is the number 3 alternative to the main ports of Skopelos Town on the East and Glossa on the North West. On bad weather days, when leaving the island, you have to check which port your ferry might be forced to use - and then find a a taxi fast!
In Croatia we make piers as a protection from south winds. Kimnos port is totally open to worst storms. It is an infrastructure problem luckily solved by the superskilled crews :)

Yes, most Greek islands are under serviced and with limited or non existent access to proper means of transportation via sea or air, connection with the mainland suffers. I know because I'm originally from one of these small islands. But this is no excuse to act irresponsibly and risk lives. its a very small greek island with just 250 people living on it and the boat aproach just twice a week during the summer and twice a month during the winter .Locals are the heroes that they still stay there

Old fashioned seamanship. Probably done pretty often, but us lubber knees knock at the sight of a wave big enough to surf. The woman at the end running to get on, " Wait ! I can swim ! " :)
Not much choice really for the small islands. In the winter bad weather can go on for months. At some point they need to get supplies, go see doctors etc.
+Jon B No it is very good practice. What he is doing is is attaching the bow (forward ) line. He is then engaging forward gear and as the boat cannot move forward the stern of the ship is carried in against the dock. They then attach the stern line. To do it in a boat this size is something. You need a really strong bollard !
All this is amazing, but the most amazing thing is that the crew weren't distracted by the puking and chanting of "get me the fuck off this crazy boat"
Lifejackets and safety lines would make a hell of a lot more sense than Hi-Vis jackets. Is the boat is going to jump the dock and run into them? The owners of those vehicles had better hose the undersides with fresh water right away.

these islands are remote, and do not have a frequent ferry connection. during the winter, it could take over a week for weather to calm down, and people need to run urgent matters too. there are not a lot of public services on these islands. besides, if the coast guard allowed the ship to do the trip, it means there is no danger.
I assume you're not from Europe. Greek islands are not at all remote. In fact, I don't think there's anywhere in the Aegean Sea where there isn't a direct line of site to the mainland. Also, even during winter the Mediterranean doesn't get rough for days on end. 12 hours after this video was recorded the sea conditions could well have been completely different. Do you actually believe that there is no danger simply because the coast guard didn't stop them? Surely you can see with your own eyes that there was a very real danger of being washed off the jetty into the sea.
Each of those vehicles which had their wheels immersed in salt water up to the brake shoes may have brake problems later$$$ spent later. Been there, done that.
I live on an island and the tourists love riding through our floods. Hilarious! That's ocean water, people. Rinsing off your truck ain't gonna cut it. You have to submerge your whole car in a pool of circulating clean water if you want a slim chance of no electrical or mechanical problems down the road. Idiots!! +dawn lewis depends on the car really. salt water is bad but its not that bad. my leaf? i wont let that near sw spray. my old jeep? it was lifted 4" with 31's little salt water did nothing to it. spray it down oil some parts etc.. and your good. 497,000 miles when i sold it no rust. you do have to be carrful especially if you splash or go deep enough where you have hidden cavities with sitting salt water. will corrode metals really fast.

And all of those people leaving alone on those islands are waiting every day needs even doctors etc from these ships. It is very easy to say bullshit when you are out of the problem! So North European boddies; continue your sleep on your sofa infront of your pc dreaming that you know everything!! And next summer come here to see how real life sea and islands are. PS because you have so many ship accidents with the 5% of our ship lines, next time hire a Greek Captain to feel secure!
Wow! Amazing ship handling and pier work by those people. IF that is a fairly frequent occurrence it might make some sense to raise the level of the pier by at least one meter. That would require the entire approach road to have and angle change also, so it would be an expensive project.

its a very small greek island with just 250 people living on it and the boat aproach just twice a week during the summer and twice a month during the winter .Locals are the heroes that they still stay there

Wow, impressive skills. Don't know how he managed to keep that ferry from pounding on that unprotected dock. They've obviously done this before, though, because passengers seemed to take it all in stride.

Being half Greek from the island of Crete...it is the old country and the old ways! Beautiful though.
All you accusing the captain and the crew that they are risking and violating rules during this docking you should know that if they do not dock then the whole island runs out of food, medicines and nobody leaves even if he is in need.
And by the way there are NO RULES saying if and when the captain decides do dock or not.
SO STOP BEING ASHOLES AND RESPECT THE CAPTAIN AND THE CREW.

As far as islands running out of food that's bullshit...on most Greek islands there are daily services so how on earth could you run out.

Not much choice really for the small islands. In the winter bad weather can go on for months. At some point they need to get supplies, go see doctors etc.
+Jon B No it is very good practice. What he is doing is is attaching the bow (forward ) line. He is then engaging forward gear and as the boat cannot move forward the stern of the ship is carried in against the dock. They then attach the stern line.
To do it in a boat this size is something. You need a really strong bollard !
No, it's not good practice. I can see exactly what he's doing but the chances of a person or a vehicle being swept away are unacceptably high.

Corrosion, or an oxygenation layer, need to provide passivization. It does for aluminum. It doesn't for iron and steel unless chromium is added. .

these islands are remote, and do not have a frequent ferry connection.
during the winter, it could take over a week for weather to calm down, and people need to run urgent matters too.
there are not a lot of public services on these islands.
besides, if the coast guard allowed the ship to do the trip, it means there is no danger.
I assume you're not from Europe. Greek islands are not at all remote. In fact, I don't think there's anywhere in the Aegean Sea where there isn't a direct line of site to the mainland. Also, even during winter the Mediterranean doesn't get rough for days on end. 12 hours after this video was recorded the sea conditions could well have been completely different.
Do you actually believe that there is no danger simply because the coast guard didn't stop them? Surely you can see with your own eyes that there was a very real danger of being washed off the jetty into the sea.
Health & Safety would have a field day if this happened in the UK. The Greeks do not mess about. :-)
Each of those vehicles which had their wheels immersed in salt water up to the brake shoes may have brake problems later$$$ spent later. Been there, done that.

I live on an island and the tourists love riding through our floods. Hilarious! That's ocean water, people. Rinsing off your truck ain't gonna cut it. You have to submerge your whole car in a pool of circulating clean water if you want a slim chance of no electrical or mechanical problems down the road. Idiots!! But, your on an island, you just don't have a choice, like those people, because if you don't get to work, you don't eat.
+dawn lewis depends on the car really. salt water is bad but its not that bad. my leaf? i wont let that near sw spray. my old jeep? it was lifted 4" with 31's little salt water did nothing to it. spray it down oil some parts etc.. and your good. 497,000 miles when i sold it no rust. you do have to be carrful especially if you splash or go deep enough where you have hidden cavities with sitting salt water. will corrode metals really fast.

Everybody here talking about regulation rough seas etc. Most of you have
no idea about sea and what is the colour of it! and ofcourse you have
no idea how it is to have 1000 islands, many of them with 20 - 30
inhabitatnts in Aegean sea which has half of the year 8-9 beaufort wind.
And all of those people leaving alone on those islands are waiting
every day needs even doctors etc from these ships. It is very easy to
say bullshit when you are out of the problem! So North European boddies;
continue your sleep on your sofa infront of your pc dreaming that you
know everything!! And next summer come here to see how real life sea and
islands are. PS because you have so many ship accidents with the 5% of
our ship lines, next time hire a Greek Captain to feel secure!
Wow! Amazing ship handling and pier work by those people. IF that is a fairly frequent occurrence it might make some sense to raise the level of the pier by at least one meter. That would require the entire approach road to have and angle change also, so it would be an expensive project.
