When Miller watches the decoded video of what happened to the crew and just plainly and calmly says "We're leaving." that's the best character moment, something you never see people do in horror movies yet you always scream at them to do. It makes him infinitely memorable and appreciable. He is the most grounded and realistic character in this, and he thinks of the safety of his crew first over any other motivation.

Fun fact.. I met Sean Pertwee at London Comic Con. He said he asked director Paul Anderson for EVERY version of the film on dvd because he was very proud of it. When I turned up at his table he was like "WTF is this!?" I had a very limited edition of the film that is in a case that is the hull of the Event Horizon. Sean Pertwee was P*SSED. He grilled me as to where I got it and I was honest, I was in Asda (UK Walmart) for my groceries and picked it up. It was the only one there. He asked if I had another copy but unfortunately not. He was a good sport he signed it. First time ive p*ssed a celebrity off! 😂

I always interpreted it as Weir building the ship as a physics experiment, and not really knowing what it actually ended up doing. Sort of a Fuck Around and Find Out situation. It didnt travel to distant space, so much as stay put and hop to literal hell. Some kind of demonic entity possessed the ship, hence the strange life readings, and it began chipping away at the crew's sanity by making them hallucinate their biggest fears. Once they were driven sufficiently insane, they began ferally butchering eachother. And then Miller's crew was sent to investigate once it returned to its home dimension, carrying the demonic entity. Weir was particularly susceptible since his work on the ship was likely what drove his wife to take a long bath.

At 40:21, you both make really good points. Basically, the movie had to be cut waasy down to get a Solid R rating. Originally, it was over two hours long. You're absolutely right dude. There was a whole sub plot where each crew member had to deal with spiritual demons tormenting them. For EXAMPLE. The Latin speaking guy had a surgical scar guy down his stomach from a past injury. The plot fell to the way side because of editing for time. But originally, it pointed out how he was scared of hospitals, surgery and scars. THAT'S WHY, Dr. Wier cuts him open and strings him up! Basically they went over budget and we're out of money. The final fight scene was actually supposed to be two different fight scenes. First, the ghost of the flaming man. THEN WIER. They combined it to save time. Even so, this movie is truly horrific.

Definitely one of Anderson’s best films. I notice that this one, AVP, and resident evil all revolve around a team investigating an abandoned location where things went awry and it reawakens shortly after they get there. It’s not a bad thing, I’m saying I really love the recurring theme in at least 3 of his movies, none of which are connected

Classic horror sequence when they unscramble the Ships Log. For me, this is where the horror kicked into high gear. When watching movies like Event Horizon, I cannot have soda or popcorn containers in my hands. What the crew did to themselves made me scream and I am not ashamed to admit that. I exited Event Horizon with nearly a full Large Popcorn. This movie stayed with me for days after viewing.

I saw this movie when it came out on VHS and I was 18 and a senior in High School. Honestly this was the last movie to really scare me where weeks later and I was still thinking of the movie and the scarier/nastier scenes. It got in my head and freaked me out so much I didn't watch it again until I was 35 when on a whim I bought it on Blu-ray and didn't affect me like it did when I was younger. Still a fan of this movie, as well as the reaction you two made!

From what I've heard in interviews (the Critical Drinker did one with one of the actresses that was pretty enlightening) a lot of great content was lost in the original cut of the movie.
...Which literally disintegrated because it was left in a repurposed salt mine. Movies are weird.

the first time i saw this was in the theatre with some friends. when all the blood drops when the gravity is turned back on, one of my friends abruptly stood up and walked out. he came back a few minutes later and just said "i shit myself." the second time i saw this movie was when i was in a mental institution. (i had a bad reaction to some meds i was on at the time). i requested it for movie night. by the end of the film it was only myself and 2 orderlies still watching. we also watched "fight club" the next week. i requested that one as well. i should mention that there were no beds available for temporary patients, so i was put in the ward with the schizophrenics and lifers. we had a padded room. fun times. good movie, though.

In case anyone was wondering, "Weir" is a real last name, it's original meaning being a small dam used to divert water flow in rivers and creeks. Although, I think they used it due to it being so close to "Weird." ;)

The gravity drive reminds me of the film 'Sphere' starring Dustin Hoffman.
Also, if you'd like another good space movie, I'd recommend 'Supernova' from 2000, starring James Spader and Angela Bassett.

The director said that this is an unofficial prequel intro to Warhammer 40K. The Event Horizon ended up traveling through the Warp and was possessed by a Daemon which came back to the Materium with it :P
This is why you NEED a Geller field, folks. If you're interested in a similar kind of story, I'd highly recommend reading The Flight of the Eisenstein in the Horus Heresy series.
