Like you I started out with Ubuntu.. have tried several other distributions. I decided about 2 years ago on Mint for my daily driver. Absolutely no regrets.
Why for beginner? This is good distro for almost everyone. Even very experienced Linux user can make everything on mint becouse this is still Debian. You just get it with preinstalled apps
I'm running T480 on Ubuntu latest version, and I find both Mint Cinnamon and XFCE laggy and buggy. For me Ubuntu is the best no need for customization, i dont why this distro gets the most hate despite being the most used distro.
I recently tried and fell in love with LMDE. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian, LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) is based directly on Debian.
ubuntu also has cinnamon edition which makes it look exactly like mint cinnamon. Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu LTS. Mint 21 mate, XFCE & cinnamon would crash all the time on my old laptop, which seems to crash less on Linux mint 22 cinnamon. Ubuntu just works out of the box after installation - like wifi works automatically along with audio. This isnt the case with Linux Mint which consistently doesnt recognize wifi after a fresh install - which is problematic.
I use Ubuntu but think I might go with CachyOS with KDE or Hyprland in the future. Linux Mint Cinnamon says they have experimental wayland support; so Ubuntu might have an edge here for now and this is important for gaming, etc.
Linux Mint deserved the point for performance and, undoubtedly, software available: Flatpak is simply the way to go. But the issue in this comparison is the time omission: Mint uses the Ubuntu base, but months afterwards. So the software point would suffer as well.
I chose Linix Mint 22 because it's fantastic and because I don't trust Canonical. I'm fleeing Microsot not to fall in the handa of another untrustful coropo.

Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS has started to feel as buggy as Windows after recent updates, making my daily workflow challenging. After sleep, the Wi-Fi often fails to reconnect, and shutdowns sometimes stall, forcing a hard shutdown. There are times when I think my laptop is off, only to find it heating up in my bag because it didn't actually power down. Occasionally, the system even freezes on the login screen, where no commands work to revive it. I set up my entire environment on this OS expecting stability, but now I’m regretting that choice deeply.
Snaps are enough for me to unequivocally choose Ubuntu. From my experience Snaps work much faster and more stable than Flatpak, Deb or RPM. Every time I launch a Flatpak on my Debian system first a pop up window appears saying "the application is running in the background", and only after a while the application window appears. While snaps launch like a rocket. And this on the same system. I am a Linux user since 2008. Ubuntu and Snaps are awesome and wish them to become even better.
Linux Mint keeps crashing unlike Ubuntu, so Ubuntu is most reliable from my POV. Secondly ubuntu is also available with cinnamon desktop, so the difference is minimal now.
I like ubuntu for being a basis for many good distributions. I used it many years. Ubuntu itself is now a no go for me due to snap. Linux Mint is the better ubuntu now. I just installed gnome, sudo apt install gnome, ready to go!
