I was like you with the "free" thing. It seems dumb at first but I do think it helps in two ways. 1) it gets people who are not willing to buy YET closer to doing it and 2) it makes it easier for those who are looking to buy since they can record their song and when it's done they just buy a license. Plus, what you said, if everyone is doing it and it seems to be working for them why not join
