Baby Bull, Phabeni Has Created New Dynamics in the Elephant Herd

- Watch the start to a new day with Phabeni at the orphanage, as he meets up with the herd. Together, the elephants head out into the greater wilderness, with the little bull wrapped in a red blanket moving between the giant legs around him. Phabeni stays close to Setombe and Khanyisa also joins the little pack of elephants around the bull. Carers Owen and Last share insight into the herd dynamics and how things have changed since Phabeni joined his new elephant family.
Bubi and Setombe were both outsiders somewhat before Phabeni arrived, with Bubi often walking at the back of the herd rather than with anyone. She got on well with Fishan but was not often around the other females. Dominant female, Setombe similarly kept to herself, and only really spent time with Sebakwe, the dominant bull, or her daughter, Klaserie. Since Setombe stepped in and adopted Phabeni - surprising us all - she has gained new followers. Bubi has been spending more time around Setombe, keeping her company and helping to look after Phabeni, creating a new relationship and bond between these two older females. A bond we could never have expected. Setombe is also often accompanied by Kumbura who is helping as an allomother to Phabeni. Setombe is hardly alone these days!
We will continue to share insight into the herd behaviours as the weeks go by, but one thing is for sure, Phabeni has united many lone hearts in the herd and certainly captured ours too. It is simply amazing the impact new babies have in a herd.
This channel makes me so happy in my old age. Thank you for taking such good care of the elephants and protecting them. They are such an important part of our world.
I agree 🐘🐘
Me too such a joy to watch. Thank you so much😊
When you film Phabeni alone, every time I think what a big little boy he’s becoming! But then when he gets among the herd, I realize what a tiny tater tot he still is! 💕
He is a tater tot😂 That's part of the magic. He's so confident 🎉
Makes you truly realize how much the pink princess has grown also...
Since he has an adoptive mom, why is he not left with the herd full-time?
@deborahcarroll2172 I belive its because he is still on milk bottles thru the night
@@deborahcarroll2172 First, Denelle is right in that he needs milk and Setombe doesn’t make any! I also want to posit that he’s not the healthiest little bull, not as if he’d been Setombe’s own from the start, and probably still needs monitering (and possible mental/emotional care - they may not be sharing the more brutal parts of his recovery…)
It also may just be safer. A baby elephant can quickly go from shy to eager, and if everyone’s asleep when he totters off to explore, disaster could strike. This is true of a wild herd, but when you can prevent the death of a tiny endangered animal, why not?
I have to Thank the HERD, they have brought such JOY to my life, at such a critical time.
THANK YOU HERD!
I felt exactly the same way when I first started watching the Herd. I believe watching has helped me so much. I no longer feel so sorry for myself. I could watch them 27/7. Thank you Herd.😘
Same! I have purpose. 🥰
I so agree. I look forward to these videos so much!

Sharon, I don't know what you've been going through, and even if I did I'm not sure I would know what to say.
I'm praying for you. 🙏🏼
He's a little Scottish elephant today with his tartan blanket
And the lil lad wears it qute appropriately. He has no undies underneath. 😮😅❤
Little pink blanket with 4 legs and a little trunk is moving surrounded by big legs ant trunks. Adorable.
It's the best!!! I cover our pig up every time she lays down but every time somebody goes in the kitchen she has to jump up & go running & her blanket ALWAYS stays on😂😂😂😂 She's a mess.
😅
There is nothing on this planet cuter than a baby elephant
A baby hippo is very cute !!!
@@andralee1964oh my goodness, bouncing baby hippos also fill me with joy!! There used to be a commercial for some product (that I can’t even remember) that talked about people’s homes having house hippos - it showed them scampering around people’s kitchens and living rooms when they were asleep and made them about … rat size. If I’d have seen that commercial as a young child I’d have believed they were real and been begging my parents for my own house hippo. 🦛🦛🦛 😊
I love the hair that sticks up like a Mohican. My first born son had hair like this and was called Spike fora while.
I love watching Phabeni’s excitement and baby run to get to his herd. ❤️👶🏻🐘
Humans have alot to learn from elephants. Here is this baby bull, with HIS BEAUTIFUL SOUL, orphaned, given, a new HOME, MOM. And herd. HE IS THRIVING AND HAPPY 😊 ❤❤
You are right! We could learn a lot from HERD!
So agree. They take care of eachother.
Perfectly said
Bubi and Setombe becoming besties all because of baby Phabeni! This is wonderful 😊
I saw the new herd dynamics and i am completely overjoyed that it is true. Now, no one is alone or outcast. This is beautiful. We have witnessed a historical time in the Jabulani Herd. Elephant researchers will write papers about this huge shift, how one decision to introduce Setombe to Phabeni, one tiny baby who made a choice and changed the entire herd! The decisions we make in life can effect not just ourselves, but those around us, like 1 unique South African herd of orphaned elephants! Bravo, Jabulani Herd.
@lynnell5993 AMEN to that!!😊
excellent point, how our decisions can effect those around us. i think it's easy to lose sight of this and do whatever makes us happy at the time.
One person, one elephant can make a difference!💙🙏🏻
He’s a cocky little guy who’s not afraid to run with the Giants 🥰.
😊❤
He was born a cocky lil boy, I think - and he certainly hasn't changed. 😂
Confident
All the girls love a little baby bull. He's getting a lot of attention. Good for him and all the females too.
Thank you to all the Carers and Adine. We have one awesome herd!
This is so enjoyable. Once Phabeni knows he’s going to be with his herd, he runs like the wind to find his adopted momma. So cute. Thank you Herd. You are the best. Watching every morning from Florida. 💕🇺🇸🌺💗🌴

💙🐘💯 on the 'dot' comparison 😂
Phabeni also makes me realize how HUGE African elephants are!
It's difficult to see him between those majestic creatures ♥️ and so close and obedient to his adoptive mom Setombe.

Beautiful. Phabeni is so confident. Being part of the herd and making all the elephants and humans happy.❤
Bubi is my favorite female of the herd. I am glad she has become part of this group. It always made me sad that she was alone. She was also a nice aunt to our pink sweetheart. Phabeni is well looked after.
Anche per me Bubi è la mia preferita, è sempre solitaria ,meno male che con Setombe si avvicina a Phabeni come pure è successo con Khanyisa che è stata una splendida allomother. Hi
My Favourite Too!
ALWAYS, Paula C ❤
Phabeni has such beautiful eyes! Thank you all for sharing this herd with us each day. ♥️
Love those beautiful brown eyes❤❤
I M looking at how big this herd is and every single elephant has been saved by you! I am overwhelmed by gratitude to all of you who take care of them daily! Ty Ty Ty ! 💕⭕️❤️

The HERD and these videos, have renewed my faith in humanity. ❤️🐘🙏🏻
So beautiful that Phabeni gave Setombe and also Bubi new confidence and love 🥰
The daily updates from HERD with the newest baby ellie, Phabeni, are so wonderful. It's lovely to see and hear from all of the elephant carers as they share information and observations about the herd, including how the ellies' relationships and the herd dynamic changed with Phabeni's arrival. It is a wonderful adventure every day that Adine and all the staff of HERD take us on, your worldwide audience. Thank you! ❤
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Superbeni!
What a nice relaxed mood in the herd today. Phabeni is looking so confident and comfortable with his family❤
It was destiny that Phabeni came to HERD! He is what everyone needed! ❤🐘
It definitely saved his life. I just hope his birth mom is alive & well! If she is, I can only imagine her heartbreak at her baby being lost. Maybe by a miracle, they'll meet again. 😢
That blanket really suits Phabeni. He's a rock star elephant.
It’s so cool to hear about the ellie social dynamics and how they have shifted with Phabenis presence! We ❤ HERD!
The herd looks nice and heathly .. great work care givers
Phabeni is a feisty little Ellie ❤. He loves his two footed and four footed families.
Your beautiful herd are giving the new baby their very best!
Phabeni is so happy with his new family. So thrilled to see how this has played out. One day this little baby will be a big bull and will be called on to welcome a new, scared little orphan, and he will remember his past and step up. Just like Jabu and the others have done for him. Love what you are all doing at HERD!!! Thank you❤
It appears the entire elephant life is about the babies.
They understand that the young ones are the future of the herd, which means they also understand mortality.
That is the innate objective of a breeding herd: to defend and extend the dynasty of the herd.
Not the bulls though. They don't care about the babies. It's only the matriarchs who raise them. When they die the calves won't last long unless they find another matriarch coz they won't find any solace with older bulls who live alone or in herds of other bulls.
Phabeni is pretty much attached to Setombe’s hips.
Amazing.
Isn't our Phabeni just the cutest little boy 😍💖💖💖💖💖
The babies are so necessary for renewal in the herd. These changes are a beautiful thing.
Nothing brings a Family together like a new baby!
@lkrzzie1955 What a gorgeous dog...is it yours?
Phabeni is a very lucky little boy! 💙
Love that Bubi is getting closer to the other females. Bubi , Kumbura, Pisa and FishtheMan all have a special place in my heart.. Phabeni is such a confident little guy. I wish FishtheMan would gain some more weight though..
Perfette osservazioni , hi
Good afternoon to all the elephants, carers and Adine. I love watching you everyday. ❤️💫
Phabeni is very happy and impatient to join the herd . Soooooo cute
Phabeni is the treasure that brought all the Females together. The HERD will have a special Mothers day to celebrate. 💕Thank you to Adine and the very Loving carer's for sharing all the Ladies in the HERD and the stories of each Lovely 🌹 Lady.
Little Phabeni is so very confident !!! That is what love and care can do. I love the fact everyone was excited and came to say hello. Thank you for loving these glorious creatures.
Oh he is excited and ready to join his herd! He is so adorable with that blanket on and searching for Setombe, his mom. I love to watch these videos. They never get tiring! --And little Khanyisa seems to want some "snack" for the road! lol
The little guy looks so confident and comfortable with the herd
Phabeni reminds me of a mischievous puppy. Seeing the herd surrounding him while they are on the move makes my heart so happy. Wonderful to hear the carers sharing their observations. Bless you all!
I wonder if elephants have reactions like us to the 'cuteness factor' of little ones. 😊❤
Since they've exhibited a sense of humor, perhaps they do.
Phabeni is looking smart in his tartan coat today 🏴
Was just thinking how regal he looks! Heh - now I wonder if that matches a particular clan.
🏴💙🌿🐘
@@mortalclown3812 With that active little trunk, he's practically got a built-in bagpipe!!😂
Hope Phabeni is feeling better now, and taking his bottles. He is just so cute. I love him to bits, but our pink princess Khanyisa is still a soft spot in my heart. ❤❤❤❤
He is the definition of cuteness. Thanks for all of your good care of the herd.
Boy has got his snazzy blankie on and is ready for today's adventures
After reading the last blog entry, I've been so worried about Phabeni. He looks well and I'm so happy to see it. Also, I always laugh that the easiest way to find Kumbura in the herd is to look for the baby because she'll be in that vicinity. She's such an amazing aunt and sister.
Phabene is growing so fast. I remember when his trunk was like a little pencil and mow it's so much longer and thicker. Can't believe that Khanysa was that size at one time. Look at her now: a true young lady. Thank you Adine, carers and everyone else helping to take care of these precious elephants. Watching the videos is a very pleasant part of my day.🥰🥰🥰
Setombe seems to have gained a lot of confidence from her role as allomother to Phabeni. She was always the forgotten female, and now finds herself with a solid position and influence. This has been so good for her.
I love the way he runs, playtime. Beautiful ❤
It's so heartwarming to see Phabeni run and be so excited to join his new herd. He isn't sad or lonely anymore. It seems the trauma he went through has gone away. Well done, everyone at HERD ❤
Phebeni has really come into his own now and will one day be a magnificent bull with all the character he displays. Thankyou all for the caring of all the ellies. 🐘♥️
I just saw this morning on social media a photo of two so-called "big game hunters" who had killed a 2 year old elephant. A toddler! I had to come here to clear my head and remember there are still wonderful, good people in the world. RIP to all the animals who are cruelly slaughtered by these rich a--------- every year.
Thats inhumane and should be frigging illegal! Why can't taking a photo of a living animal in its environment be enough?
Name and shame them!
@jimmyguitar2933 I’m horrified to hear that! A two year old elephant?! How can that be okay with anyone? I wish more could be done through tougher laws and the infrastructure to amp up surveillance to protect these gentle giants. All the more important to support HERD in any way possible. These regular walks, interactions, and observations being made by the carers are my therapy too!☮️❤️🌍🐘
Hell is made for those individuals who kill God’s works of art! These animals deserve much better from our species. It does my heart good to know that some are protected from this kind of inhumanity! The caretakers of this herd are truly God’s gift!
!😢
Adine and all the caretakers, yall do a phenomenal job taking care of the Herd. From small to giants, they all, feel safe being in your care.
Love and God's blessings for you. 🙏🙏
The herd is such a special group. It lifts the heart.
I am so impressed by Setombe becoming Phanbeni’s mother , she looks amazing too . Phanbeni is still practicing his charging I see . It is so good to see all the females being a herd to support Setombe and protect the little one , good practice for them all I think .❤️❤️

It's a cute blanket on baby bull calf Beni
I was laughing so hard when Adine said to Tokwe: "ben jij nog vies van mij voor niet krijgen van de baba?!" 🤣 Meaning are you still angry with me for not getting the baby Tokwe?!
Tokwe really has an attitude to Adine 😂😍
And watching Phabulous Beni run to his herd melts my heart, every time!
She seems to be sulking and thinking how unfair it is, that after her efforts of kidnapping a baby elephant from a wild herd, Setombe is the one getting a new baby.😂
With all the wars and rumors of wars, this is such a wholesome and refreshing channel to view.
The little bull Phabeni has a big heart that has enveloped this herd for the better. He's truly a blessing 💖
I love how the whole time you were talking about how Phabeni loves to swing his trunk, Fishan was swinging his tail! 😂 I love him. He's my favorite of the bulls.
I actually was confused. I thought she was talking about Fishan’s tail but accidentally calling it a trunk. Now I know 😅
Thank you for the insight into herd dynamics!
Like the red blanket, makes it easy to find Phabeni.
Phabeni is a real asset to the herd. Yes, he has real personality. I really love to see how he has progessed since his arrival at HERD

Yes, Phabeni captured my heart! Phabeni, in his red blanket, the heart of the herd❤🐘💛🧡 Love to you all❣
Wow, what changes due to the arrival of little Phabeni! You just wonder what clicked with Setombe that she decided to become his mother. And now additionally has stepped into the role of Matriarch, no more just Setombe and daughter Klaserie. Ms. Bubi dropping her loner act, getting close to Setombe and not displaying proprietorship over Phabeni like she did with Khanyisa. I’m curious to see what Tokwe will do. Will she still always make sure the herd is settled and safe before going about her own activities, will she still check on the babies when they’re with other females. Limpopo has always been mama’s backup, so with Setombe being Matriarch, how will that affect her and also Klaserie. This is just incredible.
I thought Tokwe was still the herd matriarch. (?)
Since we humans can only witness shifts in their relationships vs being privy to elephant 'negotiations', 😊 every day holds surprises.
Tokwe is still the Matriarch Dame Setombe is the Dean and now surrogate mother to Phabeni but I didn't think it has changed the role of the Matriarch or ????
Adine has always made it clear that Setombe may have suffered traumas as a young calf/cow in Zimbabwe,, before she moved South to South Africa in 2002 as a result of the rescue by Lente Roode. I wont go into detail, but research suggests that young calves could suffer PTSD as a result of being separated from their mother in horrible circumstances associated with elephant rides. This is the dark side of what went on in Zimbabwe - and other places in S Africa
It seems to me, at least, that it is entirely possible that this is why Setombe, who is now a physically big adult female, lacked confidence until the birth of Klaserie - which in itself is a tribute to Lente Roode, since Klaserie was the second calf of the Zimbabwe females born in RSA. i.e. Setombe felt more safe in RSA than in Zimbabwe. It does not explain why Tokwe, Lundi and Bubi and indeed the Zimbabwe bulls, -all younger than Setombe (except Sebakwe) - did not suffer PTSD as well, though one may guess.
It is heartrending that a small orphan could now help Setombe in her last phase of rehabilitation - to restore the mental strength and happiness she previously lacked all these years. and it would be almost the stuff of Hollywood if Setombe strolled from her nightmare and assumed the reign of Matriarch, though you can see why she could now do so.
I do wonder how Tokwe and Lundi view all this - after all, six months ago, they went in search of an orphan calf. This is an orphan herd and almost unique in its travails and challenges, Will they try again?
This is a most interesting thread! I've been just as curious with these herd dynamics shifting and so fluid.
Setombe was the biggest enigma for me since I've been following this channel 4 years ago; I've always wondered about the mental scars blocking Setombe from assuming the mantle of matriarch. I noticed how she almost usurped Lundi to take on the surrogate mother role for Phabeni - it struck me that Lundi didn't really put up much of a contest; neither did Tokwe. Setombe seemed to finally pull rank on the rest of the cows, somehow?
Adine has also mentioned how Setombe is a disciplinarian to the young bulls - but we've seen these young bulls push around and chase Lundi and Bubi (not Tokwe) - thus left me wondering whether they also bully Setombe as well or whether she's able to stand her ground like Tokwe does? That would be another clue to Setombe's state of mind, so to speak.
Also, The age gap between Tokwe and Setombe isn't large, I think it's 3 years or so. Not all that significant; I'd imagine their size difference is miniscule. We know size matters in elephant society. How does that affect the herd dynamics here?
There's so many aspects to these dynamics, I just never quite know how to pen my thoughts coherently, but it's most fascinating to observe how the power dynamics and leadership hierarchies play out among the Cows.
@@Vaal650 Dame Setombe is not afraid to sparring with the youngest Bulls especially mischevious Mambo who is sometimes looking for trouble and also Zindoga
