I enjoy your content so much because it is so down to earth and realistic. I noticed you have an Ecowitt weather station setup-- so do I. I recommend getting a soil temperature sensor to put in one of your raised beds because I use that to know when my soil temps are warm enough to plant. Anyway, it is fun to be geeky and track all the weather data. I just put in beets, turnips, and radishes because I have time to harvest those before the weather is too bad and they hold up to the fall cold nights. I need to try some of that winter lettuce. I think gardening is about experimenting and learning so I am always trying a new thing and experimenting with methods. Thanks for the fun content and I look forward to seeing how this works for you.
Weird weather is an understatement for this year. Good luck with your experiment! It'll be fun to see how it turns out. I was ready to sow seeds a couple of weeks ago, however we're still in the 90s F, and that's not good for cool loving plants. I'll have to wait and see what the middle of this month is like and take it from there. We'll have 12 hours of daylight by the Equinox and my first frost is supposed to be between the middle and end of October. It'll be a crap shoot for sure.
Is it just me, or is there something about the sound of seeds tinkling back into the packet. Love that sound 😅 Good luck with your winter garden ladies 💚🌱
👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻 Lol, I’m actually looking at taking a break after the weather this year. Late frost, extreme drought, smoke, and now weird late heat domes-We hit 103*F yesterday!😮. And still no rain. If I do grow something it will be lettuce in winter. If I grow inside the rabbits can’t get it😊. The bunnies are small enough to get through where there is no chicken wire-yet! It’s just to cold in Wisconsin, US and not enough light to bother without heating the greenhouse. They predict polar vortex for us in winter and sounds like our snow will go south.
Just back from holiday in Camber and I really do need to get started on the winter prep. I have some ornamental cabbages growing from seed on the windowsill - never tried them before. And lots of pansies and violas. But that's it. Need to get the winter greens in. Thanks for the chat/prod in the preverbial. xx
Good luck your very organised with your seeds in there containers 😊 I've started spring cabbage last week in a cold frame for now always good until they get munched in the bed in October 😢😢
Hi Eli, will definitely join you in your winter sowing experiment. I’ve got a wee veg patch this year and have been growing pak choi and perpetual spinach along with chard and sugar snap peas. Didn’t realise I could keep growing the 1st two so will get sowing some more. Good luck with yours!
This is my first year attempting to garden (zone 8b) and I have also sown some latecomers, just to see what happens. Snappeas, snapdragons, golden beets, some squashes that may at least yield some edible leaves if nothing else. We'll see! And yes, the weather has been unpredictable in the northwest U.S., as well. We've had some really late summers, so I'll take the relief of rain or the extra sun.
Hiiiii , oh yes, weather is bananas.. this week was fall.. cold, wett and I got the candles out and the fall feeling. From tomorrow its summer again with 25 to 30 Celsius .. for the next 10 days. Well, maybe my peppers will at least grow some more but winter sowing.. dont think so.
This is my favorite gardening channel because even though I’m across the world in Western Washington this is the closest I can find to my weather. I would definitely appreciate temperature translations into Fahrenheit though. No idea what -8 means 😅. No I’m going to go see what’s in my seed box that seems reasonable to plant before the baby wakes up.
I thought we were past the major heat here in NYC, but this coming week is going to be in the 90F/32C up until Friday. I tried to grow some lettuce in a regular pot that I have hitched to the safety bars on the window, but I didn't thin them enough. It was a very wet summer here too.
Over here in the US, and the weather in my neck of the woods has been odd this year, too. I can't wait to see how your winter garden grows! We're trying a winter garden experiment here, too. Then again, all of our gardens are a little experimental! I didn't realize that they sold Greenstalks over there! That's part of our winter garden design this year.
This is the first year I will be growing (or attempting to grow) plants through the winter. I did get some lettuce seeds that tolerate the cold, they grew small plants mostly because I planted them late last year. Still need to put in Pac Choi, but I'm zone 6 basically temperate ocean climate. Weather weird, oh yeah, unpredictable, up, down like a yo-yo. 🙄 We'll try, maybe succeed.
I’m pretty certain I’ll get at least one crop. I’ve done well in previous years… it’s just a case of what this winter will be like compared to other years :)
A little off topic but do either of you grow brussel sprouts? Would love if you did a video.. mine we a big fail this year! I love them and it's tradition to have with holiday meals. Haven't checked mytur nips yet.
September is where your garden and my garden overlap; I will be planting bok choi varieties, sprouting broccoli has been started (Gailan, or Chinese broccoli has been kept over the summer, not happy, but producing leaves and side shoots occasionally when garden greens are scarce in Florida, so my experiment is to see what these weird "tree broccoli" turn into as the weather cools.) I have tatsoi getting ready to start; Perpetual Spinach and Swiss chard have been producing all summer with help from shade cloths, but got 0/12 for August indoor sowing, so try, try, later. Of course, where our gardens differ is all my tomato and pepper seedlings, biding their time to get planted out. I can't wait! You have to try some Dragon's Tongue Beans for Kate's love of all things dragon, then. Or had you tried them already? You have the most picture-perfect Green Stalk on either side of the Pond!
After being away looking after our grand daughters during their long summer break, we have been so, so busy still trying to catch up with both harvesting & processing everything that we are now very behind with the sowing for winter. Mind you, we too are struggling to find some free space, the new water system worked so well that nothing died and the tomatoes & cucumbers show no signs of slowing down! Plus the weather being so bizarre that the damsons are way ahead of schedule. Hopefully we might be able to do a bit of module sowing by next week-end, this despite being retired...Cxx
Could someone PLEASE tell me the difference (if any) between 'perpetual spinach' and 'longevity spinach'? I keep looking for perpetual, but only finding longevity, and I have no idea if they're just the same with a different name or entirely different plants.
Sowed some red and green pak choi in modules last week in green house also go5 some chi mine da rapa growing as well as spinach hope they turn out well it’s my first time growing in a greenhouse Love following you and your advice
I suspect you love being a plant mama & having babies growing is a must!
Oh absolutely 👍

I agree… keep it fun and interesting 😍😍😍
And also very good information
Your conundrum makes some of us a bit envious. Winter garden? That sounds like an oxymoron to me. 😜
Ha ha ha now we were just talking about this in our patreon group. Comparing how your winter starts to how mine does

Yeah it’s crazy, our first frost is mid October too but we’re forecast for major heat this week out of the blue
Things have changed so much

I’ll be growing along with you… when my seeds arrive 😆

I’m prob more excited about this one than any other

You are entirely welcome
I love your infrastructure! Those beds with cover are just brilliant.
One of the best things we ever did… makes life so much easier
Good luck with your winter garden. Can't wait to see how it goes.
Me either
I’ve gone from not bothered to excited again
Good luck your very organised with your seeds in there containers 😊

We all battle the munch!!!!
Garden experiments are my fav hahaah!
Always love a good experiment
I’m on the Texas Gulf coast and our weather is horrible hot 🥵 I’m going to try a Fall garden in a couple of weeks.

Peas are also hardier than you think so they might go longer than you plan 😂
@@eliandkate yeah, I found a few surprise ones last week!

Ha ha ha I have no clue about Fahrenheit either so we’re in the same wave length there
I'm planting my fall seeds now also here in West Virginia. Hopefully the weather will cooperate! 😊
Fingers crossed.
Within hours of me sowing our temps dropped
We are back up in the 90's F here this week, no fall for us yet. Wanted to replant my spinach but I think it's too hot for them to sprout.
I might grow a long with you--but will probably be in the greenhouse. I have been so busy that I haven't prepared for fall plantings yet.
Yay!!!

All my winter lettuces and pak choi got eaten. Started again in the greenhouse and will try planting them out when more established
I feel your pain

Nah let’s aim to fail and that way we’ll romp it!!!! 😂😂😂😂
@eliandkate ooh yes definitely 😍😍😍
I put things in just to see if they will grow & like Kate i love dragonsxx
Hurrah
I have popped some pak choi outside this year on the new plot but as a back up I’m sowing in the greenhouse too
Good plan!!
Because I’m in the southwest US I will be sowing some winter veg probably in early October. Look forward to seeing how we compare to Scotland.
I can’t wait to see what’s happening with yours Lee 😍

Not the same plant no.
Perpetual spinach is a chard, sometimes call spinach beet or beet spinach if that helps
