Thet drum competition clip was nuts 🔩
I started as a double bass metal drummer using matched grip full time. From a boating injury I have bad bloodflow to my legs as a 30 year old, decided to take up lighter music with brushes. Traditional grip with the left is my absolute favorite for swirling the pot of soup. Don't think I'd change it up to the right! Loved the drum solo for the contest.
There are old master paintings of marching armies where the drum is on the right and traditional left hand grip is in the right had. FWIW, also the right hand traditionally had a different grip than what is used today. The fulcrum was the little finger or ring and little finger to the heel of the hand. Suspected to be used for even volume between right and left hands because of calfskin heads and unreliable roped tuning. More power from a longer lever. This sticking is still used by "true to form" reenactors. The sticks found at Fort McHenry are 18" long for the added leverage. Bombs bursting in air are loud.
I'm not into traditional grip. I feel way more comfortable with match grip. But, I do respect those who can do traditional. I tried it many times and it's really hard for me. I'll still try it for the sake of it.
Traditional grip came about because of drum and bugle Corps because of the drum angle. When trap kit came they kept it. The kits usually just had 1 mounted tom, 1 floor tom, snare, Hi Hats, 1 crash, and one ride. As kits grew they needed more secure control of the sticks for reaching everything.
I started out using traditional grip back in '66. Only played match grip when playing timpani and other percussion. I'm more comfortable, cleaner and faster with traditional, but can play using either.
I did see this at a gig in London early in the year, couldn't take my eyes off him, he sounded amazing Rob.
I play match but i love to play trad when I wanna jazz it up or play quieter .
Great demo! I'm impressed that you did that so effortlessly. However, playing spang-a-lang on the ride would be a bit challenging.😎
THOMAS LANG played exclusively trad grip for decades but switched to match - cause he said it's not a good grip for playing hard - as you will get injuries which you won't get with matched. Search his video on traditional grip for a good long explanation about it.
Fascinating. Never heard about traditional grip being done due to a slanted drum in marching bands. I only feel comfortable with matched grip...very much a beginner.
Most players playing traditional grip have their snare slated - even when playing the drum set.
Rob! That was awesome! Great skills man! It was also hilarious!
Hahahaha, finally someone with the same weirdness as me. I can play traditional with my right hand, but couldn't save my life if asked to do left. Unlike you, I do know where it comes from. Growing up my first main influences were Simon Phillips, who place open handed match grip. And Cozy Powell who plays traditional. My brain blended the two styles, so i can now play open handed traditional.... It's still fun to see people looking at me with eyes like: What the Hell?!?!?! Hahahaha
I play mostly traditional, but go back and forth depending on what the music calls for. Even during a song.
Not sure about everyone else but I get a different lope out of my playing when I use traditional grip. Both are useful imo.
I like playing the ride with right hand traditional grip for a different sound and feel
ahh damnit, i was gunna do a match traditioanl parady video, but i havent gotten to it yet. also haven't gotten to starting a channel, making any videos, or any of the practice i need to confidently play...
"Tradition grip" is actually quite modern. It's the European Marching band grip. I think even the Romans used a drum slung at waist front. The side sling came from armies carrying rifles. African drummers used either one stick, talking drum or forward hand drums. Traditional grip / positioning probably arrived early post the US Civil War and then via the 20th century wars in Europe when there was a burgeoning of theatre culture like Music Hall / Vaudeville.
But if you put your sticks in trad grip in both hands, then simply turn the hands over you will find the index & mid fingers in their perfect places for matched grip. Just put your back fingers where they naturally go and you're ready.
great video Rob. I've experimented with traditional a bit and would love to play more of it as it looks cool and is usually associated with "serious" players but the way I sit and set up, I'd have to dedicate a lot of time to making it work and I'm more interested in furthering my playing as a match grip guy.
I have also experimented with a traditional grip in my right hand. It feels more natural for me. Also, when driving, I have always used my left foot for the base drum when listening to music. I was thinking about changing my whole drum kit to a left-handed setup. But, I'm glad I didn't. I will continue to use matched grip.
All arguments aside, you just blew my mind doing that. 😲 Just...wow.
Hahaha. It’s pretty weird, man
Kickin' some drum ass!
I switch back and forth when my hands cramp up, but only when working on the pad or snare. For some reason I started with a right hand traditional grip in my 4th grade music class and have been able to go back and forth ever since.
I mostly play traditional grip but sometimes I switch to match even in the middle of the song.
Man when I first picked up drum sticks that’s how I picked it up. I still like playing with right arm trad
First drummer I've seen play drums with traditional grip, matched awesome.
Well said. Cheers, Rob! ✌️🥁🇨🇦
I was taught traditional grip by three different instructors rudimental Jazz and rock. I tried match grip for a year and just couldn't get speed and rudements down so I play tradition it's comfortable and easy to get around the set. It's not good for everyone but for me it is. That's that.
Not a fair assessment. 😁You didn't arrange your kit with matched traditional in mind. Maybe move the toms to your hips and tilted forward Daru Jones style, since it was invented to play snare on the hip. 🤔There's got to be an optimal setup, ergonomically that will look or feel less awkward. I would find out but I'm busy getting the Flamuel Jackson workouts up to speed. 😋 Great Drumming Rob!
I think you are the person that gave me the thought “traditional grip in one and matched in the other helps me think different thoughts through each hand” …. I dunno. Thanks as always.
It's a common thought. I heard it first from Jojo Mayer :)
The trad grip shortens the length of your reach, that’s why it was invented. My problem is physiological. I have really wide shoulders, for me to play trad grip, I have to severely tilt the drum for it to be remotely comfortable. It also f’s up one’s posture. Ever seen Buddy Rich walk? His left shoulder was the first thing to enter the room. I don’t hate trad grip. Some of the most amazing drummers use it religiously. But I will argue that it’s not superior in any way. And most of the ‘trad grip’ drummers I know use a bastardized version, sort of a hybrid. Matched grip for me. It makes more sense for my physical stature and prevention of injury.
YOU GO BOY!!!
Cool. What's that hi-hat?
I don't play traditional and I'm not sure I ever will, but:
I think it changes how you feel holding the stick. Your palm is up, as if you're saying: please, tell me more about that.
It's arguably "objectively inferior" from a technical standpoint (less range, fewer muscles to use, more challenging ergonomically in general etc), but it doesn't seem to hold back some of the best players on the planet.
Traditional grip also looks cool. You look like you know what you're doing when you do it.
Smoothness as butter
You could play traditional or match with your FEET and you would sound great !!! Amazing.
i thought it was cool lol, your one of the few that can pull it off. 👌still sounded like butter.
Too cool my Brother 🙏🏾😅👊🏾
It's WAY easier to play double-trad with the Scottish traditional grip than the standard traditional grip.
As someone who doesn't play traditional grip can you even play rim shots with that grip
Yes since you normally angle the snare slightly away from you.
can i sample you saying metronome
It looks so odd but it sounds so right :)
What are your thoughts on using the sticks upside down i.e. Bernard Purdie or Steve Gadd?
Bigger sound on the snare. Steve Ferrone does it too
@@RobBeatdownBrown I’ve been doing it recently and it’s wild how much of a difference it makes. Plus it makes me feel like Steve Gadd which is always a plus 😎
It was stupid, but it was pretty funny, too!
The problem that I have with traditional grip is that it’s kind of uncomfortable, especially to play a rim shot.
Takes a bit of practice to get to where you can hit em consistently
Cause it was invented for playing a drum
On your hip. Not a drum
On each hip.
Traditional grip feels ok if its just snare and high hat but moving around the kit feels awkward and not near as smooth as match grip.
Yea. It never will for me. But I still love playin traditional
Say what????
Jazz Grip nerds are hilarious since it was ONLY invented to solve a problem we no longer have.
That's a pretty ignorant comment.
@@seraeirian2 But literally entirely correct. I don't know how many times people can say " it was only invented to play marching drums on your hip and has no other application " . Thomas Lang says it has ZERO _advantage_ over matched for actual playing. None. So please do one.
@@DavidOakesMusic i think you are right but the feel change and jazz was always play with traditional grip so if you want that sound u kinda need to play traditional.
Stupid is as stupid does, my mama says....
Hahaha that looks stupid and wierd, play it again hahaha
Cause you have no reach.
Im a beginner so i have no meaningful opinion whatsoever.
