    hello moltzvt, seriously thanks for this posting. Great to see about US and German ingenuity ! This is a very helpful vid and conserves existing HURTH installations.

    I know I'm repeating others but thank you for posting this video and leaving it online years later. Many of us still have these gearboxes and your video is a great help in understanding how simple an overhaul job is - and how the transmission works.

      Thanks Fritz, when I did my repairs I could not find much information so I decided to post what I learned as I know there are thousands of these transmissions still in service. I’m happy that it helped. In

    Great video! I just got the parts for our HBW-50. Looks like I'll need to buy a press too... Thanks for sharing this!

    Thanks for the video. I have a 250hsw and it is secular for me to get a feel for a similar box.

    Thank you for the video. I replaced my Hurth HBW100 transmission with a new PRM120, which is 1 1/2" longer than the Hurth and so forced me to move the engine forward by 1" (on my Catalina 36). So I now have a Hurth core that I need to figure out what to do with.

      Did you ever get rid of that core? I might be interested in a purchase.

    Hello, I posted this video when I did my transmission because I could not find a similar video to help me. I hope you find it useful. I am not on this site on a regular basis so if you have a question I will try and answer it as best I can. Might be best to email me dmoltz9830@gmail.com. I am not an expert but a person who made a repair just like you all.

    Thank you for the great video, I'm having trouble finding an exploded view or diagram of any kind for a hurth hbw 250, I saw nothing on the Foley site you mentioned, have any suggestions you can offer? I'm trying to replace warn disc's also. Thank you

    The hurth 10 and 100 have different specs. I replaced the 10 with a ZF12m and it was perfect.

    Hello, perfect video, thank you! But, please, why do you apply the sealing between the halves of cover? In my original gearbox is nothing (it is anomalous, but true nothing). ..
    P.S. old Hurth HBW 10-2R = newer Hurth HBW 125 = new Hurth ZF 12 M (about internet repair manual (?))

    Great video, this has me wondering why the 2 bronze trust washer had so much wear ?

    • @moltzvt
      @moltzvt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A diesel engine like the Perkins 4-108 has an uneven thrust curve when at idle or low RPM. In other words, each time it fires the rotation jumps or increases slightly. I have seen problems in large diesel engines as well that are allowed to idle too much. The dampening plate mounted between the engine and transmission smooths out the thrust. When the dampening plate gets old the peaks in thrust are transferred to the transmission, the thrust washer, even when in gear, slips a fraction to dampen the torque. Every time it slips the washer begins to wear until failure.

    Do you happen to remember the thickness of the forward thrust washer? Im hoping i can get a higher quality one from McMaster Carr

      Sorry,
      I do not have the thickness, I have one on the bench but not planning to rehab it until later this winter.

    Thiis a job for East Coast Marine
    Lot more involved than just replacing parts. Last thing you want is to go thro this and have it fail one year out at an inoportune time!

    Where did you purchase the replacement parts?

  • @JohnSmith-ck4fv
    @JohnSmith-ck4fv 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seems to be 2 options for parts mfgrs--ZF (formerly Hurth) and Alto, less expensive, a US company that makes clutch parts. Any opinion as to the quality of either product?

      it hurts to not to replace HURTH w ZF or refurbish it 🙂

    Hi thanks for the video! Do you have to take your boat out of the water to take it out? Just to know if I can do the same coz I have the same problem. Kr Antoine

    • @lisamoulton8004
      @lisamoulton8004 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, this work can be done in the water as long as you can slide the prop shaft aft enough for uncoupling

    Great video. please could I make a question?. I replaced the inboard diesel engine of my sailboat for one That has a ZF gearbox 2x1, an old model from late 80´s, but a kept the same propeller wich is left handed and now when I move the control forward the boat goes backwards so if I want to go forward I have to move the control to reverse, and somebody told me that I should change the propeller because that gearbox was made for rigth handed propeller and I could not use like this because the gears of the reverse are weaker than the ones that goes forward. So what I see in your video is that they are exactly the same and I should only change the position of the cable on the control system. Does the zf gearbox for inboard engines works like this one? Am I right or I should replace the propeller? I will be greatful to hear an answer from you.

      Jose, I am not an expert but I do recall looking into the cooler that can be bolted on the side of the transmission. I was told you only need the cooler if the transmission is run in the reverse mode all the time as you say. there is an idle gear on that side that allows reverse and this would add heat. For shore duration runs I think you would be OK. Might be easier to change the prop as you mention. Do be sure to change the dampening plate, i do believe this causes transmission issues when it fails. Hope this helps.

      the reverse gear on the ZF gear box is much different and is operated by a chain

    HWB 10 Is not the same as the HWB 100, Hurth Vs ZF branding as far as I can tell. HWB 100 is the ZF10M though
