      There's still classic Mac Pro content for me to put out but I don't have a 5,1 in my possession anymore, just my 3,1 I bought nearly 14 years ago. If by chance I come across a killer deal on a Mac Pro 5,1, I'll probably do a video on that.

      Thank you for the kind words. Little to most people's knowledge I've been updating the Definitive Mac Pro Upgrade since December from my M1. I'm still very interested in the developments and will continue to update the Definitive Mac Pro Upgrade guide. More than likely, I'll fold all of the guides I've written and plan to write into a proper website.

    • @dmug
      @dmug  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it took selling off a lot of stuff to get my 7,1. I could technically afford a Mac Pro 2019 but it’d been totally irresponsible. At least the 2013 is still in a much better position as it’s still supported.

    Thanks for the video. For Big Sur - seems like they fixed the problem, i'm daily driving 11.5.2 on my 2012 MacPro on NVMe drive with no problem at all, no kernel panic, no drive corruption. Also MS said that Win11 will be available for installation on non-TPM machines but they reserve rights to not make any updates for such installations.

      I just saw the later on Ars Technica I think yesterday but I haven't heard any reports 11.5.2 fixed the boot crashing from the OpenCore. I put it to the community to see if that's true.

    I know this is an older video at this point... but I was still wondering (as a novice dr Frankenstein Mac Pro user) all this is reasonably acceptable... but what about a transition to Linux on these old machines? couldn't an open source os like that continue to push these capable machines farther?

      I mean, my 3.06 Ghz 6 core 32 GB ram RTX 480 card with SSD and HDD stuff works great for my graphic design and voice over work, and will for years to come. I'm running Monterey beautifully, all the OS issues were resolved. Its a solid machine. Things have changed since this video was released.

  • @brokenelectronics3665
    @brokenelectronics3665 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Okay, I fully realize that this video was published over two months ago. Still, I have to reply. As one who lived through the PowerPC to Intel conversion, yes, eventually, the classic Mac Pro is going to go the way of the Power Mac G5. Still, the Power Macs received security updates through late 2011, and were relevant powerful machines for a good three years after that. With the addition of Latebloom, booting Big Sur on a cMP is not nearly the problem it seemed at first. 90% of the time, a cold boot on mine is working cleanly. I am certainly hoping that we will be able to continue using our machines up to the end of Intel support. Since this is a different situation than the last transition, I am hopeful that we can bank on at least ten more years of security updates.

    • @dmug
      @dmug  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      LateBloom came out like two days after I recorded this, and yeah, I lived through the PPC -> Intel and even the 68k -> PPC. If there's anything that says I'm banking on Intel support for a lot longer than the PPC transition, its me buying a 2019 Mac Pro. I actually have a follow up video planned as I get to eat my own words a bit, but only a little.

    • @brokenelectronics3665
      @brokenelectronics3665 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fair enough. We all knew that when the Apple Silicon transition was announced, that the cMPs days were numbered. I am just banking on the number being larger rather than smaller. I recently acquired a 4,1 that had not been flashed to 5,1 firmware. Jay from Ouse of Moth has a blog post on it. Actually. I think I learned about that from you. Jay wondered if there were v dry many people who still needed to do that flash. Well, three years ago, I had to track down a firmware update, and flash it onto a 450 MHz Sawtooth, in order to use Leopard Assist to install Leopard. There are going to be people doing these upgrades for a long time. There may not be many, but I am very sure that they will appreciate your work.

  • @RCTUN748
    @RCTUN748 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What I find interesting is that this computer has been upgraded so far, and of course the speed is not as fast as the latest M series Apple, but to be honest, it is still quite enough, if there is a good enough graphics card, a good enough M.2 SSD and an upgrade to a top CPU, it can still do adobe work and program development work.
    Considering that Apple is going to release a new OS in a few months, I upgraded my system to Monterey today to avoid the risk of obsolescence of many apps I am currently using, and I was surprised to find that Chrome has become faster again.
    I'd like to say that, of course, there will be a day when cMP is "not up to the task", but in terms of hardware specifications, I think it's too early to tell.

      Most likely we'll see another Mac Pro Intel revision as it'll take Apple quite some time for Apple Silicon to really be able to offer a compelling alternative to the Mac Pro 2019. There's many years left in the tank for the Intel Macs partly due to the install base and partly due to the reality that Apple has much much much further to go in the world of GPUs.

    I am also still rocking a 5,1 from 2010. It’s sad to see that it’s more and more struggling but that’s life I guess. I am thinking about upgrading the CPU’s to dual 5680s and switch my GTX 1080 with a 5700xt to be able to do the last updates. Do you think it’s worth the money or should I just wait for it’s EOL and wait for the Apple Silicon Mac Pro?

    • @dmug
      @dmug  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can’t say based on not knowing what you’re looking to do. I just can’t recommend anyone paying above MSRP for a used last generation gpu. They’re still going for $700-$750 for a card that launched at $399 but dropped in retail to about $349 street.
      It’s likely to be a bit of a long wait and a lot of unknowns for the apple silicon Mac Pro, I’d say it’s naive to see the Apple Silicon Mac Pro being terribly cheaper than the current 2019, especially considering the front loading of cost as it seems like we very much could see a mostly non upgradable box.
      Either way it’s a waiting game for gpu prices or new Apple Silicon. My guess is whatever the next MacBook Pro is and perhaps a full sized iMac will be enticing enough for many Mac Pro users to ditch the box.

    I just dragged my Mac Pro 4,1 --> 5,1 to Monterey using OCLP. Things are working well, but there were definitely some hiccups. It is hard for me to get my brain around a little Mac Mini with the M1 and 16GB RAM blowing the doors off my dual Xeon 24 core, 64GB RAM Mac Pro. I'll run the Mac Pro through the EOL of Monterey and probably jump into a M2/M3 based system at that point. Who knows though? The wizards working Open Core will probably perfect Ventura and maybe I'll keep on a while longer with the 5,1!

    It had to happen eventully. I was thinking to get one myself for a home NAS but for how long will developers be able to patch further OS installation? It's like installing further versions of Android to an obsolete phone, eventually it will become unstable AF. Nonetheless the old Mac Pro remains the last budget upgradable Mac so I won't be surprised if they managed to keep patching MacOS indefenetly. As for me I think I'll try with newer Mac minis.

    • @dmug
      @dmug  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the cMP at worst you’ll have about 5 years of Windows 10 support if Big Sur is a limit.
      If just for NAS only, I’d just get a NAS. About to the same price for something that provides often more drive bays with 10 GbE and consumes a lot less power.

As a non-video, solely-music power user on my 2009 5,1 classic MacPro, I'm hoping to get longer use by staying in a sandbox with High Sierra. Audio is such a pain. I’m actually looking at buying a 2015 MacBook Air as my Numark NS7 isnt supported and Parallels doesn’t “see” them when running VM.
      Cubase stopped supporting 32 bit plugins long before Apple dropped support so I already went though that pain and I had bought Komplete after that. My thinking with my 7,1 is entirely that it will be my audio machine for many years to come and I may end up in a few years with a main computer that is Apple Silicon and my 7,1 is basically dedicated to audio. Sorta like those guys who still use macOS 9 for audio.

    Well the 2008 mac pro was a solution for me. I am not a graphic designer or video editor, just a person wanting a computer that can store and back up all my data and serve as an entertainment and basic computer. I paid only $150 AUS for my machine and I love how I can change my multiple hard drives playing music, videos and games. It powers my 4k monitor and my beats speaker box and headphones work perfectly with my machine. I also have a modern 27 inch imac and 15 inch macbook pro but I feel this machine works as well as them for the faction of the cost. Apple silicon is very powerful, so is a ferrari but I drive in a location where the speed limit is 60km. As amazing as the iphone and ipads are, how many of them last 10 years or more?

    So last week, I upgraded my 2012’s GPU to an Nvidia Quadro K5000 4gb, and it seems to be running everything I need. I use Waves plugins, and version 12 displays a grey image on plugin windows. When I found out it’s because OpenGL’s no longer supported, I did research and found this card for pretty cheap. The main takeaway is I’m having fewer CPU issues (so far) during playback, and 24 cores can be used more efficiently (reiterating). Main question is whether it’s worth upgrading to Mojave from High Sierra which HS seems to be fine…so I won’t bother. However! If you guys think there may be a benefit, let me know.

    I like the podcast format... generally listen to podcasts as much as possible as I don't enjoy yt vidz at all.
    I have a Mac Pro 1,1 with hrutkay's mods and really enjoy using it. A lot of software is exhibiting problems in the software market from OS to shipping software, as licenses are really limiting the usefulness of much of the software I buy.
    As a result, I've stopped buying software + computer hardware + am getting by with 2010-2012 hardware, which is weird. But ok. Coz computers got fast enough that 2010 era hardware is quite comfy. Normally I would be shelling out $2000-$3000 every four years for new computers, but am just not happy with the products. So have not upgraded in a decade. And I find a lot of folks are just like me.
    Anyway cheers- I hope someday, Apple will make hardware+software that I want again. But I'm not counting on it. Neither are my kids.

    Great, and for me, a timely video. I over the past few weeks I have been doing my research on replacing my maxed-out 2012 cMP with an M1 MacMini, and external storage. As a point of reference, I have 4x 12tb drives in 2x RAID1 setups, an OWC 4M2 with 4x 2tb NVME's, a 2tb NVME boot drive, and 1x 4tb HDD as a TimeMachine drive, all inside my cMP. I was holding out for 7,1 18-core MacPro, but I came to the conclusion that an M1 MacMini setup would be more "future proof" for me. My solution is; 1x M1 MacMini maxed out, an OWC MacMini stack for the 4tb, a Helios 3S for the 4M2, and a Thunderbay-4 for the 4x 12tb drives. The end result is I get all of the drive support of my 2012 cMP, and the ability to replace the M1 MacMini with what every comes next.

    • @dmug

      That's a tough decision, I ended up with the 2019 but the M1 (and especially what comes next) should be though better equipped to manage the storage. I jammed in 5 SSDs into my 2019 and I have my M1 Air which _may_ sell when the MacBook Pro 14" in comes out. I just happened to have enough old tech to sell to get my Mac Pro 2019, otherwise I'd probably have gone the same route as you.

To me, moving both of my system needs up to one standard processor, AND one connection type - USB-C/Thunderbolt3 - is beginning to be like ripping off a bandaid.

      @@JDFloyd Yep, I bought a USBc card awhile back for my 5,1. I'll be haunted by USB-A for years as a lot of my audio gear is USB-A. I picked up a 4x drive USBc Teramaster case for I think $150. It doesn't have hardware RAID but I also didn't care, other than that, USBc has plenty of bandwidth for 4x SATA HDDs as the hard cap realworld is roughly 1200 MB/s for USB 3.2 Gen 2. That's a less costly option than the Thunderbay. That's my current solution for 3.5 inch drives and hoping outside of Time Machine, and a media drive, I'll be buying SSDs as I fortunately I don't require 48 TB of storage (for now).

      Wow JD. you exhausted that 2012 MP to it’s max!!!! Those PCI adapters are pricey and adds up. But good thing you can move those things over to the M1 Mac mini somehow. I’m waiting for October to see if M1 Mac mini gets a new update. Gen 2 or V2

    I love my mac pro 2009, I'm with Big Sur OC 0.7.7 and Windows 10 thanks to the blessed hackers :B but I've noticed that AVX support for future generations games is critical for me, AoE4 and the PCIe 2.0 forced me to make a Windows PC with double boot Big Sur.

    Never seen any of your vids, I opened this bc of the title. My cMP is running the latest Big Sur with zero issues. People I know, three of them are selling the new M1 minis bc they suck. As for that new ridiculously price tower? Who knows, too early to tell if it will last. Seems like this is an advertisement for Apple to sell their stuff.

    • @dmug
      @dmug  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Video isn't my main mode, most people know me for the blog stuff I do.
      The M1s might "suck" for whatever task those three people are doing, but as a web developer, the M1's time-to-paint renders on webpages are the fastest thing I've ever seen, and they absolutely fly when it comes to Node js tasks since its so single core dependent. I ended up editing videos on my M1 over my cMP with a Radeon VII + 96 GB of ram since FCPX ran smoother. That said, even in this video I recommend waiting for whatever is next with the M1 as it's a consumer targeted computer. We still haven't seen what the Apple Silicon looks like when we have mid-tier or professional targeted machines.
      As far as the 2019? I mostly agree, It most certainly is an aspirational device, used to maintain it's image of a "professional" grade computer maker. It might be over priced but it is certainly the nicest computer I've ever owned by a considerable amount.

      @@dmug For that price? I would probably build a PC that will run circles around the new Mac pro, for less than half the cost. And, w/o all the dumb restrictions macs always have had. Btw, I'm a Mac user since the G4 machines, not a cult follower tho. I built PCs in the past. Never intended my comment as an insult, just a simple observation. cMP is still and will be still a very capable machine. Only a matter of time, before an enthusiast figure out how to install the upcoming Windows 11, which I already tested with my pc and it looks mad good. Cheers mate.

      @@wolfheimer1242 Didn't take it as one and I don't expect everyone to agree.
      It all depends what you're after, I'm by trade a UX developer, and Windows isn't an option if you're working with iOS and most web development tool chains rely on CLI tools which means running Ubuntu in emulation layer within Windows, it's clunky and cumbersome and not all the tools are as mature or work as well. I don't play many games so the fastest Windows PC doesn't mean much to me. It's all about intent/use case. Windows certainly has a leg up in various professional spaces, like 3D modeling/animation, visual compositing, or corporate IT endpoints. Is the 2019 Mac Pro the best deal? Nah but does is it worth it? All depends on what you're doing.

      The 2019 Mac Pro was supposed to be a game changer. Instead it ends up being a way expensive “filler” for future buyers. Once people catch on that M1 is their future. And besides, the newer Mac pros has been priced out for most people. Who can shell out 20k for a computer? That’s just ridiculous. 5 years from now, a used Mac Pro will still cost 14k. Who wants to drop 14k on that? They really messed up on the 2019 mac pros.

I agree that eventually the cMP will unable to stay current with Apple's current OS but I don't see this happening for at least a few years more. Apple is going away from modular based Macs like the MacPro as it seems not to be in their current business model of making massive profits.

    ...but what's the point of buying a $7,000 2019 Mac Pro if Apple is phasing out the Intel Chip & the support which goes along with it? Wouldn't a person be better off hanging on to the 5,1 computer until a new Mac Pro M1 comes out in 2022 or 2023? Why even bother with a 2019 model if it's gonna become obsolete soon?

    • @dmug
      @dmug  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Apple likely will support Intel for at least several years after the last Intel Mac ships since there's so many Intel Macs, it'll be years before it's obsolete. For audio, Apple Silicon is still a little wonky trying to run x86 plugins and will take longer to catch up and I didn't want to rebuy a bunch of software.
      Then there's the whole, "I don't have to deal with OpenCore". The great irony of the guy who wrote the book on the Mac Pros, I really don't enjoy working on my computers. I just want to turn it on and go to work. My guide started out as a way for me to keep straight all my upgrade options. When I saw an opportunity to sell my two Mac Pro 5,1s and the GPUs on eBay along with some other items that I no longer used, I did it. I (mostly) covered the cost of buying a 2019 Mac Pro. I'd much rather have one 7,1 han two 5,1s.

    Look at Mac Pro 5,1 it like an old Ford Mustang. You can upgrade it with new brakes, shock absorbers, engine and get it really good. A computer is just not a consumer thing, it is a marriage. You love your Mustang, but you know that a Tesla is both more economical and technically better. What does the tesla cost compared to what you put on the mustang. I know the Mustang does not have some options, but hey.

      I know it’s an analogy but unlike the car, there’s eventually a support cliff when you can’t run the latest software. It’d be like if a car couldn’t drive on new roads made after a certain point and some roads after they’re repaved. No matter how great the classic Mac Pros are/were, there’s a day when they’ll be unable to run the latest popular software.

    Recommending to use a 7,1 mac pro is a really silly thing. Intel is end of life. Even at the base cost its a terrible investment.

      Oh jeez. I guess you didn't really listen to the video cuz I recommend the Apple Silicon, but waiting.
      Plus, there's the whole, "I may actually know my needs" situation. I paid under $500 out of pocket unloading old tech to get my 7,1 and I have a lot of money tied up in audio software that's x86 that may or may not make the x86 transition. As awesome as my MacBook Air M1 has been, it isn't so hot for audio.
      Lastly, hasn't been any real progress on the OpenCore front on the PCIe race condition. It's of not "if" still, but rather "when" even in Monterey. I'm much happier with my Mac Pro 7,1 than futzing around with. So yeah, it is my money and it works for me.

    MAC's are overpriced compared to PC's and they're not worth the money! You can get the same performance from a PC for a lot less money. The reason MAC's are so expensive is because it's an Apple product not what you get!

    Right there with ya, and yes, my current strategy. I am a classic cheesgrater Mac Pro user, and there will without a doubt come a day when there are no reasonable upgrades left, or more likely, some critical software update will render the stout box obsolete. I have seen Pro and Prosumer users argue about the merits and limitations of the M1 machines as replacements. For many mid tier and upper tier pro users - THEY ARE NOT, despite their impressive performance. While they may spank their Intel counterparts and predecessors, these are still consumer tier, entry level devices. There is absolutely heavier iron in the pipeline. My inclination? WAIT.
    While the New Mac Pro blows way past my budget, I am interested in what Apple plans for the product position once occupied by the now discontinued, never upgraded, iMac Pro. (We hardly knew ye.) But a workstation class iMac powered by an M1X or M2 would grab a lot of interest from Pro Users who don’t have the top tier user cases (or budget) for the eye-wateringly costly Mac Pro. And we’ve no confidence at all that the Apple Silicon Mac Pro 8,1 will be any more affordable than the current Intel version.
    At Sixty Two years old and a battle scarred veteran of the Desktop Publishing wars, and approaching retirement. My next Mac my very well be my last Mac, and it behooves me to be patient and choose wisely so long as this box is viable. Tick. Tick.

    • @dmug
      @dmug  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely agree that it’s naive to assume the Mac Pro be any less costly when it becomes Apple silicon (the 8,1 is likely to be Intel). It seems very likely it won’t feature much (if any) user serviceability, thus front loading all the costs.
      With the idea of a $6000+ unupgradable invest, I imagine a good deal of professionals will end up iMac users or MacBook Pro users, seeing as in 2-3 years they can upgrade again. This is of course assuming we see a larger and much beefier chipset assuming Apple doesn’t go off the deep end like it did with iMac 24 inch and make the slimmest desktop at the cost of sanity. My guess though is it’ll be whatever the MacBook Pro is will be in the larger iMac, and the iMac 24/mini/MacBook Air end up in lockstep.
      The Mac Pro in the apple silicon world is a mystery.
