My suggestion to anyone starting out is to go for some of the older acclaimed books. You know you are getting something good. Once you figure out what you like you can branch out to some new stuff. Horror in general is like a box of chocolates you found in a sketchy location.. you never quite know what you are going to get... and some of them are full of bugs. A lot of it is experimental, and very dependent on the reader's personal tastes, fears, etc to determine it's effectiveness. Part of the fun of being a reader in the genre is digging through all of it to find what tastes good to you. I'd say for every three new horror books I read one is a total failure, one is just ok, and one is great. I would also suggest checking out some short story collections or novellas. Be wary of the real classics (Frankenstein, Lovecraft, etc) unless you are comfortable with that writing style and vocabulary. I started out on a steady diet of old Koontz (far superior to "new" Koontz) and King, along with John Saul, James Herbert, Brian Lumley, and Robert McCammon. There are also a lot of "horror adjacent" writers (Koontz kind of fits here too) like Michael Crichton and Robin Cook.
Great video! I will definitely still read Beast Of Burden, love your other recommendations. Short Stories, in my opinion, are a great way to introduce a new reader to horror. I loved The Haar, need to read more Sodergren. Maggie's Grave is high priority! Extreme horror has been hit or miss for me, if the story and world-building is good, then I will enjoy it. The Worm and His Kings sounds awesome.📚📚📚
Thank you, Cliff! I can definitely see how short stories could be great introductions into horror. Sodergren is awesome. And I agree about extreme/splatterpunk. If the characters, setting, and overall storytelling is good, I’m all in. I’m like that with everything I read though, in retrospect.
I wish this video existed five years ago when horror was my least favorite genre. Great recommendations! And I would also add Wounds by Nathan Ballingrud to the list. It made me fall in love with horror when I just started reading it.
I need to re-watch this and write these down! 😆 I keep umming about Fisherman but I keep hearing it recommended. Will definitely give it a shot though :)
I have a lot of respect for it. As with everything I read, I like it if it’s got well-written characters, setting, and prose. I’m not too big on the disturbing stuff anymore. Maybe I’m getting too old or something. I like extreme/splatter when it remains fun. I love gory and nasty things, but when the tone becomes too serious I might bail. 😆 I used like that kind of stuff as well but it’s changed in me for some reason.

Jason hon, what do you think of extreme horror ie splatterpunk?
