Knuckles, an American television miniseries, was brought to life by creators John Whittington and Toby Ascher exclusively for the streaming service Paramount+. Drawing inspiration from the beloved Sonic the Hedgehog video game series published by Sega, this miniseries serves as a spin-off from the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise. It marks the first-ever live-action Sonic television series.
Set in the timeline between the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), the show follows the adventures of Knuckles the Echidna. His mission? To train Deputy Sheriff Wade Whipple in the ancient ways of the Echidna warrior. John Whittington led the writing team, while Toby Ascher took on the role of showrunner.
Idris Elba reprised his voice role as Knuckles, seamlessly transitioning from the film series. He shares the screen with Adam Pally, who returns as Wade. The series was officially announced during a ViacomCBS investor event in February 2022, with Elba fully committed to the project. Filming commenced in London, England, in April 2023, with Jeff Fowler, director of the Sonic films, helming the pilot episode. The subsequent episodes were directed by Ged Wright, Brandon Trost, Jorma Taccone, and Carol Banker. The musical score was composed by Tom Howe.
Knuckles made its debut on Paramount+ on April 26, 2024, featuring a total of six episodes. Critics responded positively to the series.
