As a lifelong martial artist, I just want to clear up a few things. First, the term "striking" generally refers to any type of strike, including punches, kicks, elbows, knees, or even other strikes such as headbutts, depending on the ruleset or situation. The term "striker" typically means someone who is skilled in standup striking arts such as boxing, muay thai, taekwondo, etc. Muay thai is a sport that includes punches, kicks, elbows, knees and throws. When you guys were debating how he would do in a "striking" match against Conor McGregor or Sean O'Malley, it seemed like some of you meant a boxing match while others meant kickboxing or muay thai. In a kickboxing or muay thai fight, neither O'Malley nor McGregor would stand a chance. A boxing match with either one of them would be competitive because boxing is Conor and Sean's primary striking style, and they are two of the top boxers in mma. Your average fighter in the UFC wouldn't stand a chance in a boxing or kickboxing fight against Buakaw. Similarly, Buakaw would not do well in mma. Perhaps when he was younger, if he'd taken a few years to focus on grappling, he could have done it. But if they just scheduled an mma fight 2 months from now between Buakaw and any decent mma fighter with a solid grappling base, it would be very unlikely that Buakaw would win.

As someone who has competed in muay Thai I'd like to clear up there is no throwing . There is the clinch where sometimes someone can be accidentally thrown to the grounds from trying to move them in the clinch. But they receive no points for throwing anybody to the ground .

Buakaw is a Muay Thai legend and a beast. He would beat Connor down if it were strikes only. He's 41 now and still fighting. And Muay Thai is known as the Art and Science of 8 limbs. You can use hands, elbows, knees and legs to strike. You should check out his K1 fights from the mid 2000s. That's when I first got into the martial art of Muay Thai (2006) and have been practicing since, and I'm 41 now. Best way to get in shape!!!

Don't doubt Buakaw's competition. After reaching the top in the most prestigious Muay Thai stadiums, he wanted to show the world how effective Muay Thai is. So he then entered K1, which was the highest level of professional kickboxing in the world at the time. The guy it showed getting punished for an extended amount of time is Masato, and at the time was Japan's top kickboxer and if I'm remembering right was the K1 Max defending champion. K1 literally changed the clinch rules because Buakaw dominated everyone so bad with it. It wasn't only Masato, a lot of those guys it showed him punishing were ex champions or went on to win championships. I would highly recommend watching the K1 heavyweights highlights. Badr Hari, Andy Hug, Semmy Schilt, or Gohkan Saki to name a few.

They should understand how far any UFC fighter is from those Thai champs when it is about striking without any ground allowed. Even guys, like Israel Adesanya, who have a high level in striking and were champ before in striking can't be compared to Buakaw or any famous Muay Thai champs.

Great reaction guys, but full respect where it's due. Had Buakaw not have been robbed blind, he's the only man that would have won the K1 world championship 3 times in a row. As it is, he won two in a row and most of these knockouts/knockdowns in this video were his climb to the top. Also remembering that the K1 championship is fought over one night. The fighters barely have time to recover if they can at all before going into the next fight. The knee strike rule was changed in K1 because of the damage he caused with it. He's an absolute deserved legend and champion of his game

His last name listed on this highlight is his real last name but when fighting he took the last name of his gym as most thai fighters do. For a long time his last name was Por Pramuk (from the Por pramuk gym). Anyway, he wouldn’t do good in MMA for one, because he’s old now at 41 years old. But he also dedicated his life to kickboxing and while he is an expert in trips and foot sweeps, is way behind in wresting and jiu jitsu. Connor, Sean O’Malley and everyone else in the ufc wouod be handled in a kickboxing match against him. Just like he’d be handled in the ufc. They are differnt sports.

It is almost impossible to go undefeated for even 50 fights in Muay Thai because all 8 limbs can knock you out or at least do serious damage. I think kickboxing is similarly difficult to go undefeated especially when they allowed sweeps, clinches and elbows. The notoriously easy to buy off/intimidate judges also ripped off Buakaw in a handful of fights he won but gave the decision or a draw to his opponent. The Asian Triad gangs are notorious for getting the judges to give them the decisions that will make them the most money in the betting game. Buakaw was knocked out cold in one fight but that is pretty good to only have one with all of the fights he's had and the many weapons these fighters can hit you with. You are right you'd not want to engage him in a street fight especially if he was wearing steel toed shoes. He'd break several ribs with one kick and could kill anyone with a single kick to your dome.
Buakaw was thinking of joining the UFC and was training on the ground game but if I remember correctly he was already in his mid to late 30's so probably realised his style of fighting would leave him open to take downs and its hard to change your style of fighting at that age and get your ground game up to the highest standards.
I was a pretty good boxer in my younger days with natural blinding speed that I worked on almost every day with great determination to get even faster. I didn't have Mike Tyson one punch knockout power but I often could drop an opponent with a 3 punch combination. But even tho I thought I was a very tough and smart fighter, I thank God that I never had to face a Muay Thai legend like Buakaw in a street fight. Way too many weapons to defend against. hehe 😵

Each day started with 2 sessions lasting 2 hours which was nothing for Thais, but for Farong like me, it was brutal. First session was at 4:00am to 6:00am. The second one was at 10:00am to noon. I saw Bukaw (pronounced Boo-Cow) in Lumpini Stadium. Bukaw was the most amazing Fighter I had ever seen. That includes UFS Fighters. Bukaw was a really nice guy out of the Ring. In fact, as savage as Thai Fighters were in the Ring, most were just as nice out of the Ring..
We go back about every other year. I LOVE the culture, but still don't understand it completely. They are ALWAYS engaging and friendly. I was 49yrs old when I trained there, and the Thais made it a lifelong memorable experience I will never forget.
The UFC Fighters go to Thailand to learn from the Thais to learn Muay Thaii Boxing. The Dance the Thais perform before the Fight is call a Waikru (misspelled). It's a tribute to their Trainer and Culture.

Baukaw is legendary in the light weight. At the same time you have Badr Hari in the heavyweight in the K1 times. Look op Badr Hari highlights. And be amazed.

Muay Thai fighters from Thailand start fighting professionally as kids which partly explains the ridiculous number of fights. But his record does not stand alone. The likes of Saenchai, Rodtang, Superlek, Tawanchai and Nong-O all have several hundred fights and Rodtang in particular is wild as he has over 300 fights at just 26

Buakaw is the very definition of aggressive Muay Thai fighter with good IQ and body of steel,
you might interest in another two masters of the same era as Buakaw.
Saenchai who is known for bring technical master, a trickster that play with opponent.
Lerdsila the one who will keep dodging every punch and kick throw at him.

You guys would love Rodtang. Smaller weight class, but the guy is a straight up savage. He's insane.
Also Muay Thai is the part of Martial Arts that the UFC isn't capitalizing on. Imagine MMA with not much grappling. I like grappling, but PURE striking at this level? Brutal af.

lot of Thai fighters start competing at age 7-8 and end up fighting multiple times a night as they get older, that's why some of them have 200-300 fights by their mid twenties
