- This short piece is called Just For Two and was composed and performed by the late Dudley Savage on the Compton cinema pipe organ at St. John Veanny Church Clay Hall Essex. I found this recording on a 25 year old cassette tape which is why the quality is not fantastic. The church has quite a reverb!
I love the Clayhall organ. I've played is a few times over the years. It's amazing the variety of sound you can get out of a 7 rank (+ Melotone) organ. The acoustic is perhaps the best stop on the organ.
Hi Fraser, nice of you to pay my humble channel a visit 😚. Clayhall is 34.6 miles away from me by car according to Google. When I first heard that Compton, I imagined it was a huge instrument in a town hall somewhere, it's quite a little gem.
One of the most terrific 'small' Comptons still playing. Dudley knew exactly how to handle it. I recall the event where this recording was made; there were some American visitors present. Blew their socks off!
What a fantastic recording of a tremendous piece! Thank you so much for sharing it. This has gone straight to my Favourites file so that I can listen whenever I need cheering up!
Beautifully played and what a superb sound. Thank you for sharing it.

Superb organ solo. Love the registration and echo effect with legato melody.
Brilliantly joyous piece played superbly. Thanks for uploading. Sounds great even on £4.99 earphones.
KennnnnnyTucky Sounds pretty good on my £10 Sony MDR-V150 from Tescos :-)
Bloody brilliant little 7 rank job that is!
Still sounds great to me, although I am only using JBL desktop speakers......That cassette had to be of better quality to reproduce the sound of live pipes so well.
Thank you so much for sharing!
Dave Illar Yes, its OK, better on good headphones or speakers with some base :-)
excellent!
Superb showoff piece of this great organ ... Thanks !
Hi you mention the score for this piece. I have Dudley's music library and have his original draft (hand written copy) which you are welcome to have a copy. However over time he did alter certain bits and some of it was sometimes 'on the spot' Ill help you if I can!
Bill Moore Wow thank you! Yes Please!!! I have heard him playing this piece in a few different places and yes it varies, I think this upload is my favourite performance though. How do I obtain a copy (copies) of what you have? I think this piece might sound quite good on Salisbury Cathedral organ...
goodchappy If you email me wapmoore@tiscali.co.uk send me your address details ill look it out for you.
+Bill Moore Hello Bill I would be interested to have copies of JUST for TWO Let me know expenses occured. Fred Green 01553 775940
OK Fred. I am quite busy with family affairs at the moment but hopefully I will get a chance and dig out what I have, or I could pass you to the person who gave me in information in the first place who was very helpful.
This sounds more like a cinema/theatre organ than a church organ - I know Comptons made both... The reverb sounds like a church, but I've never heard such a fast tremulant (almost like a Hammond organ!) in a liturgical instrument. Love the piece and his performance of it, though! :)
Hi Jack. Yes it definitely is a cinema organ but as my information at the top states it lives in a church, I assume otherwise it might have been scrapped. I don't know if they have an easy way to adjust the tone and tremulant for liturgical use, I know tremulant speed is quite easy to control. I am quite amazed how this organ gives the impression of being much larger than it is with only 7 ranks of pipes. If you are interested there is more information here cinema-organs.org.uk/information/venues/st-john-vianney-church/
Yes sure I would be interested in a variation. I sometimes play one of my own, I've just not got around to writing it down yet.
That's because it is a Compton Cinema Organ given a new home in this R.C. Church. 'Simples'!!!
Do you know if the sheet music is still available? (Fred Green)
+fred green I believe this was never published as sheet music, there are various hand written sketches with suggested chords of which I have. The few recordings I have heard of this played by Dudley Savage, are all slightly different anyway though I think this recording is the best. :-)
